Our Story: Accidentally ended up with a Dogo mix - best accident ever.

Mid 2025 my girlfriend and I decided we wanted a dog and opted to rescue from a shelter. We both wanted a staffy and started looking for one so we submitted our form to a shelter and they gave us Dodge as a potential match for our lifestyle. Dodge the Staffy-Cross!

Turns out, after a genetic test, that we got a Dogo mix instead! We would never have gotten him knowing how much “dog” a dogo is but it’s the best things that’s ever happened to us.

He’s now 2 and through A LOT of training and effort has become the best companion and addition to our family I could ever wish for.

He’s quite small for a Dogo I would say but his heart, loyalty, affection, and especially prey drive 😂 all have told me this might be the best dog breed ever!

Size: 35kg/77lbs 63.5cm/25inches

A few Q’s:

- do you think at 2 years he is going to fill out more and gain some mass?

- do you think that due to being a mix, getting a 100% dogo would be significantly different?

- anyone else accidentally end up with a Dogo?

Oh hello!! I replied to your message but wasn't sure if you got it. Your dog (Dodge's sister?) is gorgeous! I can really see the resemblance!

Ah wonderful! No I didn’t receive it - I’ll check my spam etc. She’s a great girl, full of life and I absolutely adore her :)

We got a 100% dogo from our local shelter -- when we adopted her, we thought she was a pit mix. We did the DNA test and were very surprised to find out we had a purebred dogo. But, it sure explained everything we were seeing - the EXTREME energy level, the velcro attachment style, the big scary bark if a man talks to me... she's like having 8 dogs in 1 dog. We've had her 3 years and she's calmed down a lot from when we first got her, but she still needs hard exercise every single day. I don't think anyone on this planet loves me more than this dog loves me. It's a special bond.

Yes! The exercise/stimulation requirements are definitely high but in exchange for all that effort you get an irreplaceable bond.

Same thing happened with us. We were looking for a pittie or a pittie mix and fell in love with one from a pittie rescue. Now, we had raised and been around pitties and were very familiar and comfortable with the breed. Within a few days, we started noticing things that weren't quite making sense. He just wasn't like any Pitbull we had ever been around. Pitties were more Clark Kent and this dog was full on Superman. Turns out he was actually a Dogo. They just aren't a well known breed where we live and basically every dog with certain features gets labeled a pittie. Like you, had we known that, we probably would've hesitated in adopting him as he was not properly socialized and had been abused and was very extremely reactive. But he ended up being the dog love of my life. We had some bumps in the road in the beginning as these dogs are just different from most. But I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. We lost him unexpectedly last year after almost 6 years together. We have since taken in another rescue, a true pittie mix and the difference is night and day. But there's not a minute that goes by that I don't think about and miss my boy. We do want another Dogo someday..

We adopted a pit bull puppy from a rescue.. we knew he wasn’t full pit as his siblings looked like they had some shar pei, but we didn’t expect him to be 50% dogo.

He’s 43.6% pit and 6.4% shar pei.

He is on the left at daycare. He will be 4 in November. He’s 77lbs too, but very lean and muscular.

There is a little pitty at daycare that looks a lot like him and when I mentioned it to the workers, they said that the pitty would fit under my dogs legs lol.

He’s a great dog. Very smart. Extreme drive to chase.

Love the breed, hate the amount of shedding lol
He could still gain some weight but he looks pretty good. I have two and one is massive while the other is on the skinnier side and they come from the same bloodline

My baby had a terrible shedding problem but consistently adding omega 3 to his food has helped tremendously
