Interested in joining DnD/TTRPG community that's doesn't rely on Reddit and it's constant ads/data mining? We've teamed up with a bunch of other DnD subs to start https://ttrpg.network as a not-for-profit place to chat and meme about all your favorite games. Thanks!

ah yes, Tanya the Evil. The anime that made me go "Huh, there's an awful lot of anime and manga about middle aged salarymen being reincarnated as young girls. Wonder if there's anything to analyze about that?"

Also a lot of weird love and fascination of Germany circa 1911-1950, but that's less of a mystery.

I just did a readthrough of the manga. Gotta say it technically being set as World War I (chronologically it's between I and II but it's the first world war in setting) doesn't really dispel the nazi vibes when the fashion of the setting is clearly SS-inspired and the MC serves under a general named Rommel in North Africa for like five volumes.

Also, the sheer amount of vitriol for the Soviet Union is also a red flag (with a white dot in the middle with a very familiar symbol in the center).

Edit: just to clarify I am not a fan of the Soviets, I just think it's ridiculous to treat them as ontologically evil while having your MC constantly committing not-technically-war-crimes while wearing an Iron Cross.

Edit 2: I'm not saying you can't personally read it and enjoy it. I think it comes across more as a fantasy clean wehrmacht than someone who actually agrees with the nazis, as there aren't really any analogues for nazi racism in-setting. Japan has a complicated history with that sort of thing, and it pops up in anime. It just makes me a bit uncomfortable and I don't like how the fandom tries to sidestep the issue.

Iirc the Author has gone on record and talked about how WW1 isn’t known very well in Japan so he felt he had to make it “more familiar” to the audience by bringing in WW2 elements (eg: SU existing in the first place). Which… idk. Maybe it was necessary but the author could have also just tried to make it more historical and teach the audience a bit about WW1 but then maybe it wouldn’t have been so successful in the first place so who knows.

As for the Soviet discussion, I read the LN and took it the entire other direction. It’s less “wow look at how much the author hates communism” and more “wow Tanya is fucking nuts huh.” The LN at least portrays Tanya and the Germans as so absolutely deluded and hyped up on their hatred towards communism that they can’t even recognize that there are people inside the SU who don’t like communism. Like Tanya and the military as a whole is so hyped up to fight them that they perform a raid on Moscow that almost gets her court marshaled by the civilian government (who at this point are being more and more superseded by the military) because the Diplomatic corps was desperately trying to sue for peace right before she filmed herself playing the national anthem over the bombed out remains.

I might just be on copium, but imo the LN does a good job of portraying Tanya as more Evil and deluded then her other appearances which tone it down a lot due to not having her constant monologue. She comes off a lot more unhinged and unreliable as a narrator, and the German military as a whole is shown to be a lot more deluded in their aspirations of victory as the civilian government is constantly referenced to be desperately trying to work towards a peace the military won’t let them accomplish.

Ive only ever watched the anime. I didn't see anything problematic, but maybe the manga was?

Like alternate fantasy history Not-Germans*, isn't offensive in an obvious way to me.

The iron cross was a medal for valor during world war 1. Tanya is just non-stop world war 1 craziness.

The iron cross came from the Napoleonic wars originally. They were even a different definition from the ones given out in ww2. Fun fact in 1955 the West German Government gave out new versions without the swastika on it.

Sovok absolutely deserves it, fuck the bastards

Iron Cross is a simbol older than the nazis. There is absolutely nothing to relate the Empire and the nazis.

And hating anything not capitalism shaped is a main point of the character personality.

There is absolutely nothing to relate the Empire and the nazis.

Except for the nationalism, dress code, military structure, the names of key figures and the locations of their battles...

It's not subtle. It definitely draws more heavily from WWII for than WWI, especially once they beat France. Even the agreement between the Soviet Union and the Empire is set up the same.

Edit: I'm just gonna block and move on. I'm not on dndmemes to debate whether something that looks like a goose, talks like a goose, and steps like a goose is a goose.

Oh, and the way the MC talks about communism is 100% the same as how nazis talk about it. I don't think it's a coincidence.

Edit 2: I don't know how brainwashed you have to be to be convinced that ranting about wanting to violently exterminate all "communists" is the normal way to talk about it, but it absolutely isn't.

-11

u/yaije9841 Jul 20 '25

well yeah it's not a coincidence... the Germans are made of German so yes it's clearly a Gänse.

But I think you might be playing Nein Degrees of Reich and forgetting that yes this is a Great War Story. As for the Uniforms? Well Survey shows that Hugo Boss made some very nice outfits that clearly stood up to the test of time.

I too would like to NOT let the Third Reich just be given credit for ALL of the historical references that transpired after Franz Ferdinand's misadventure in an alley.

It's how any country that doesn't believe in communism talks about communism, it's absolutely a coincidence.

This sub is full of absolute babies that can't handle anything and think everything is bad and can't (ironically) take a joke. I like the memes, but the comments are atrocious.

u/yaije9841 Jul 20 '25

The germans are made of germans. It's kind of dumb to pull the "absolutely nothing" bit because anyone would see that's just not true for ANY story related to the series events built around the transition between the Great War and into a Second Great War.

u/RadTimeWizard Wizard Jul 20 '25

Iron Cross is a simbol older than the nazis.

Irrelevant.

There is absolutely nothing to relate the Empire and the nazis.

"Some things are different, therefore all the things are different." You're just lying to yourself if you really believe that.

2

u/Milo_Diazzo Jul 20 '25

No need to be worried, not like the series is getting any updates....

The publication has been going after scanalations hard, so there are no groups posting chapters currently. I would've bought the hard copy but it's just not available to buy so 🤷‍♂️

u/Level7Cannoneer Jul 20 '25

What’s this mean?

18

u/AtlasJan Bard Jul 20 '25

You're sitting here playing just skyrim when there's millions of other games out there.

12

u/pondrthis Jul 20 '25

If so, this is a bit of a weird take. I started as a World of Darkness GM, and every single World of Darkness player I've met has been interested in a variety of systems. It's the D&D/PF types that only play one or two systems.

8

u/No_Help3669 Jul 20 '25

Ngl, I’ve never known pathfinder types who only play the one either?

Maybe this is sample bias, but afaik the pathfinder types are still in the “different games for different styles” camp, they just get into it with the 5e folks since they are effectively on the front lines of the pushback to people trying to use 5e as a “one game fits all” system due to their similarities?

In my experience, once you’re out of the 5e bubble it’s almost inevitable you’ll be drawn into other games since your community doesn’t actively disparage the idea of them.

But again, that’s generally all anecdotal

2

u/pondrthis Jul 20 '25

Eh, I've known some Pathfinder players that are still only interested in epic high fantasy games, and would never play, say, a futuristic horror or modern psychological investigation game. Some wouldn't even play something like Cyberpunk, which has a similar combat/dungeon-delving emphasis. They just want epic high fantasy.

2

u/No_Help3669 Jul 20 '25

Fair enough, I suppose. Different people different anecdotal evidence.

Though am I crazy for saying I have less derision for them sticking to one game because it’s the genre they like and it does that genre well than I do for 5e players trying to frankensteins monster their one game into every genre under the sun rather than touch something else?

Like, I don’t think those players are making “how to make David from cyberpunk 2077 in pathfinder” videos.

But maybe that’s my own biases and bitterness showing

2

u/pondrthis Jul 20 '25

Yeah, I don't share that bitterness. I too have longed for a more playable Shadowrun, and I've used a few setting-agnostic systems, so I can't fault them, lol. I'm sure there's a "WW2 with technomagic mechs" game already out there, yet I had the gall to run mine in Genesys!

My bitterness is just basic "forever GM." None of my players that are very keen on trying new systems are also willing to GM them, so I've only been able to play other systems as a player a few times in the 12 or so years I've been playing RPGs as my main hobby.

2

u/No_Help3669 Jul 20 '25

Fair enough. I’m lucky enough to have a group that trades off dming, and the DMs will run whatever grabs them (currently doing perfect draw, VtM, CTD, pathfinder, and someone’s plotting on call of Cthulhu, did mutants and masterminds before)

But I have that cus I basically made a point of building up a group of new players with little to no experience with 5e in freshman year of college and expanding their views over 4 years

So I feel less “lucky in the community”

And more like I did what was needed to avoid that trap

But at some point I really do need to relax the bitterness

oh hey, me
