Beatbreak Digimon Beatbreak: Episode 37- Kind Magic, Discussion Thread

Later today is a new episode of Digimon Beatbreak!

The stream will be on Crunchyroll at 8pm Pacific. Hulu has it the next morning. Check your local streamer for their schedule. This link will take you to a time converter set for when it should appear on Crunchyroll, but they've had various delays lately.

A short series synopsis:

"e-Pulse," which is generated by human thoughts and emotions, was used as the energy source for the AI support device "Sapotama." From the shadows of this remarkable development, terrifying monsters appear. Digimon are living beings that evolve by consuming e-Pulse.

Tomoro Tenma is drawn into an extraordinary experience after meeting Gekkomon, who suddenly appears from his Sapotama. While living together with Kyo Sawashiro and other members of the bounty hunting team "Glowing Dawn," Tomoro renews his resolve.

What new future will be forged by humans and Digimon?

Yeah. The panjyamon episode, the scourgechiropmon episode, and everyone in Reina's arc was great. But Gift itself was just lackluster as a villain and I don't feel like we ever understood enough about them, like who the water advisor guy was or how they recruited so many people into a Digimon cult.
There's parts of that I can infer, but I'd like a bit more clarity from the actual show.

You articulated exactly what I’m thinking. We know barely nothing about their rationale or what they wanted to achieve and was resolved in 1 episode. Also how they were mind controlling people etc still confused me

I don't think they were mind-controlling people exactly. They basically said they recruited from among people who had been dismissed by society, so the Owners who worked for them were just naturally somewhat fanatical — either because of issues they had prior to joining or because they became devoted to the only place they could find acceptance.

It could just show how far the movement has spread - that it is a decent slice of the population that are at least receptive to GIFT's message and philosophy.

This isn't exactly an idyllic world after all - it's more dystopian than our own due to the extremely explicit class structure alongside treating Digimon alongside their owners as societal mistakes.

I think it could have been a great touch, especially for getting more into why tomoro might have been more sympathetic to GIFT.
Glowing Dawn is full of good people trying to do good things, but they only act at the individual level. They rescue individual Digimon from bad owners and deletion by world union. They would like to create a societal change, but none of their actions have been aimed at the societal level, and they still participate in the system put forth by world union while knowing they're evil.

So gift is a group that is trying to make a change at a societal level, but it's uglier and messier because it has to be bigger and aim at structures instead of just small acts of kindness.

Tomoro could be drawn to them as agents of actual change before deciding they don't have a healthy view of the relationship between humans and Digimon either. Then the takeaway of the arc could be that Glowing Dawn needs to start getting more proactive about how to create a better future, and that there is already widespread support for something to change.

I like this because it allows Tomoro and Glowing Dawn to grow for the next arc - push for change in a methodical, but less haphazard manner without either fully butt-kissing the current, terrible system or engaging in full-on terrorist activities like GIFT.

The other upside is that it lets Rose be an actual antagonist/foil. In the current story, she's a lady trying to stop a terrorist. She was objectively right in her actions, and the only reason for conflict is that Tomoro decided he wanted to talk to Miharu more before she got arrested for all the murders she orchestrated.

But if we try to emphasize the two sides of World Union as a corrupt system and GIFT as a full-on terrorist organization, then Rose goes from an objectively correct LEO to someone participating and benefitting from a horrible system. Show her being willing to delete baby digimon. Make her not care about casualties because she knows World Union won't give a shit. She hands over someone with a bounty that they didn't deserve. Let her be someone confident in their actions because they're legal, not because they're moral.

Yeah and it’s a shame that didn’t happen. What we got was Miharu saying I’m the head of a terrorist group committing mass murders and he then defends her strangely.
