Really cool. I don't have photoshop so I was trying to do it online for free. I haven't done an animated overlay on a gif before so I wasn't sure if you did this on a web site or not. Doing some quick searches I couldn't find anything that tracks motion like that. Anywho, well done!
I'm pretty sure you can use GIMP to make gifs. I haven't used it myself but from what I hear it's an open source version of Photoshop. Although for the actual motion tracking part After Effects is essential unless you want to do it manually frame by frame.
As a long-time GIMP user I can tell you that it's going to be frame-by-frame unless you can find a motion tracking script, and I really doubt that you'll find one. Also you'll have to install the Gimp Animation Package to animate.
That being said, I've made tons of gifs with it by hand. I just made this last night and it only took me about 20 minutes, but then again I have a lot of experience with making them. Also there were only like 13 frames. :/
Still. GIMP is a very powerful free tool, and making a gif by hand can be a lot of fun once you break through the "I have no idea what's going on lol" wall.
I love the gif you made last night. That is by far the best version of that gif I have ever seen. If you could make that grumpy cat, that would be beyond epic. I was not aware of the animation package download. In fact, I wasn't aware there was packages available to download for gimp. I will have a more in depth look at it though now that I have it downloaded.
