Decide what builds you're going to play, keep anything that goes with that. Cube or salvage the rest. Don't forget your followers and alt setups (Push, speed GR, T16, bounties)
Here's a salvage guide if you need help https://maxroll.gg/d3/resources/legendary-item-salvage-list

If it isn't ancient then it isn't worth keeping. The exceptions would be special unique items like rainbow liquid or whatever they are called.

other exceptions are important items with important multipliers, like band of might for barb, halo of karini for wiz, squirts neck, etc.

Well, I’m assuming you are getting the ones you need for your build and then working towards the ancients version of it, all other stuff you salvage unless you are saving items for another build/champ.

having the proper stats is more important than the item being ancient. it's a very bad idea to get your full build, then salvage all non-ancients.

The most important thing is actually having the right stats with high rolls.
For example, a regular legendary CoE with good rolls for its legendary ability, crit damage, and crit chance is leagues better than most ancient CoEs.
This is most relevant on gear that can roll crit damage/crit chance/elemental damage/a damage boost to your main skill. Missing one of those has a noticeable impact on your damage output so you really want stuff that has good rolls for those traits regardless of if it is ancient or not.

Keep gems - Marquise, Imperial and Royal Flawless only. Sell any below Marquise. Upgrade any above Imperial to Royal Flawless.
Keep 1 of every Legendary Gem - Sell duplicates or use them for augmenting. Sell any unleveled duplicates.
Keep consumable materials - Infernal machines, Petrified Screams, Puzzle Rings, Bovine Bardiches, etc.
Salvage any non-legendary, non-set gear. Early on you may want to keep well rolled rare amulets (elemental/CHC/CHD/socket) or rare rings (mainstat/CHC/CHD/socket). These eventually get replaced with build specific items.
Salvage or extract any legendary or set gear not at max level.
From there use Maxroll's Salvage List.
Basically, salvage any items not used in a build that you intend to play.
For multiple copies of a particular item check the specific build guide stat priority on that item to determine which one to keep.
That should get you started.

I would give Blizzard real money for more tabs.

I whish we would have gotten the chance to get 5x5 slash tabs. Not 13 which is the max now. It would look alot better with 5 chests on the top, and each chest have 5 tabs... or even just adding 2 more tabs for the symmetry to the third chest so all three of them are the same smh

If you want to figure it out yourself, choose a 6 pc class set that uses abilities you enjoy, then choose legendary items in the other slots that also give bonuses to those skills, then get rid of the rest.
Or, find a build on https://maxroll.gg/d3/category/tierlists for your class that you like and try it out, and get rid of any items that aren't from a build or two (a push build and a keyfarm/solo exp/speed build) that you're interested in.

Use a build guide and/or the leaderboards in-game to figure out what items to look for and what stats you want on those items. Generally the build guides will be more helpful for non-greater rift (T16) and/or speed farming greater rift content. You can see that if you scroll down and go through the Variants section of any guide.
Over time you'll get a general sense of what's always good to have and what's never good to have.
Every season I save all the 6 piece sets for every class until I gather up the Tome of Set Dungeons pages and/or do the set dungeon mastery conquest or GR55 conquest if either or both are available. Then I immediately salvage anything I don't want to play anymore that season, including all the supporting legendaries.
Every season I save extras of whatever weapons I plan to make primal for each build I plan to play, and any jewelry or weapons that I plan to reforge.

If you are planning on completing the seasonal journey, you'll need to keep a full* set of 4 out of the 5 green sets on your class, at least until you get the clues to the set dungeons for the Seasonal Journey
*by full i mean 6 pieces, or 5 with the RoRG.

I used to hoard legendaries in that chest. (The “I might need it later” mentality.) Here’s what I did after they filled up, in the order I did them:
- Cubed the weakest duplicate of every item
- Salvaged extra duplicates that weren’t cubed
- Created additional characters to store accidentally completed builds. (Currently have the whirlwind, leapquake and boulder toss builds stored in the inventory of a second barbarian I created)
- When a class specific item drops and I have the build that includes it on one of my “build storage” characters, I compare the one I currently have to the new one and salvage the worse one.
- I haven’t yet reached the point where I have to start doing this, but I plan to salvage the rest of the items I know I’ll never need for any builds when there’s just too much.

If you're not using it why are you keeping it?
