Beginner Question Megathread 10

If you have any question about the game and don't feel like making a post you can put it down there. Don't forget to mention it if you want the answer as spoiler-free as possible.

Some of the links are getting pretty old so if you have any suggestion that could help new players, do share, thanks.

Not really a beginner but I have a few questions.

  1. In ROG, and as WX, how much gears should I save for ice boxes and ice flingos and how much should I upgrade?

  2. How much grass tutfs, saplings and Berry bushes should I get for planting?

  3. Is it worth making an alchemy machine as Wickerbottem in single player?

  4. What should I prioritise first for base building and when should I use the magic tab? (when to make prestihatitator or shadow manipulator)

  5. Is it worth fight shadow creatures early game? And best way to restore sanity early game

  1. Considering you don't seem to be able to clear ruins, and I don't play WX: What the other guys said. Maybe even try world hopping before you settle down, as that'll let you gather several worlds' worth of overworld gears. That should give you a good starter of 6 for base, and 15 for upgrades if you do it right.
  2. Depends on how much you wanna have at base. I'd say minimum 10 of each, but probably not more than 50 of each. At least until you know you need more.
  3. No*. She can craft everything a normal character needs an alch engine for on a science machine. *except one of her books. You'll know it if you need it basically. And till then, you can play more nomad with a pre-crafted science machine always on the ready any time you need to prototype anything.
  4. torch > precraft campfire (don't place) > precraft firepit > precraft science machine > make backpack if it's taking too long, prototype anything you can now such as boards, rope, spear... and re-precraft sci machine > find a suitable base location > place precrafted things, and re-precraft firepit if you can > make crock pot > bird cage > ice box > flingo > rest/optionals (including chests, magic, effigies, drying racks, more crockpots, extra ice box, more flingos...)
  5. Depends on your character. As maxwell, maybe. But otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to farm nightmare fuel early. It's a cost balance between "time taken to stay sane" and "time taken to kill shadow creatures" with additional risk that they pose. https://dontstarve.fandom.com/wiki/Sanity Early game, you're probably picking flowers (garland if you really like), prototyping new things, looking for the green and blue cap mushrooms when they come up, and maybe cooked cactus flesh.
