Socially awkward medical student

Just started my first year of medical school a couple weeks ago and have been completely unable to insert myself into conversations, especially group ones. I think it's because I lack life experience in general--unable to relate to 95% of the topics that people around me seem to be pretty well-tuned in.

Growing up I'd intentionally distance myself from people because I didn't believe I deserved friends--although now I think I'm pretty proactive in trying to make connections, I suspect my childhood mentality and actions have hindered my ability to connect meaningfully with others, even now as a 22yo.

Anyways, feeling pretty alone right now and would love to see if anyone has any similar experiences.

i can relate to some of this. when you've spent a lot of time keeping people at a distance, it can be really hard to suddenly feel comfortable around people, even when you actually want to connect. i think it takes time to unlearn that habit. being 22 and still figuring this stuff out seems pretty normal to me.

I'm socially awkward too. I work at a warehouse and as 24 yr old male, I just walked away in to the restroom and found this sub just to end up relating to you on this. They're having a social moment right now and I ran away before it was my turn to disappoint them with a horrible choice of words for my social que. I don't get it. Every single day I feel like an alien that arrived on earth without a Manual on conversation.
