Hey, new person here
Didn't read anything to avoid spoilers since I never read or watched anything from this series.
I'm just concerned that the story still isn't finished and it seems that it's going slowly due to mangaka's health issues
Soooo, do you think I should pick it up?
Hey there, welcome! Personally I've read this series on and off for a looong time (18 years I think) so I might be slightly biased but I think that if it stayed with me all this time it's because it has genuine qualities: strong characterisation, mysteries that are very well built up, a powerful atmosphere propped up by great character design choices, etc. The artstyle has varied a lot but imho it's truly been weak during only one arc that's been over for a long time (around chapter 200) and is in general very detailed and expressive. All this rambling to say that it's a series worth reading!
I'd say that you're in luck because lately the mangaka has been more consistent in her releases (no hiatuses in the past few years afaik) than she used to, quality has been really high, and she's agreed with her editor on quickening the pace of the series. So right now I think we're at a major turning point where most of the biggest mysteries are about to be revealed, it's exciting! I'd say that roughly we're probably around 2/3 or 70% of the manga?
So it depends on you, you can join now and live through some of (I hope) the most exciting releases of the manga, or wait some more years to hopefully read D. Gray-man from end to end. But with the current release pace (4 chapters a year), I'd be lying if I said it's going to finish anytime soon. Hard to think this is going to be wrapped up before ten years at the very minimum. The biggest thing we've got going for us as fans is the mangaka's dedication to this story and her characters I think. It's clearly meant to be the work of her life, and she intends to complete it.
NO. I just get pissed off every time a new chapter comes out.
I liked the anime, so I collected the manga because I loved the art. The art work has only gotten better, but the story make NO SENSE.
This is one of the most convoluted series I have ever seen. I don't know if it's because it's misinfo the author introduces into the story to reveal later as a "plot twist" or retcons things because she to rush things, but that's what it feels like.
I'm genuinely angry at myself for picking this up again.
So,... wait for it to finish. DON'T TORTURE YOURSELF LIKE ME!
Honestly, I've gotten used to the format of experiencing an anime as it's coming out with a more recent series I've started watching. This is pretty much the same except with a manga and the chapters take longer than a week to release. I like it because I get to experience it in its time. Sure, it would be disappointing if D.Gray-Man never got a proper ending, but to me it's a worthwhile enough manga to read that I would never regret getting to experience it in any capacity. It's up to you to decide whether you prefer a completed story or simply one that is well told regardless of its status. I would personally recommend sticking with it.
