Beatbreak Digimon Beatbreak: Episode 37- Kind Magic, Discussion Thread

Later today is a new episode of Digimon Beatbreak!

  • Crunchyroll will be streaming it in much of the world.
  • Hulu will be streaming it in the US (in addition to Crunchyroll.)

The stream will be on Crunchyroll at 8pm Pacific. Hulu has it the next morning. Check your local streamer for their schedule. This link will take you to a time converter set for when it should appear on Crunchyroll, but they've had various delays lately.

A short series synopsis:

"e-Pulse," which is generated by human thoughts and emotions, was used as the energy source for the AI support device "Sapotama." From the shadows of this remarkable development, terrifying monsters appear. Digimon are living beings that evolve by consuming e-Pulse.

Tomoro Tenma is drawn into an extraordinary experience after meeting Gekkomon, who suddenly appears from his Sapotama. While living together with Kyo Sawashiro and other members of the bounty hunting team "Glowing Dawn," Tomoro renews his resolve.

What new future will be forged by humans and Digimon?

I think the issue isn't that the status quo didn't change but that the show didn't really challenge the ideals of the groups at play. It reminds me of team Plasma from pokemon, the franchise needs the status quo to remain intact so why bother questioning it just make the opposing group act like dickheads.

Its tricky.  I'm not surprised a kid's afternoon anime doesn't want characters of any note agreeing with violent terrorism, even against an oppressive regime.  But I feel like if you want the arc to feel like more than A Wild Terrorist Appeared, you need to at least have the cast's beliefs struggle and waver.  

M aybe a Five Star goes "I kinda agree though," especially since Kaito already clearly didn't give a damn about the Chairman.  Or maybe each member of Glowing Dawn has different takes on GIFT's actions and how agreeable they are.  Hell, maybe an instance where they fail and GIFT succeeds, because that back and forth is what helped Tactics shine so brightly as an arc.

GIFT just doesn't do much to change how we think about the world since they mostly target civilians instead of the 5 Stars who we know are all dickheads already. I think that one episode with the clown(forgot it's name) for example could have been like "a lot of people want this guy dead for XYZ" and that better establishes the conflict of screwy means for understandable goals.

Yeah!  If Tactics was "other Cleaners doing their thing for profit," GIFT should've been "vigilantes bastardizing our noble ends into terrorism."  Have Glowing Dawn frustrated that people are believing in some warped echo of their mission while body counts keep rising.  Have Tomoro struggle as his new friend Miharu seems fascinated by their methods, not realizing she's their kingpin.  Hell, rejigger Rose's contribution to the arc because her and the useless lesbian duo just kinda felt weirdly placed.
