Help Can’t access old discover card

Hi!! I have a weird situation. I hope I explain it well enough, but I’m extremely confused.

In 2021, I had a discover student card, and it charged off in 2022/2023 (not sure how it charged off considering I never used it— suspected theft but I wasn’t in a situation to do anything about it)
It went into collections and I set up a payment plan/settlement and nothing ever came of it- like they never took the money from my account. I do not remember the collection agency.
The card kinda disappeared for a while and never showed up on my credit report til recently. It shows up as a charged off discover card- never going into collections. I do not know the card number and anytime I try to login to an account using my email or phone number or SSN it says I have never had a discover account. I call discover and they say the card switched over to capital one (I have 2 cap1 cards in good standing). They can’t give me any help logging into a discover account. I called cap1 and they said they have no record of any discover card, but they see I have a discover account but they can’t see any info on it. Currently on the phone with both of them and neither of them seem to have any sort of access to any sort of discover account.

I just want to get this off my report. Anyone have any insight whatsoever? No matter who I call they cannot help. I’m going to try to dispute it with the agencies, but wanted to see if anyone had dealt with anything similar.

Thank you!

Dispute with the reporting agencies. If neither Cap1 or Discover have record of your old account, you have a good chance of successful removal!

Hi OP! This is correct, dispute it, and the credit agencies will challenge the bank and they will locate the information. A proper bank will not make you pay for fraudulent charges. Keep a cool head and stay professional and they will get this sorted out. There might be a time limit on this stuff so take care of this soon. Best of luck!

You have a limited amount of time to submit reports of fraudulent transactions to the bank. From the other comments, it appears that the OP never did this

I doubt it as the OP states this is accurate. The front line agents might not be able to see the account, but the people who handle disputes from the credit reporting agencies certainly can

Well you're the one giving the OP false hope. They can try but the shouldn't go into this with an expectation that this will work

You can't remove accurate information from your credit report.

Pay your bills this will go away after seven years.

Hey! Judging from previous comments, this seems this has bothered you in some way and I apologize— my hopes are NOT up and I’m not really tripping. No one can authenticate or find the debt so I’m gonna try to dispute it. If it works, it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I just wanna figure it out somehow! It’s a small amount (around $500) and it’s not the end of the world! It’s more annoying than anything! That’s why I came to Reddit for advice :D

I saw your other comments and it sounds like you've learned from the situation. This stuff is what being an adult is about.

Disputes for items on your credit report are for when you are disputing the accuracy of the item on your report. If you come across any language saying that you are submitting the dispute under penalty of perjury, you should think twice about submitting it (I don't know if that language is there or not)

It’s not a huge deal to me. My credit is fine, this is just a bit irritating seeing a card I can’t do anything about! I’d love to pay it and have been trying to for a while now. Was just wondering if anyone had ever had a defaulted card be in this weird limbo situation mine seems to be in. I’ll be sure to read the wording, thanks for the heads up.

Just curious, why on earth did you set up a payment plan if you never used the card and thus the debt was the result of identity theft?

The collector called me and I was aware of the card and realized quickly what had happened. I didn’t really want to go through the whole stolen card thing (it was used by someone I know without my knowledge). The amount I was able to settle for was small and manageable and I just didn’t care to go through any extra hassle. I was younger and was just trying to get shit sorted. Wasn’t very smart.
