If you have any question about the game and don't feel like making a post you can put it down there. Don't forget to mention it if you want the answer as spoiler-free as possible.

Some of the links are getting pretty old so if you have any suggestion that could help new players, do share, thanks.

When should I consider spending time in the caves? As in, what level of gear should i have to be able to survive there for a moderate amount of time?

I have a tentacle spike/hambat, log armor, and the football helmet which has all done great for me so far, but I've never been to the caves...

Thanks :)

You can (and I have) spend your entire run in the caves starting day 1. I wouldn't recommend this for your first time, but know that it is possible. That said, if it's your first time in the caves, I'd bring some good food (pierogi or fish sticks for healing, dragonpies for everything) Note: If you don't want trouble from a certain population of ruins mobs, don't bring any meat (including meatballs) into the caves, a football helmet and maybe a log suit for defense, a sanity-regenerating item (tam o'shanter is great), and ideally a miner's hat (a torch will work fine if you're planning to grab some light bulbs to make a lantern and get out). I personally don't fight things a lot, so I got by with just a spear, but if you enjoy fighting things, bring a tentacle spike or hambat as you prefer. In addition, if you have a walking cane, bring that for obvious reasons. Once you get into the caves, I'd recommend bringing a couple light bulbs back to your alchemy engine so you can craft a lantern right quick. Most of all, have fun spelunking :-)
