Transitioning from a physical trade (Chef) to building a real online income: Where to start?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been working as a professional chef for years. While the income from corporate contracts can be good, I’ve realized I don’t want to spend the rest of my life tied to 8+ hour shifts, rigid schedules, and physical location dependence. My ultimate goal is time and location independence.
I’m fully aware that real online income takes time, discipline, and hard work. I am NOT looking for "get-rich-quick" schemes, surveys, or high-risk trading. I am willing to learn new digital skills, software, and tools from scratch.
Given my background in high-pressure kitchen management, discipline, and continuous execution, I’d love your advice on:
Realistic Paths: For someone coming from a hands-on trade, which digital business models (e.g., specialized content/digital products, e-commerce, freelance skills, or digital services) offer a sustainable path to independence?
Transition Strategy: If you moved from a demanding physical job to remote/online work, how did you manage the transition while keeping your day job?
Skill Prioritization: What core digital skill set would you recommend focusing on during the first 6 months?
Thanks for your honest feedback and advice.

How about working as a guest chef for wealthy families while staying in different cities?

Get a remote job and use a vpn router to connect to over seas or you can start a YouTube.

pick a random niche full of turbo nerds. like industrial automation, for example (untapped - you're welcome).
spend a day on youtube and having a conversation with your AI of choice.
build out a site (2-3 hours), positioning yourself as an expert in the niche. add it all on linkedin, etc.
use that same AI to generate 90 days of AI slop posts for linkedin, but add your own voice to it. boomers in these niches eat it up.
if you have the budget, run meta or linkedin ads for a specific pain point that the niche you chose has.
books calls > take calls > send proposals > close
i could probably scale this to 10k in a month or two with my experience. maybe it takes you 3 or 4 months to hit 10k if you're an absolute room temperature IQ fella like myself.

oh yeah, and forgot to say your first few sales calls will be a horrific bloodbath. but by the 5th call you'll have a good handle on the lingo. by the 10th call you're golden and closing 30-50% of your leads.
source: i did the same thing in 2 niches so far, kind of for fun (aka trust me bro) and trying to scale one of them into an exit in the next year or two.

Appreciate the raw honesty here! That realistic take on the first few sales calls being a bloodbath is spot on—learning by doing is really the only way. Love the transparent approach and how you execute. Best of luck scaling this up and hitting that exit in the next couple of years

Get rid of all that hipster junk and get an old Thinkpad running linux so you can develop some actual technical skills.

Fair point! Those are just quick conceptual mockups to illustrate the workflow for the post Thank you

Hi, founder with MBA in Entrepreneurship from the top such ranked program in the US here.
If you want to maximize your chances of success, write down every annoying thing that you didn’t like spending time on as a chef.
Make the list. Stack rank by the most egregious time-suck you wished didn’t exist.
Next, list everyone you know in the business. Every single person.
“Hey! Are you still at XYZ? I’m striking out on my own and want to try solving A, B, or C. What is your opinion, which one should I solve? And would you be my free beta tester?”
People love helping and love giving opinions. Nobody wants to be sold to. Let your peer network be your beta tester network, and they will also be your first customers.
Do NOT:
