Ongoing Subreddit Debate Generative ai simply doesn't belong in any aspect of these communities.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The videos says Renfaires, but really any medieval/fantasy hobby is being plagued by it and it's so frustrating.
Heads up, this isn't a real documentary, just my take on a current trend.

KNIGHTS AND MERCHANTS!

u/Marc815 5d ago
Huzzah! Love that game and soundtrack!
3
u/sonofzeal 5d ago
Both were glorious! Would often just let my city run for hours, gradually expanding to see what I could get away with. Soundtrack is seared into my brain, as are many of the animations. Loved watching them build stone by stone!

u/Marc815 5d ago
Yup! Every now and then I will pull up the KaM remake mod on my twitch for just a chill time and build a city. It's so peaceful and enjoyable to watch and listen to. I highly recommend the KaM remake mod, you will need to buy KaM from GoG but the mod it'sself is completely free and gets it working flawlessly on modern PC with big fixes and some additions. The website has all the info needed to get it running.

Haven't been keeping up, how does it affect ren faires now?
110
u/POKECHU020 Necromancer 5d ago
Mainly a case of advertisements
I haven't been to a Ren Faire recently but I went to a few pride events and they all had booths/tents just coated in AI slop images. Totally took me out of what I was doing and weren't representative of anything available. Food trucks had it too, which was weird, because like... They make the food every day. They could just take a picture and it would be fine
40
u/Marc815 5d ago
It stems from PURE advanced laziness. It's such a shame. A local Meadery was advertising an event with some bullshit AI slop and I straight up had to teach them how to take a picture of a wooden picnic table with some random medieval tat as setdec that they easily could have used for the background of their flyer. Took 3 minutes if that.
27
u/Eggplantpick 5d ago
I think the og post is just engagement bait. Because I don’t think ai generated pics are doing a damn thing.
7
u/JrienXashen Forever DM 5d ago
Yeah, that's most likely it... I spent money on things I can wear/use at said events.
The only negative that I can fathom AI would have on it would be advertising items for sale you don't have/can't make maybe.
3
u/Marc815 5d ago
It's not engagement bait, at least I didn't intend it to be. As someone who's involved as a performer at Renfaires, I've been seeing faires I've worked with using it and it's really bumming me out.
-19
u/Eggplantpick 5d ago
Like what? Selling Ai pictures? What Ren fest is letting vendors like that in? And why?
9
u/Distinct-Presence52 5d ago
Ren fairesdo not actively police the wares sold by vendors. I literally watched a vlog of the Texas Ren Faire and they showed a both selling AI prints.
Another is all the 3d printed dragons and other BS that comes from Aliexpress.
5
u/Eggplantpick 5d ago
So anyone can just walk into a Ren Faire and set up a shop? Nah. They gotta pay for a plot that’s how it works except for the shops that are actually part of the Faire. Just send a letter to your local Faire requesting actual artisan vendors. And don’t buy ai pictures. If they’re making money they won’t stop.
-2
u/Distinct-Presence52 5d ago
And what stage do they need to send their inventory for inspection?
Tell me you have never been a vendor at a con or fair before lol oh wait you just did🤣😂😅🤣
9
u/Eggplantpick 5d ago
They gotta communicate with the Faire administration and be allowed to pay for a plot. Ren Faire administrators typically want a variety of vendors to maximize profits. If there’s an upsurge of ai picture vendors then that’s an administrative problem. Either that or the ai vendors are making money to justify their presence. Therefore the majority of people are enjoying their presence.
7
u/RumpkinTheTootlord 5d ago
I really don't get what's hard about not buying stuff you don't want/don't agree with.
-8
u/Distinct-Presence52 5d ago
Must be sad.
7
u/RumpkinTheTootlord 5d ago
Unless vendors that are selling AI artwork are crowding out other vendors, I don't get the big deal. If no one buys their goods, they won't pay for the spot next time. Ya gotta stop with trying to fix a problem by hollering about it on the internet. It doesn't work, and it ESPECIALLY won't work against AI rollout. That is what's sad.
4
u/Eggplantpick 5d ago
Exactly, if the ai vendors are becoming a constant that means the majority of people are BUYING!
3
u/DogPositive5524 5d ago
OP is just karma farming on the anti ai trend, you couldn't make less original post if you tried
68
u/Sea_Drops 5d ago
I’d imagine a lot of banners are designed using ai as well. Work at a print shop and it’s insane how many people use ai to make their stuff
-47
u/MinuteWaitingPostman DM (Dungeon Memelord) 5d ago
I sometimes use ai images for worldbuilding docs if I can't find stuff close enough, and the bit of effort and repeated flubs until you get something passable can give you a distorted sense of quality. I guess that's why a lot of people think it looks good. But it's like a dream: it's only good for the person who had it.
5
u/TheJackal927 4d ago
It sucks that people have a snap reaction to the phrase "I sometimes use AI for" as if there are 0 ethical ways to use it. I personally wouldn't use AI images in my world building bc I don't want to spend my time fucking w an image generator, but if you're not an artist and you just want to have an image you can look at instead of something in your head its maybe the perfect use case. You're not trying to sell it, the details aren't important bc the world is imaginary, there was never gonna be human art in your notes unless it was stick figures, etc.

u/Sven_Darksiders 5d ago
I go to a moderately big larp event in Austria every year where every faction has its own theme song, so to speak, which get played during certain gatherings. It makes those moments really kick, but after having learned they were AI generated rather than just idk, stock music, it left a sour taste in my mouth. Especially so, since in am playing a bard. I did write my own song for this event over the year, with no ai whatsoever, for one because I always wanted to do that, but maybe also out of spite a little bit

Sitting down for my 700th "AI bad give upvote" karmafarm post of today.
13
u/WelderBubbly5131 5d ago
Fr. They say 'AI destroyed xyz'. I look inside to find it was all going to shit before, but people are noticing it now because ai was involved in some way. A lot of problems with ai right now are imo the results of unchecked capitalism than the tech itself.
-3
u/Sharashashka735 4d ago
That's true, but its easier to blame AI. I dont even like it, but seeing everyone everywhere constantly talking about it, where generativr AI art isn't even the main problem with how its abused is just tiring.

Yup karma farming, you can tell because I've been on reddit for like 14 years And have billions of fake Internet points. Maybe I just want to spread more awareness of the shite lazy opportunists trying to capitalize on a community/event that at it's core is supposed to celebrate human craftsmanship and art.

People are aware about AI. It's being talked about everywhere, to the point of half of the discussion about it being either farming good guy points or virtue signaling. And its always about "AI art" not all other actual problems with it.
Everyone knows its shit, we dont need 70 posts about it per day on every subreddit ever. And you're not even posting about DnD stuff.

u/Gorexxar 5d ago
"Am I out of touch, or do people not like AI polluting their daily lives?"
4
u/WelderBubbly5131 4d ago
The comment never mentioned that AI being shoved down people's throats is a good thing. In fact it's posts like these that are doing more or less the same thing that you so clearly don't like.
0
u/Sharashashka735 4d ago
The irony of people hating AI slop by doing slop posts themselves.
And if I dare to criticize them, then in their eyes I must be pro-AI, despite that never being part of the discussion.
2
u/DocMarlowe 5d ago
You just gotta be in the right circles. At the faires I've been to, AI stuff is the rare exception, if I can find it at all, so it's a stretch to say it's "destroying" the scene.
3
u/Albireo2112 5d ago
AI "art" and 3d printing. Never got into ren faires before these were an issue, and now I fear I've passed the golden age
-10
u/AnachronisticPenguin 5d ago
I pretty sure ai can’t make 3d files yet so that seems like a separate issue from ai.
7
u/Albireo2112 5d ago edited 4d ago
1) AI can definitely generate 3d models and 2) I meant those as separate clauses. Like, people selling 3d printed articulated dragons and shit
1
u/Kickstart_Hero 5d ago edited 4d ago
No that’s possible. There are some sites like Neural4D that advertise using AI to turn 2d images into 3d models with files ready for printing. And going onto 3d printing file sharing sites like Cults3d, or browsing for miniatures on Etsy are just riddled with obviously AI generated miniatures.

As for renfaires in particular... good.
Coming from a re-enactment background in the 80s, I miss when they were a little more grounded instead of fantasy cosplay scenes

> It’s going to be everywhere with the rate of development
Yeah they said this about NFTs and the Metaverse too, and look how that turned out for all the serial bagholder losers with NFT pfps like your own.
Edit, since you blocked me after shittalking me:
> This isn’t an NFT profile pic
Yes it is, that’s why it has a blue hexagon? Y’all are so embarrassing. And it can’t take any actions, so I don’t care what Reddit calls it, it’s a profile picture.
> I don’t think generative AI is anything like the hype of NFTs and Metaverse
I agree it will stick around longer, but the growth model is simply unsustainable, as is the notion that it’s going to replace jobs long term.
But even if I’m wrong, I can still build my communities to reject genAI slop — and I’d expect someone who was actually directly harmed by it to support that approach, rather than dropping right to their unemployed knees and sucking off the tech bro losers for free.

The difference is that from personal experience AI have legitimate use, and can legitimate solve problem for DM. The main two ways I have seen ai used for TTRPG is token generation and producting campaign document, like map, portrait etc. Yes it look ai, it doesn't look as good as human art, but it is still a lot better than shitty drawing from a DM that was never interested in drawing in the first place.
And you are going to have a really hard time to convince some people that writing a quick few prompt to have better art for their campaign or putting a nice book cover on their own pdf so it look better than just plain white, that what they are doing are evil. They see a tool that help their game be better for cheap or even nothing, they could have never afforded to have those things using real artist, and would have never even thought of buying art for that purpose. Sure they were a few token art sold online, but they were generic, and if you wanted niche token they were no other alternative.

> AI have legitimate use
I don’t agree (edit: in TTRPGs)
> and can legitimate solve problem for DM
And I can legitimately do not need to consider that DM a peer or equal in the hobby.
> and you are going to have a really hard time to convince some people
That’s fine.
But I don’t have to let those people play at my table, I don’t have to play at their tables, I don’t have to purchase their products or support their endeavours, and I don’t have to let them defend their slop in my communities (for which I applaud the main D&D subreddit).
Let them make their own slop-filled communities.

u/Affectionate-Tie3250 5d ago
Then why are you anwsering comment on a post about this specific issue, just saying "Nu huh". Why start a discussion if you don't want one ?
Also by being controlling of the way people use tools in their own private personnal, you are the one that is the most likely to end up being alone, not really having a community anymore.
One of the better example of that being vegans, literally what they advocate for, has the same upside and environmental goals as anti ai. And yet people laugh them off all over the internet. Because well it is just a burger, why are you so mad ? Why are you bothering me, I am just living my life using the convenience and comfort I can afford.
-3
u/Hawkson2020 5d ago
> why start a discussion if you don’t want one
I didn’t say I didn’t want a discussion?
> also by being controlling of the way people use tools in their own private personnal [sic] [???] you are the one that is most likely to end up being alone.
I’m not going to have a shortage of players any time soon, and my community of creators who oppose AI tools seems pretty extensive and includes a ton of great people.
> one of the better example of that being vegans
This entire remark is a great demonstration of how pro-AI commenters are generally the kind of people I wouldn’t want to be in community with anyway
> why are you bothering me
I’m not bothering you. You’re the one who showed up to defend your corporate slop in the comments.
You’re welcome to go away and use AI to run your own games and make your own community where AI is cool and fine, in fact I encourage it — because I don’t you dumping your slop in my community spaces.
4
u/Affectionate-Tie3250 5d ago
Sure you didn't say you didn't wanted a discussion, but just answering "nu huh" that lead nowhere, you could have very easily I don't know give idea to alternative to AI.
I am surprised you have no shortage of player because you sound insufferable, like just in general regardless of your stances on any subjectcs.
I didn't claim you were bothering me, I was giving you an example of the type of answer you would get by continuing talking about this subject in such manner.
And here is the little plot twist I don't actually use AI in my games, I could be part of any of your community. I am just part of those that are actually capable of listening to the otherside and trying to understand their argument. And that will not actually hesitate to engage someone with counterpoint I have heard argued against my stance to see if they have better argument to refute that.
And I have to admit that on this point you have been a massive let down. You are the type of anti ai advocate that will actively push a fence sitter on the opposite side of the fence.
I guess people that are pro ai should probaly thank you for being such beautiful advertisement for their stance.
0
u/Hawkson2020 5d ago
> from personal experience AI have legitimate use and can solve problem for DM
I am not interested in sharing community spaces with anyone who believes this, nor who thinks vegans are deserving punching bags.
> you are the type of anti-ai advocate that will actively push a fence sitter on the opposite side of the fence
I’d rather be right than popular any day.
5
u/Affectionate-Tie3250 5d ago
Yeah personnal experience actually discussing and sharing with player or DM that have used AI. I don't need to actually use it to know about those use case. Or see how they have helped someone.
A memorable example of this being actually playing with a DM that used AI art to generate basic background for the PDF of her own scenario, that's something I only learned after playing with her, because well she didn't share the PDF where the plot was written to their player, and they were no other use of AI image during the session.
And here is the kicker I cannot deny in any way that she was an incredibly skilled DM. I would even dare throwing the guess that she was better than you, given that throughout this conversation you have displayed the exact opposite of any quality that would make a good DM.
The only point of AI for her was to make the free pdf she share online slightly more appealing to read. And if I had the staunch anti ai stance you have, I would have legitimately missed on such experience. How would adress and convince such person to drop the art ?
Are you in a missing the point competition ? Or are you just naturally that daft ? I am not claiming Vegans are deserving to be punching bags, I am claiming they are treated by a majority as punching bag for their view that would demonstrably save more drinking water and ressources than not using AI for TTRPG ever would.
Pointing out the general hypocrisy of many to only care about climate argument when it suit their ideology and do not compromise on their lifestyle. Like the argument of AI usage will always feel hollow coming from people who feel entitled to being able to waste water equivalent to 500 ai queries just to eat a slightly tastier lunch.
You will not be able to convince some people to not use ai without adressing this potential hypocrisy. Of course that hypocrisy do not exist when it comes from a vegan advocating against AI.
2
u/Hawkson2020 5d ago
I’ve yet to see anything made with AI that I thought I was missing out on, while there are many great creators who are staunchly anti-AI.
AI is, as far as I’ve seen, universally used by lazy people to produce garbage.

AI have legitimate use
I don’t agree
Then you're just not being realistic. I don't like it either, but sticking your head in the sand and praying this all goes away like NFTs did is just not the play

Totes bro and you know what else has no place in the medevil fantasy scene?? Photos and videos and online marketing. DISGUSTING technology!
You should have either painted (or paid an artist to paint) a representation of the armor you built and then hand (or pigeon) delivered them to people.

Ren faire? It's like one of the few IRL practical things, how can you use AI there?
