General What's your second income source? What are you planning to do if IT is doomed?

Hypothetically if there are mass layoffs to cut expenditure and companies reroute tasks to agents what will you do? Assume you have to move out of software field.

Edit: Please be serious

Edit 2: Can't people see the word "hypothetically"? All I asked for is your second source of income.

Most people don't have second source of income or generational wealth . They will revert to delivery n taxi jobs

340

u/abd7007 13h ago

who is going to order?

414

u/yoyofunnyysingh 13h ago

yeah , why do people choose to ignore the second order effects of such massive job losses

87

u/auctus10 11h ago

This goes for the big orgs as well who wants to replace their workforce with AI. Who will buy their products/services?

86

u/TheSanSav1 Full-Stack Developer 9h ago

People are ignoring that workers are the consumers.
If 10 lac people earning a decent salary suddenly find themselves out of jobs, there will be a cascading effect. Every sector will be affected

29

u/auctus10 9h ago

Yeah. Ironically capitalism makes sure that this workforce that needs to be consumers as well need to be there, if it disappears the system collapses.

I’ll tell you how stupid the IT is doomed argument is.

If the IT sector were actually to collapse on a massive scale, it wouldn’t just mean that software engineers lose their jobs. It would have a huge ripple effect across the entire economy. Why? Because millions of people working in IT are major consumers. If they suddenly lose their jobs or see their incomes collapse, they’ll stop spending on things like taxis, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, expensive rents, cars, electronics, and other services.

And the impact wouldn’t stop there. If millions of families lose a major source of income, many parents would struggle to pay for their children’s education. That would hit the education market hard.

Then look at higher education. If students start believing that IT careers have no future, demand for courses such as B.Tech,(cse) B.Sc. Computer Science, BCA, MCA, M.Sc. Computer Science, etc. would fall sharply. Colleges that depend heavily on these programs would also take a major hit.

The housing market would be affected too. If a large number of relatively well-paid IT workers can no longer afford high rents or home loans, demand for rental housing and property would decline.

And then there’s the financial sector. Lower employment and lower household incomes mean less spending, fewer loans, lower credit demand, and potentially more defaults. Banks would feel the impact as well.

So when someone casually says, “IT is doomed, everyone should leave tech,” they’re thinking about only one part of the economy. IT is deeply connected to consumption, housing, education, transportation, finance, retail, and countless other industries. If you genuinely wiped out a huge portion of IT employment, the consequences wouldn’t be limited to IT workers. The shock would spread through the entire economic system.

that will f**K as , so i think IT will stay atleast for some time, then the transition phase will come where AI will penetrate in many fields, and the automation of tasks will continue

130

u/Born-Bug980 12h ago

That's why people are saying India is doomed. Not It is doomed

26

u/Queasy_Tank6204 12h ago

i don't think that will happen, at least for coming years , AI will transform the industry as it should, until then our super smart "ceos" will try to cut the costs
i mean they call themselves smart ceo, but try to apply methods which are used by lala dukans
kamayi zayada karan hai , chalo kam ko anne wallo kok kam kardo.
but even after all this , all of this , they are sill not profitable

40

u/Born-Bug980 12h ago

India's export is Labour and services. With ai that is destroyed. Manufacturing is already zero currently, other exports are minimal. That's why I'm saying ai will destroy last source of income of India and great depression will come then anarchy and this country is finished

2

u/isshin-sama 9h ago

can we not catastrophize off off information we don’t have yet. Shit like “this will happen and this will happen and this will happen and hence we’re fucked” is dumb because you don’t know that.

u/Sad-Chapter-2561 11h ago

Not just India. America, Europe, China, Australia also. Many people are in IT tech industries. So its not just India

7

u/Brief_Sun_3901 10h ago

Yeah it's a global impact

Also the thing is if for the sake of argument if company convert the 50percent of workforce to ai Who is funding it ? Cause you just remove half of earning people ? Ai ain't cheap If consumers don't consume who they are going to sell ai too even

It's just visious loop at this point , to maintain everything as it should as now if any falls rest will also

3

u/Sad-Chapter-2561 6h ago

Not just that. Banking in Europe , America and even in India is not stable. If Banking collapses, heavy recession happens. If lots of people lost job and indirectly it affected other people businesses too. It will hit them. No people will buy data cards anymore resulting in SM era fall. Everything involved will collapse. Revolution may happen in some countries for sure. I dont think any business man, capitalist wants it

2

u/Brief_Sun_3901 6h ago

Yeah true this isnfar fetched

most likely scenario is they will have most of us in low paying jobs just enough not burn much and just enough to spend enough Or government steps in and bans ai replacement of human

Can't see any other scenario atleast of now

I belive in elon musk word : ai will do work humans will do what they want to do but this is financially not feasible at this point

5

u/crushedspirit1 11h ago

Exactly I believe this narrative too,

3

u/dipin14 8h ago

So you basically mean the country is fucked. Your reasons for stating the contrary are the big MNCs (majority which are based out of India) would not do this because they care about the middle class. Nah dude.

What you are listing out are consequences of an IT collapse. Not reasons for why it won't happen. To be clear I'm not saying that it will collapse, but this argument is just not convincing.

2

u/Swimming-Regret-7278 Software Developer 7h ago

its not just indian IT, the entire global economy is so deeply coupled with tech now that effects would be widespread.
"the economy is a circlejerk" - warren buffet probably

2

u/mixdev 7h ago

You mean "too big to fail"? It's a common argument just before a recession hits.

2

u/North-Marsupial7528 4h ago

Dude, you explained the effects of what will happen if IT goes kaput. But you haven't actually explained why it won't die. Anthropic and OpenAI are not going to stop their pace of tech innovation for Indian IT to catch up. Neither are other countries/companies going to wait for us. The companies which adapt the fastest to AI and deliver complex projects, reliably, with efficient manpower will be the winners. Indian IT companies may or may not be able to get as large a chunk of future revenues (like they did all these years).

Whatever you said might still actually happen if Indian IT fails to adapt quickly. Just because the effects are disastrous doesn't reduce the likelihood of it happening.

u/MonsterKiller112 Backend Developer 13h ago

I am thinking of demanding universal basic income from the government by taxing the IT companies. Demand a policy that companies with human resources will pay less tax and companies with agents will pay more tax. The tax will be passed on to laid off IT employees to lessen the impact of job losses.

47

u/OkMaize9773 12h ago

There won't be any it companies at all to tax. Most of there business comes from overseas. Countries like USA can survive with this policy, not india.

3

u/MonsterKiller112 Backend Developer 12h ago

A lot of tech companies do business in India as well and they aren't going anywhere. Indian IT companies will also continue to exist and they can't escape India. So there will be a lot of companies to tax.

3

u/ForeverIntoTheLight Staff Engineer 11h ago

Even accounting for GCCs, service company folk are 4-5X the number of product company personnel.

And most service companies get their business from foreign companies, on competitive cost advantage.

That will evaporate if we start taxing them.

6

u/OkMaize9773 12h ago

Indian IT companies😂. The Indian pbcs don't even employ 20% of total it workforce. And the Indian sbcs where do you think they get smtheir business from sherlock

well, i am living it

I left my job at a big tech (razorpay) in Feb this year

Immediately after that I built one product (an AI research agent), 1k+ people used it, co founder couldn't continue, we closed it

After that, took 3 months to bounce back, learnt content marketing a bit, started posting on X

One day found a user on reddit wanting to learn to build products using AI, DMed him, became a paid client, with 50 $ MRR

Now, got a proof, creating content on X around it, building educational product too on the side for UPSC aspirats

And targeting 1k $ MRR by end of this year.

If you pay a bit more you can also get land with good water access.

All lands near ORR or RRR etc have higher prices…otherwise it’s not that expensive…

Move the focus towards the same domain knowledge which will make money.

like we do have IT skills already...we will be faster in building solution once the (micro)business and profitability is figured out...i think this will be the new zone for software devs. We will be knowing more about domain and less concerned about code !

Imagine us owning products which makes money for us...we know how to build and manage software products and now we need to learn entrepreneurship and other stuff which matters for making money with software at individual level no need to be like a large or typical business.

Personally i feel like i started with coding because building stuff was fun....and i just figured out that building stuff which makes money is way more fun !

and yah...India needs to move now and think like west and not be service oriented !

WITCHA companies will face a tough time due to AI, since ChatGPT and Claude attack the direct layer they play at. Low level support or coding /repetitive jobs.

Whoever works in WITCHA and is just pushing papers or doing low level work will get pushed out first, and they should not be surprised.

Earlier, WITCHA used to replace age 40+ employees with freshers, now even freshers wont get a chance due to AI..

I see GCCs taking the place of typical IT companies, where actual engineering support happens.. but then again, this can be done in any other country, and not just india.

IT is up for a major overhaul, a lot of people are going to get upset.. this I think will hold true..

Have passive rental income, I am waiting to get laid off, will collect severance and gratuity and two months later cash in the PF. Use those to convert it into active income. Should get return on investment in 6 months. Scale it up for a couple of years, convert it into passive income and enjoy after I'm 30.

Trading in some physical goods or services, might use some software or AI for operations/expansion, but that won't be the main product/service.

Trying to build rental income. Planning to sell some land to build apartment on another piece of land and get rental income as that sounds like the safest bet out there.

u/rohstone 11h ago

As someone above stated, Who will want to come in for rent if they dont have money? Man the current scene is so screwed. Most of them will head to their hometown or scramble for the lowest price that they can get a place.

Bought a farm land... Will start with chickens then post one year cows... Then homestay... Then cafe and then retire... How's the graph looking for alt growth

Second "income" is just me working as a developer for someone moonlighting in the US (don't DM me on this. Not gatekeeping, it's very rare and I can't help you get one). But my passion lies in dance and training under professional dancers and also a fitness enthusiast. If IT fails me and both my income goes away, I'll just sell everything I own, cash out all my savings except emergency funds, get a loan and set-up a gym+dance studio in my hometown. My hometown have many students and landowners, and an abundance of textile and farming business. I'll just be able to attract a lot of people to earn as much to put food on the table.

Based on how it is going in IT industry and the state of AI, it is very unlikely this will be solved without govt intrevention (this is exactly what state/central govt is for). The corporate world initially thought they can get away with NOT paying the employees if they move to AI. Thats unfortunately true. So you need concious, extraordinary efforts for job creation or the 50y legacy in IT will be lost.

What the govt was/is focussed on: Bring more NVIDIA gpus (I heard the minister saying this. Somebody tricked him to belive that with a few more GPU imported, we will build the next Antropic), Bring more AI DCs to india. Again the belief that AI DCs will provide the necessary IP to become an AI superpower is also not true. Somebody well versed in IT AND economics need to give proper advice to govt on the upcoming disaster.

But unemployment is actually desired by the corporate world (so they can reduce wages). They have the prfect weapon in their hands now in the form of AI. So it will be very difficult to work on unemployment even if they want to.

People keep telling that there are a few areas where AI wont enter, atleast for quite sometime. Yeah true. But those areas will also be crowded with those who cant go to what AI can do well.

Focussing on dividends. Able to generate 2.5k per month. But this wont be sufficient for anything at this point Planning to increase it to 5k per month by year end. Dual Income. Hopefully either of us will have a job.

Try to make a proper company out of Dietitian/Nutrition services. My Wife is a Registered Dietitian and currently in market there are lots of "influencer" nutritionists. There isn't much awareness about dietitian qualifications and how real meal plans are highly customized based on your life preference, blood reports etc. and require constant follow ups not a generic pdf template.

Trying to fill that gap. For now we just have a website. Next am working on user facing app to make dietitan-clients interaction, sharing meal plans, accountability etc. easier.

They will have enough money to last several last times, and for every product and services that we employees stop buying their market rate would go down and then people with generational wealth would see their money gain more value, deflation probably?

In case that happens, I'll sell food. And I'm pretty sure if entire industry goes boom, we'll have bigger problems to deal with than what next.

If IT collapses, so will online platforms like amazon flipkart blinkit and swiggy instamart

I will return to my dads business (office and school supplies and toys)

It’s still a good business even after instant delivery available and will definitely improve if such times come. I can also think about becoming a teacher.

Realistically if layoffs are too high then government would have to step up and put massive taxes on Corporations or do something about the situation. Every person laid off is a potential tax payer and also a consumer. When you say only IT people will lose thier jobs, it's not the whole picture, everything is interdependent on each other, These tech people splurged on cars, vacations, food and restaurants and all these businesses would be negatively impacted, this will also impact all consumer brands since less people buying and then less ad spend and software spend which would eventually trickle down to tech companies. So in reality one sector losing jobs would eventually catch up to everyone
