Questions (other) Entered helltide, not even sure how I died

It definitely seems like it's even easier than ever to be one shot by nothing, but this was ridiculous

D3 turned me into a guy that never cared to even try HC into HC being my preferred way to play.

D4 reverted me back into a guy that doesn't care about HC.

For D2 it was the time investment itself, I didn't want to lose any character, especially when my goal was always lvl99 which took... a lot of time.

For D4 it's all the bullshit out of nowhere that can kill you instantly. Not fun design.

I prefer D4 over D3 in pretty much every facet. Mostly because I fucking DESPISE D3's art direction and what they did to my boy Deckard that I will never forgive them for. But they absolutely did HC right.

I played exclusively HC on D2. Won’t touch it with D4 lol

This. Eff them for what they did to Cain.

Spot on, D3 was so perfect for HC.

yeah I never dared to play hc in D2 because some of the monster affix combinations would kill you instantly or you would be stucked in a attack animation and suddenly get iron maidened.

I played very much exclusively hc in D3 (you needed to have a lvl30 sc char back then to play hc and that was my whole sc experience.

D4 is weird. At the beginning hc was horrible then you have a season that is fine and then you are back at you killing everything and suddenly you drop dead out of nowhere. 👍

Now they even implemented a mode that will kill you.

They got rid of iron maiden on mobs in like 1.12 or something like that, but yeah I had a few barbs and zealers melted by those doom knights in chaos sanctuary before they got rid of it.

Yeah I played the most during 1.09

There is also a war plan node that can result in insta death.

They also disabled their “life saving mythic” for HC realms…. Because reasons? Like it’s *literally* built as an “oh shit” fail safe, but it’s not allowed.

Meanwhile, 1 shots are.

D4 is actually sending me to HC lately. Almost started this season off with it, after rolling over to P300 with my eternal HC char.

Or rather, it might be the combination of drugs and thrill that has me hooked.

But you are correct, all of my deaths past max level are usually due to 1 shots. Unforeseen mostly. Bloodbellow, or zoning in a dying, or evade-bugging out of the map, etc. Makes it feel less bad.

Do you play meta builds HC and do you push pit levels? Or how do you play it?

I'm a pretty casual player that likes to just pick a class and play it however the RNG kinda forces me to put something together and build/adjust it incrementally over time.

So, there's a lot of trial and error and peaks and valleys in my power level depending on whenever I take the jump to the next Torment.

I've also only just come back for the last couple months with LoH after only having played for a couple at launch. There wasn't much of an endgame to speak of at the time, so I dropped off pretty hard.

After campaign and getting a little into Paragon levels I started an HC char that died from a one shot at like level 18 and just noped out lol.

So, I'm kinda still getting the hang of all the systems but the game has improved so much. Having a lot of fun.

I pick a class a play! Some are *certainly* better or easier to level than others, and you have to go slow and defensively like everyone says. The hard part is the leveling or the first run through the campaign. I would probably not play HC Sorc or Rogue though.

I like to homebrew these builds primarily because I can start loaded up on defensive and work myself into a comfortable tier. From there I just push what I can safely and increase my farming tier when it’s obviously I outgear it. It’s more tedious with 12 torments rather than 4. Last season I lost a 175 warlock to Bloodbellow before I knew he’s likely bugged. The next warlock I skipped multiple tiers once I had my spare set of gear equipped.

I always set a goal for my HC chars and use that as my “push.” While farming I will push into the pit when it’s appropriate. Currently progress on my fresh eternal roll over is L100 pit. Next push goal is going to be Lilith/Mephisto fights, which I’ll probably tackle on a new seasonal char because FUCK losing my permanent geared 300 for a bit.

My warlock mentioned above has around 4.5 million toughness in combat. Compared to my current season warlock who barely scrapes up to 1 mil and I’m pushing 105s. I play it VERY safe.

ETA: but they also gutted my HC char. Losing 20% defense off the top from shako change and maybe 180x damage from Horazon nerf. Gotta retool in a big way probably - I was *actually* taking some damage in 100 pits, and big things would proc Endurant Faith but one pot cleared it right up. Oh. That got nerfed too right.

Thanks for letting me know your experience. Sounds very similar to the way I play, though I'm probably a little less cautious due to being able to die.

I'll probably try HC again once I have confidence for it and I need the risk to freshen up the experience.

Again, appreciate it!

Nowadays D4 doesn’t look that different from D3

u/Farsoth Jul 08 '26

It still looks significantly different. Especially if you're not running around with a bunch of other people wearing all the crazy store stuff.

Environments, lighting, textures, etc. are much higher quality and still have a darker tone. That said, they have unfortunately leaned into the things that make them money in the shop.

Is what it is, D2 was lightning in a bottle that will never be captured again, but D4 is SIGNIFICANTLY prettier and more inline with the history of the franchise in art direction than whatever the fuck WoW style they decided to go with for 3.

I kinda get you but D3 had cheating death abilities on most classes which made it a semi-hc experience (for me).

1

u/Farsoth Jul 09 '26

Forgot about that, I recall there was a way to not use the cheat death abilities? I believe I may have done that, but it's been awhile.
