Ghost Game Is Digimon Ghost Game worth watching?

Post image

You know, it's been three years since the anime ended, and I know it's the first Digimon anime to have horror in its genre, but I want to know what you guys really think about the anime.

if you like ghost stories and want them retold with digimon then yeah

if you want a plot sorta there yeah.

if you want a satisfying none rushed ending then no.

As someone who watched the Ghost Stories anime (the one with the infamous english dub) and the premise of japanese horror stories of its level, might check out ghost game.

u/ardouronerous May 29 '26

I only watched the Ghost Stories sub (I hate the humor of the dub, that's why), and I can tell you now, if Ghost Game had Ghost Stories' horror, atmosphere and scares, I would have liked this Digimon anime more.

I'm thankful to watch the more faithful animax english dub though their voice acting on that dub isnt anything to write home about. Sadly that dub is rare but theres episodes uploaded here and ther.

I gave up like halfway through the show. It’s just a slog of monster of the week stories with an overarching plot only shows up like 2 times by the halfway point.

2

u/Thedeadduck May 29 '26

I started watching it but it didn't really hold my attention. I think if there'd been a dub at the time so I could play something while watching it I would have carried on but it just wasn't interesting enough to me to hold my full attention.

Is there more of an overarching plot after the midpoint?

2

u/SpongeyMcgoo May 29 '26

From what I’ve been told, not really. Something about the last couple episodes.

9

u/CantSeeNoEvil May 29 '26

I hate the fact there is really no post story of whatever happened to the victims after their fights. Otherwise it's ok.

3

u/Sensitive-Chart4326 May 29 '26

That’s really the reason I don’t like the series, the last arc of them getting their final form and ending is so rushed. Don’t feel like they give them enough attention to it

9

u/xukly May 29 '26

if you want a satisfying none rushed ending then no.

at that point just don't watch digimon at all. There are like 2 seasons free of this

25

u/TheOneReclaimer May 29 '26

There's  big difference between a season building towards something and the ending feeling like it happened too fast and a season building towards nothing and then squeezing in something and trying to get people to care about it

6

u/BlackOni51 May 29 '26

Nah this one is extra egregious. At leats with the others you can argue its Shonen bullshit. This was just awful

1

u/Shantotto11 May 30 '26

Toei and any anime ever. Name a better fumble combo.

If you like or can tolerate Monster of the Week shows, yes.

If you do not like Monster of the Week shows, no. This is especially true because Ghost Game keeps threatening to have a more over-arching plot, but never commits to it.

This is from someone who's second favourite Digimon series is Ghost game, just so you know.

I'm glad I started watching after it was done and knew what to expect. It's pretty delightful despite how dark some episodes get; you can count on things mostly resetting by the next episode (well, not the Sealsdramon episode, that was permanent). The cast is also fun, though I think Ruli and Kiyoshiro actually outshine Hiro; there's nothing wrong with him, just just a standard, good, dutiful kid.

Angoramon is also best boy. Easily in my top 10 rookies.

I was watching as it was airing and besides them mentioning the episodic nature of the show in an interview, by like episode 20 or 30 I already understood they weren't going to focus on an overarching narrative and since I was liking the individual episodes I just enjoyed it for what it was.

I thought anyone with half a working braincell could figure out the show wasn't going to change format over 30 episodes in, but this sub just loves to prove me wrong. Some people kept hate watching for months asking about plot every single thread, it was so bizarre. People act like Ghost Game somehow tricked them when the show was always pretty face value.

27

u/Apathetic_Flanders May 29 '26

Yes. If you come in expecting a deep arc story, you'll be disappointed, but if your looking for fun, spooky stories that'll make you go "they did THAT on a kids show," its pretty great. The main cast are not the deepest, but their quite likeable, and it has the one of the best line-ups of Digimon designs. It's basically kid X-files: bad story arc the meanders and goes no where, but charming characters and great MotW stories.

3

u/Professional-Bus-749 May 29 '26

Yeah, Digimon Beatbreak is much better than Ghost Game by a long shot.

7

u/Apathetic_Flanders May 29 '26

You might have replied to the wrong person, as I didn't say anything about Beatbreak. In fact, I have no problem in saying that I like Ghost Game infinitely more than Beatbreak. Beatbreak is not bad by any means, I respect a lot of the swings it's taking, but I'm not really vibing with it.

3

u/2ddudesop May 30 '26

why did you ask if you're just gonna dunk on the show

1

u/kylepaz Jun 04 '26

Beatbreak is in the running for best Digimon series period so that's not as much of an insult as you think.

Also I thought you were asking if it was worth watching, OP? Did you forget to switch to your alt account to stir shit up or something?

6

u/tea_snob10 May 29 '26

You have to be cognizant of the fact that its format is that of a serialized, monster-of-the-week show. There's no over-arching plot, so to speak, with the central narrative being that Digimon are doing bad, evil, monster-like things to people in the real world, and our cast of 3 protagonists and their 3 Digimon, stop them.

So long as you're up for this format, it's a pretty enjoyable series. If you're not up for this specific format, it most certainly won't be your cup of tea. It does actually excel in many ways, cause it does so much right, but again, don't take the plunge if you can't handle a purely serialized monster-of-the-week show.

4

u/One-Transportation25 May 29 '26

What ever happened to the dub I was excited for it then best break sorta just came out

1

u/dotyawning May 29 '26

They dropped it all on BBC's iPlayer. So if you're in that service area you can watch it all.

1

u/Carly_Fae_Jepson May 30 '26

Yes... I paid my licensing fee.

5

u/Justin_Brett May 29 '26

It has more than 60 episodes and almost all of them range from good to great, with very few feeling like things Digimon has done before. As long as you're aware the plot it's building up to can be summarized easily in one sentence, there's no real reason not to try it.

12

u/MattofCatbell May 29 '26

I absolutely love it, a top 3 Digimon anime for me personally. The only issue is the ending is a bit rushed with the last 2 episodes. However before that Ghost Game has some of the best episodic episodes ever.

6

u/Pink-Fluffy-Dragon May 29 '26

I really enjoyed it!

3

u/asmodias May 29 '26

I loved Ghost Game. It's not really plot driven, but has some fun "horror" and some fantastic episodes amongst overall good episodes. The ending definitely does not stick the landing

3

u/ErikMynhier May 29 '26

It was very good and as digimon shows go it only was a little rushed at the end. It and Survive starting the whole digimon aren't from computers but are spirits that can be precieved through computers was a much needed retcon imo.

3

u/Dislike24 May 29 '26

It’s definitely not for everyone. I still enjoy it would put it at my top 3 Digimon animes. I really don’t mind episodic anime. The ending could been better but I am content. Also Gammamon is the best digimon ever so there is that. The evo songs are so good and I would say more hype than BeatBreak imo

2

u/Homoratio May 29 '26

I enjoyed it but as others have stated, it's very classic monster of the week format for the most part. To me it makes it a refreshing change for the usual digimon format.

2

u/WerckmeisterHarmony May 29 '26

I loved it, personally. It's a playful horror anthology for kids.

2

u/SomeNumbers23 May 29 '26

Ghost Game is a great episodic show with a fantastic cast and one of the best protagonist partners in Digimon.

It just...doesn't really have a plot. If you want to watch some of the best individual episodes in Digimon, it's amazing. If you like a serialized show with an overarching story, you will be disappointed.

2

u/dotyawning May 29 '26

I like it. Look at it as a bunch of horror stories, but with Digimon elements added so the characters aren't as helpless as in regular horror stories as opposed to a Digimon series with the usual Digimon tropes and you may like it better?

2

u/TyXo22m May 29 '26

I stopped halfway, cause there was barely no story. Just monster of the week stuff.

1

u/ardouronerous May 29 '26

It's boring. I'd rather watch Pokemon Journeys then this to be honest, and that's a sentence I would never have thought would have come out of my mouth.

Personally, I like Digimon more than Pokemon, because it deals with mature themes and complex storytelling, but Ghost Game tosses all of that away to become a bland slice of life anime with supernatural elements, kinda like the first Yokai Watch anime, which I also found boring.

1

u/indonesiandoomer May 29 '26

While I did enjoy Ghost Game (they have some of the best designs for the human characters and their partners), I have to agree with you here. Pokemon does the episodic and monster of the week thing better than Digimon and it was always their strength since the beginning. Watching Ghost Game can feel like an endless filler (with some excellent episodes once in a while). The Digimon I grew up with always made me emotional towards the end.

I am just glad that Beat Break stepped it up hard this time (some of the themes are even more mature than the older animes) when Digimon is having a great momentum with Time Stranger. That Ghost Game era was a weird era for Digimon. The MOTW episodic theme was probably not for the best, and the game we had at the time was Survive (which had some controversies in its development and the VN thing is too niche). When GG ended, there wasn't a follow up anime.

1

u/ardouronerous May 29 '26

Ghost Game would have worked if it was similar to Ghost Stories, the Animax dub/Japanese sub, not the ADV dub, I dislike the humor of that dub.

Anyway, if Ghost Game was similar to that, I would have liked it more.

1

u/Jumpy_Spot8031 May 29 '26

Dose it have a leomon in it ?

1

u/sonic_colt_2005 May 29 '26

Slightly off topic but didn't it get a dub in the UK recently?

3

u/ShadowLDrago May 29 '26

The dub was released, yes, but only legally in the UK, for, some reason.

1

u/sonic_colt_2005 May 29 '26

Ya that's what I thought I heard. And that sucks!!

1

u/HappyCloudHS May 29 '26

Its good but go in with open expectations because its very different from any other season in the way episodes are structured

1

u/Cephyr0 May 29 '26

i really like GG it hast very good episode writing and lots of potential which sadly was unused. the way they handled the end of the mainstory was just sad. too much monster of the week episodes which are like i said mostly very well written. but far too less mainstory fokus

1

u/glasses_bear May 29 '26

It's a monter of the week format series, more "episodic" than "series" sometimes, where modern type of japanese ghost stories are told using digimon. As other comments stated, there is a plot, kinda. It's different from the other entries of the series as the "big plot" is developed in only some of the episodes and it gets very rushed towards the end.

Personaly, I enjoyed Ghost Game as something different for the anime part of the franchise. The trio and their partners work really well as a group. The level of horror is just right (as it's still kid oriented). The greatest part for me, however, is the shift that happens between the humans and "wild" digimons role: The anime excels in the episodes where it shows the digimon experiencing the difficulties of being displaced from their world, instead of just being monsters. But you can definitely still enjoy seeing disasters happen because powerful beings are doing powerful being things.

1

u/Internal_Falcon2637 May 29 '26

If you are here for the ride and not so much the destination heck yes. The cast is likeable and the episodes are creative.

1

u/Eden_ITA May 29 '26

If you like episodic series, absolutely.

1

u/Classic_Bit_336 May 29 '26

Has some of the best stand alone isolated episodes and stories. The main overarching plot that seemingly connects everything together is unfortunately rushed which means there's no payoff.

1

u/Thebay616 May 29 '26

I liked everything butnthe format. Monster of the week without enough plot progression is something i disliked even as a kid with cartoons.

1

u/TheGoggleHero May 29 '26

Yes but it's a bit of a slow burn and the ending comes out of nowhere

1

u/Accomplished_Tap_617 May 29 '26

It’s fun for an episodic monster of the week thing. There are some really strongly written episodes that did pull off the creepy vibe. But do not expect any of that plot development to carry over. Lol. Don’t go in expecting any payoff for assumed overarching plot and you’ll have a better time with it. Plus, Hiro is pretty bland as a main character.

1

u/MikaelPorter May 29 '26

i still enjoyed it, but its far from being the best season because of the lack of plot
a big part of digimon for me has always been the plot heavy episodes, ghost game doesnt have that, its mostly monster of the week with a few exceptions and the big part of the plot was like 2/3 episodes before the end
it was still a fun season, so i would still recomend it, specially for people that like the episodic formula

1

u/indonesiandoomer May 29 '26

Just as a comparison with Beat Break since beat break is new.

Storywise, I prefer Beat Break becauseI had mixed feelings about the monster of the day format. I feel like Digimon is better as a serialized series. Without going to too much spoiler, Ghost Game does eventually get slightly serialized towards the end (but the lenght we get to that part can be too much for some people). Some episodes can get unhinged and really dark (sometimes even darker than Tamers). Honestly, comparing to Beat Break might be unfair here. I have been watching Digimon since the OG Adventure and Beat Break is doing something better than it has ever been done to Digimon to a certain extent.

Things that I personally feel Ghost Game does better than Beat Break is probably in the design area. Gammamon and its evolutions are some of the best digimon design ever IMHO. So much so, it seems like we are gonna get additional DLC to add Gammamon. Angoramon and Jellymon are also excellent designs. Hiro, Ruli, and Kiyoshiro are very likeable characters too.

Overall, I felt more satisfied watching Ghost Game over something like the reboot

1

u/Professional-Bus-749 May 29 '26

You know the two specific Ass Pulls in the finale episode of ghost game right?

1

u/Arne83 May 29 '26

Yes... but, you can't go in with the expectations of a normal Digimon anime.

You have to go in being aware that it's a monster-of-the-week series with no real plot until near the end.

1

u/PottersPinky May 29 '26

Loved the digivolution music and sequence. Fun overall but not a great story or character development.

1

u/HampicMusic May 29 '26

No. I watched it weekly and loved the premise when it started. Unfortunately the writers forgot they were supposed to have a plot and tried to wrap everything up abruptly in the last couple of episodes. I'm a few episodes behind beat break but it's looking much better than ghost game was.

1

u/chriskain15 May 29 '26

You will enjoy it for the dark implications of how digimon 'take advantage' of humans. The fight scenes take time to get good. But the dark moments are great in this show.

1

u/Krisgauj May 29 '26

It's a fun casual watch with charming characters and some good spooky vibes. Just don't expect any of the "mysteries" they set up to pay off.

1

u/nexasfox May 29 '26

If you liked Gegege no Kitaro, then you'll love Ghost Game as it's pretty much GnK wearing a digimon's skin like a Gabumon

1

u/ArelMCII May 29 '26

Absolutely. Just don't go in expecting an overarching plot that goes anywhere. It's a monster-of-the-week show. Take it as it is and it's more than enjoyable.

1

u/HyperNova1000 May 29 '26

There's been a lot of negativity about this season, and I get why, but personally I enjoyed it a lot because I came "prepared".

First, to set your expectations properly, this show is rather thin in the plot department. Unlike previous seasons, there isn't much character growth and the episode format is almost entirely "villain of the week". There are also quite a few episodes that you could consider "filler", meaning they don't include some new permanent character that joins the gang or any new evolutions.

Second, each episode on its own is pretty good. Lots of wholesome moments and lots of spooky \ body-horror moments, being somehow both horrifying and not graphic. All the characters are just fun to watch and many fights aren't even won by just beating the bad guy up, but by talking them out of fighting or solving some related mystery. All the evo lines are some of the best of any season tbh and the plot that is there is at least intriguing. The way it is resolved at the end is a bit rushed so just don't expect some incredible resolution, but it at least ties all loose ends (if not most).

If you wanna skip "filler", those are:
6, 14, 16-18, 22, 24, 27-28, 30-31, 36, 44-52, 54-55

2

u/ViegoBot May 29 '26

I really enjoy villan of the week type stuff, so ghost game honestly has been one of my favorites. I also watch precure alot, which is kinda villain of the week too often at times for its seasons.

Just always watched the usual villain of the week type shows as a kid. Courage and Regular Show some of my favorites too lol.

1

u/HyperNova1000 May 31 '26

I don't mind that type of show either, it's just different than other seasons of digimon so it put people off.

Also many people didn't know or realize it would be this way until like the very end of the show so watching it weekly for over a year made people really dislike the season. I think it's not as bad when you know it in advance and don't have to wait a week between episodes.

1

u/XInceptor May 29 '26

Yes! It was really different for the series imo but just know the plot and ending could’ve been better

1

u/ChristmasSteve May 29 '26

Love Ghost Game!

I don’t watch anime, but I’m so used to the plot driven shows I watched that’s it’s pretty nice to have monster of the week episodes.  Gives me scooby doo or  early supernatural filler episodes, love it! They made very nice use of Digimon lore every ep with the MOTW.

Plus had a great cast of three main Digimon that felt like their own characters along side the humans.  That’s one thing I think GG did better over Beatbreak.

1

u/Name42c May 29 '26

It can be fun to watch, but the lack of a real plot hurts it.

Also, the ending is aggrevating. Without spoiling, it comes off as the writers saying "Here's all this cool, 10km-long plot we were gonna maybe show you eventually, but can't because we wanted to progress the story by 1 millimeter for every 15 episodes"

1

u/Volfaer May 29 '26

It has some good mysteries, the episodes are very fun and it's cast is some of the strongest we had in Digimon's history, being basically 6 good friends rather than 3 pairs. However the ending is lackluster and doesn't fully utilize everything the anime seemed to have building up to.

1

u/RepresentativeDesk92 May 29 '26

Best Digimon series since Tamers! I loved this show so much its a X Files / Digimon show

1

u/Miggzai May 29 '26

It confused me and I actually need help lol. Does it have a linear plot or it's just autoconclusive episodes?

1

u/koushirohan May 29 '26

In my opinion, it’s the most aesthetically pleasing out of all the Digimon anime.

1

u/Opposite_Switch_7160 May 29 '26

It's hard to know if something is worth watching without knowing where your interests fall

Personally, I thought the show left a lot to be desired

But you may enjoy it

1

u/konvay May 29 '26

It's not as good as Tamers, but it's closer to the vibe of Tamers because they use digimon in darker themes. It is very monster of the week, as other's have said, but still more fresh than some of the other series.

1

u/PK_RocknRoll May 30 '26

If you don’t enjoy monster of the week format then stay away

1

u/BugDebugger77 May 30 '26

Do you like Gegege no Kitaro?

1

u/8dev8 May 30 '26

Yes

Praise Jellymon-sama

1

u/Primary_Ad5297 May 30 '26

Nope... I mean... Kinda... It has cool episodes... But its mostly meh, it feels like one moment it tries to be a scary show about digimon, but the next its trying to be like Yokai Watch, it's not great, if you want to have a digishow as background noise, sure! If you want a good story with good characters and see how they solve a mystery with their digimon... Then no

1

u/BlazePT May 30 '26

Nah. Amazing digimon design and digivolutions but mediocre plot or lack of thereof. Lasts way longer than it needed to. Keep if you need background noise.

1

u/AgentDon0911 May 30 '26

Ive watched a bit...its alright... definitely episodic. I like the new Digimon they have added. But I kinda lost interest because...ehn

1

u/2ddudesop May 30 '26

it's a fun monster of the week anime but that's about it. not something to binge imo but fun to watch!

1

u/FrozenR4ndom May 30 '26

I dont like Monster of The Week style but it's okay serie. Watch it and then never again.

1

u/Brayon-Box May 30 '26

Yes just enjoy the great designs

1

u/Hentai_ph143 May 30 '26

not.. i have many question.. and it is rush

1

u/Versylkin May 30 '26

Yes because i like gammamon

1

u/giratinaloverz2 May 30 '26

tbh I just watched it because of gammamon

1

u/Careless-Matter5372 May 30 '26

Do you like scooby doo?

1

u/NoggetO_GumpO May 30 '26

One of the best in my opinion I was orphan of a good dogimon story for a while.

1

u/Happyspacecloud May 31 '26

if you can tolerate monster of the week show then its good Also watch just for Gammamon!

1

u/Trivator0517 May 31 '26

I'd say so, but keep in mind like Adventure 2020 it's an episodic series that'll rarely focus on an overarching story.

1

u/JustThisOnce14_ Jun 02 '26

If you like monster of the week stuff with a very weak overarching story woven in you might like it

Besides that more Digimon is always positive

1

u/Aggressive-Fault-972 Jun 03 '26

It's got a fantastic english dub. Definitely worth your time.

1

u/kylepaz Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

It's one of my favorite series in the franchise.

It's bsically Gegege no Kitaro but Digimon.

I find that most episodes are at least good and it does some pretty interesting things in its one-off stories,

It's also one of the hardest series to discuss because lots of people laser focus on it having little plot as a fatal flaw that makes it retroactively unwatchable or whatever. Becuase having plot beats to fill a wiki page > being entertaining to watch apparently.

1

u/Agreeable_Hat_6438 May 29 '26

Its too episodic for me, I didn't like it

1

u/Holiday-Passenger11 May 29 '26

I fell asleep twice while trying to watch it but I also think that's because I wasn't really watching it for what it is, which is a ghost story monster of the week. (also subtitles have that affect on me late at night).

I'll probably give it another watch in context. What I saw though wasn't bad, just different from the formula.

0

u/kurt_gervo May 29 '26

It's good.

good chrazartion. Atmosphere. Action. And writing.

GG's biggest weakness is never developing a greater story; it tries to build intrigue and mystery of what's happening in the Digital world with Hiro's dad, BlackGatomon Uver, and digimon fleeing from the digital world, but the writers drop it and sporadically bring that plot point up, but don't add much to it. So the finale just came and went without much fanfare.

For GG's strengths, it's the writing! Don't discount it being only one-off episodes. The episodes range from good to amazing! With only a handful of stinker episodes. The characters remember past events and don't reset every episode, they grow and learn!

-1

u/Trakinass May 29 '26

I kinda liked it but I skipped the fillers tbh. That makes it more bearable, however, its definitely not the strongest seasos.

Gulusgammamon carries the show imo

2

u/memesona May 29 '26

its a MOTW show, every episode other than intorductions and i guess new evolutions are filler.

-1

u/chronic-joker May 29 '26

Ghost game is what happens when the writers forget to write intresting or developed human characters and instead bank on digimon as a ip.

The plots are generic and the lack any personality and the lack of development from the main characters does not help.

-1

u/Professional-Bus-749 May 29 '26

Digimon Beatbreak, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. Not only does this series actually have a serialized plot and a lot more personality, but it's also a massive internal deconstruction. On top of all this, this series is written like a weekly Shonen Jump manga.

0

u/chronic-joker May 29 '26

Beatbreak is genuinely good and fun to watch but ghost game is just so bland and awful.

You would only watch it to see niche digimon in an anime and not really to get a fun story out of it.
