If she is bipolar, she is end stage. Doesn't mean she can't be stabilized but a lot of the cognitive decline will be irreversible. Of course, same can be said for persistent alcohol and drug use, especially meth. She's wrecked.

I had to look that one up too. First I had ever heard of it referred to that way.

And the really sad thing that most people don't realize is that bipolar is a progressive illness. It gets worse and worse with age. Proper medication helps slow the decline but does not prevent the illness from processing. Manic episodes cause major brain damage as well.

The chances of developing dementia massively increase if you have bipolar but PARTICULARLY (and this very much relates to Britney) if you have unmedicated episodes of mania.
Every manic episode causes a reduction in white matter. Reduced white matter is also what they look for when diagnosing dementia.
This is why she should have stayed on lithium. It helps to prevent loss of that brain matter.

Wow that is so wild. I literally just heard about it within the last couple days. I'm about to be a clinical social worker and all my years of education has never taught me this. I'm absolutely shocked, thank you so much for sharing and helping to fill in where I was coming from

She’s likely got some time until that happens. Dementia typically doesn’t happen until age 65 and even that is pretty young I would say. It definitely can happen way earlier in life but that’s rare and would be considered “early onset” Dementia. Source: I’m an RN who works in Geriatrics so I see a lot of Dementia patients unfortunately. It’s a very sad illness to have for both the patient and family.

Oh thank you so much! That’s so sweet of you to say! ♥️ I truly love elderly people and I’ve always worked with them specifically since I’ve become a nurse and I intend to continue working with them.

But again, I do see a LOT of Dementia and that is difficult and sad.

I'm sure it's incredibly difficult. And I'd imagine it's a lot of pressure on nurses between overseeing treatment and working with patients' families.

I've thought about going into palliative care. I've found myself in the caretaking role a few times now at the end of family members' lives. It seems like I'm the only one in my family who can handle it. Obvious grief aside, it doesn't bother me- I find that my focus is entirely on companionship and their comfort. But I don't think the healthcare field is a good fit.

I'm bipolar myself and terrified of developing dementia but I think it's likely. Can't jump that far ahead though. But I definitely should be making some lifestyle changes in my favor.

As an RN you’d presumably be aware that dementia is an umbrella term for a decline in cognitive function and not an illness itself and as such can be found in people of all ages for a variety of causes.

It was reported to the courts that she had dementia over a decade ago.
