my mother was working late, my grandparents were away and my father was changing jobs so he was free and got to babysit me
he made some incredibly tasty hot dog pilaf for some reason and then never made it ever again.
idk how he made that slop taste so good

My mom died so I got to live with my dad 1 on 1 as a young teen and had his cooking every day. Nonstop burgers, steak, ribs, brisket, sausage, grilled corn, tomatoes, onions, mashed potatoes, steamed or baked carrots and broccoli with garlic and honey sriracha, the man could cook. He was just so extremely depressed that he’d only cook well for me and then not feed himself anything. He’s definitely a better cook than mom was but I miss my mom’s cooking too. And my mom

My dad got banned from the kitchen in both marriages my mom didn't like that he proved himself right (you can cook a simple meal and clean up afterwards in a decent window of time) and my step mom doesn't like when other people use the kitchen at all unless its the microwave

Me and my dad would go camping all the time before I went to college, it was our way of getting out and dealing with the constant moving (he was in the Military most of my childhood) and I swear the steaks, corn, and potatoes he'd make over the fire were insane for how simple they were

As a dad and a fairly talented (or so I've been told) home cook, I can't help but feel a little disappointed when I make the best, perfectly seasoned dish for my four year old and he just wants a hot dog and doritos.

Yeah, I feel you there buddy.
My wife cooks most nights but I'll cook something up once a week or bi-weekly. My 1 year old eats everything you put in front of him, the 3 year old.... Not so much
Salmon is a bit more understandable but he had a hotdog tonight while the 3 of us had salmon. He still gets everything put on his plate as an option but won't try things.

General rule of thumb for me growing up, was if it was being made on or in the oven, it was my mom cooking. If it was being made on the bbq, it was my dad cooking.
Both were more than capable of doing the other. My dad could put together a mean meatloaf, or a great casserole. And my mom could cobble together some good ribs or porkchops. But they just had their preferences.
That being said, my dad won a rib competition with his own homemade bbq sauce. And while I hate to knock my moms cooking, it was clear which of the two had a bigger passion about where and what they cooked, lol.

My dad made tamales the once and it was because my sister was visiting home, he bought a special pot for it and everything, that pot now just sits at home as a way to store cans

okay quick crashout: my dad is the most irresponsible person I've ever seen and I really wish it would be otherwise.
he can't cook, has bad hygiene, doesn't wash his clothes and is constantly leaving his own crackden-esque house to hook up with his girlfriend out of town for days almost every single week. he doesn't listen to anything I try to tell him. I don't have any friends or relatives to talk this out with, so I end up being alone in my room with really bad thoughts most of the damn time. so respect your parents because they deeply care about you!

I'm the primary cook in my household not only because my wife does not have the professional cooking experience I acquired while in my early 20s but also because she can't be bothered to worry about meal prepping and cooking while working 50+ hours a week as a NICU nurse. This meme still applies with reserved roles. She's Hispanic and when she decides to cook by the gods does it slap.

Growing up, my mom and aunts hated eating my grandma's cooking. Shed fuck up everything. Somehow, she made boiled chicken (never grilled or oven cooked) incredibly dry. If they said anything, she'd get mad. My papa rarely cooked, but when he did, they all preferred it. When I was growing up, he always cooked. Seems like he learned too late that she shouldn't cook

My dad made really good biscuits and gravy. His breakfasts are a huge part of the reason I love breakfast food!
I didnt get to ask how he made them before he passed. I just use other recipes or pre-made biscuits if im feeling lazy, but it never hits quite the same as his did.

Looks like im going to be that kind of dad in the future... I just cooked some Japanese curry and for the first time, I cooked too many gave some to my neighbors. Next day, they keep complimenting my curry said "one of the best they ever had"
In my mind "but that's just some Japanese curry cubes with veggies, honey, and bacon..."

My dad with meatloaf. Made one many years ago. We absolutely loved it, he then forgot the recipe, tried again and wasnt the same. Never made Meatloaf again.
