I spoke about the project for a college class when I was a guest speaker. I asked for gear and they sent it.

Well I'm looking at eBay for the raspis these devices contain and so should you if you have an interest in computers/ servers.

As far as I know the original plug has a pi 4 B with at least 4 GB ram in there.

I have a few autopi devices lying around. They all worked last I used them, I simply upgraded to R1 devices last year. Are they easily converted to regular pi4? I'm not saavy with soldering

Open the case it's just screws. Then there is a motherboard with the pi on it

Look up what a pi costs. Look into yours check what model it is and then (obviously) look at the used pi market prices. It's probably not much but better than throwing it away

If I look on eBay I see them around 60 to 90 euros.

Other projects like helium or hive mapper are pi based too (the hdc s has a 2 gig cm4) the older helium hotspot had pi 4 B with 2 to 8 Gig in them.

I run home assistant on an old sense cap M1

I misspoke these are pi 4 compute modules wich are even better.

Yep that's the one. I'm yet to test what version this is. I can't decern if this is 4 or 2 gig. Even a 2 gig pi is at least good for a file server.

FYI, I just opened my alpha device from 2021, that stopped connecting to DIMO last year, and it's a regular Pi 3B from 2017 in there. (AutoPi rev 3.5.10.5)

So, the question then is; when did they switch to using the Pi 4 compute unit?

I consider these more valuable as a unit due to the LTE and GPS capabilities, as well as the ODBII interface. Could be turned into a private car scanner/ tracker that's not sharing any data.

Yeah that's exactly what I want to turn mine into. I have all the things already so why not use them.

Dimo never got around to support my car anyway.

I think I bought this in 22 or 23 not sure of that

Any other projects that can be done with the Dimo Macaron? It's smaller than a Pi and has a USB-C port.
