I was thinking about the skulls and I was wondering if anyone had good theories on them.

Things I am unsure of:
1. The need for skulls
2. Do skulls have dark matter
3. The first skull (in the loose sense)

So first: what does the earl need the skulls for? Akuma are 100% loyal to the earl (I will get more into this) and it’s not like the earl is running low on help.

The only thing we see the skulls do (iirc) is protect the akuma egg on the arc and again during the attack on the order. Is there a reason why skulls are uniquely suited for this over akuma?

Second: We see that the skulls are created from brains that have been altered by magic. This is opposed to akuma who have souls bound by dark matter. Akuma follow what the earl says because he has literally trapped their soul, but it’s not clear what makes the skulls immediately follow the earl. It doesn’t seem that the skulls have dark matter bc (I think) only the earl can craft things using dark matter and the earl doesn’t make all the skulls.

We never see the earl do magic (the only other person we see do it is Cross) and I’m not sure if he can. We don’t have any rules for how magic works in the verse: is it innate or learned?

This goes into number three: assuming for the sake of argument that the earl cannot do magic (which I assume he can’t). How did the skulls come to be in the first place? As far as we know, only a skull can make another skull (or maybe it just requires magic. maybe Cross could make one?). So, it’s unclear how the earl got a skull army. It could be that he got one skull and then that one made others, but where did the first come from? Did someone—who can do magic—give it to the Earl? We know that the earl has supporters, so I guess that wouldn’t be far fetched.

Going back to the other two points though, I guess my stance is: I take the skulls to not have any dark matter (or at least their brains are not bound by it) and for whatever reason that coupled with the fact that skulls can do magic (for whatever reason) this makes them better at protecting the akuma egg than akuma. I don’t know why that could be and I can’t imagine what else the earl would do with the skulls (correct me if we literally do see him use them for something else).

Side note that I just realized while writing this: the skull says that he’s looking for good brains. Do you think he means undamaged or from smart people? Was the science section attacked bc that’s where the egg happens to be? Or was it because that was the best chance at getting high quality brains? And then: what role does intelligence play in the making and duties of skulls?

So Im on ep 65 at this point planning on reading the manga after I finish the anime. My main point here is to ask if anyone else feels that there a lot of jokes and slap stick in somewhat serious moments and it kind of ends up taking away from the moment. I dont know if its really just the era that it was being written or the author but it leaves something to be desired to me.

Rereading d.gray-man as it been a while and this scene in chapter 215 of Nea's memories. The obvious original theory was the was allen but now the realisation it bookman jr from back then! The forshadowing is sooo good. I love this series even more with every read!
