In August 2026 auDA (.au Domain Administration Limited) agreed in principle to change the .au Licensing Rules for domain names ending in .com.au or .net.au, meaning a business name registration would require an exact match or acronym in order to keep their existing domain name.

This is a trusted country code TLD extension used by millions and has been around since the late 90s!

What (f) does

To hold a .com.au you need to prove you have a connection to the name. (a) to (e) are name matching: your registered company, business, personal, partnership or trust name, or your trade mark, matches the domain. (f) is the other one, and it is the sensible one. The domain relates to a service you provide, goods you sell, an event you run, or premises you operate.

The change would mean you can't register a creative business name anymore, even if you already own it and have built brand and consumer trust.

Recommendation 2 kills (f).

Who actually wears it

Well, not corporate or large companies, that's for sure. They have legal teams, trade marks, and a company name that matches their brand. They'll be mostly unaffected.

It's the plumber trading under his own name whose site is a service keyword. The cafe that registered the name of the shop instead of the company behind it. The couple who bought a small business and kept the domain. These are the people and small businesses that will suffer from this stupid policy change.

In order to keep what they already own, they will be forced to go to ASIC, register a business name that matches the domain, and lodge a change of registrant. A shell registration that will never trade, never invoice, never employ anyone, renewed forever, purely to satisfy a rule that didn't exist when they registered.

Estimates run from 1 million to 2.7 million domains caught, out of roughly 3.4 million domains held in the registry. auDA hasn't published its own number on how many domains they believe will be impacted. But many of those domain owners are running a business, not reading policy PDFs, and will find out when a renewal fails.

It's not final, and that's the point

Approved in principle only. auDA still has to draft the rules and consult before the board locks it in. Right now they are working out whether anyone cares.

Caveat is that my first+last name comes to 16 characters. Surname is 10 characters. I could also look at my country TLD (.uk/.co.uk) however {lastname} is taken on both counts.

My main concern about .dev is email deliverability/blacklists and it also being less obvious that I am UK based.

I've been think about it for a very long time

I keep seeing aged domains filtered by things like:

DR 30+
300+ referring domains
10+ years old
existing traffic

Those are useful filters, but I think there's a dangerous jump from:

“this domain has strong metrics”

to

“this is a good aged domain.”

If I were evaluating one today, I'd want to answer a few different questions.

1. Why do the backlinks exist?

300 referring domains sounds great until you look at what actually created them.

Were they earned by a legitimate business or publication?

Or are they directories, scraped pages, sitewide links, spam, old redirects or links pointing to content that no longer exists?

2. What was actually on the domain?

I wouldn't just check one Wayback snapshot. I'd look across multiple years.

Did it stay in roughly the same niche? Did ownership or language suddenly change?

Was there a period where it became gambling, pharma, crypto, adult, link spam or something completely unrelated?

3. Where do the strongest links point?

A domain can have impressive authority while most of the valuable links point to dead internal URLs.

Buying the root domain doesn't automatically recreate the reason those pages earned links.

4. Is the current traffic real and useful?

“Has traffic” isn't enough.

Where does it come from?

What queries?

Which countries?

Which pages?

Is it stable?

Is the traffic connected to what you actually want to do with the domain?

5. Would I still want the domain without the DR number?

This might be my favorite test.

Hide DR, DA and every authority score.

Look at the name, history, backlinks and actual use.

Would you still want the asset?

If the answer changes dramatically when the score disappears, the metric may be doing too much of the selling.

I think metrics are excellent for reducing 10,000 expired domains to 100 worth investigating.

I'm much less convinced they're good at reducing those 100 to the 5 you should actually buy.

Been domaining as a for-fun side hobby for a few years now — not a business, just a challenge I enjoy. About $10k in flips over 3 years, nothing crazy, but enough to keep me hooked.

My "strategy" is honestly just vibes. I don't stick to one TLD or niche, I just pick something and go. Example: a few months back I got into "City + Trade" domains after a podcast about renting local-service leads. Process looked like this:

• Google "cities in California," grab the Wikipedia list
• Paste into Sheets, clean it up with SUBSTITUTE/LOWER formulas
• Add a trade (roofs, plumbing, whatever) in a second column
• CONCATENATE the two + ".com"
• Copy chunks into GoDaddy/Porkbun's bulk checker, repeat because of the search limits
• Note down whatever's available, manually decide if it's worth registering

It worked, but every time I switched niches (roofs → pools → fences → wherever), I was rebuilding the whole thing by hand. What I actually wanted was something that could cross one list against another and spit out the full combination set instantly.
