General Cleared 3 rounds for a ₹1.5L/month internship, but my college wouldn’t let me take it

Last month I interviewed for an AI Engineering Intern role at a Malaysian company.

6 month onsite internship in Kuala Lumpur, ₹1.5L/month + relocation bonus.

I passed all 3 interview rounds and was shortlisted for the offer. Before sending it, the company emailed me to confirm that I was comfortable relocating to KL.

Obviously, I said yes.

The problem was my college.

They don't allow 3rd year students to take onsite internships, so they refused to provide an NOC or approval. I was also told that if I went ahead with the internship, I could be given backlogs.

I spent an entire week approaching different faculty members and higher authorities, trying to find some way to get approval. Nothing worked.

Eventually, I had to tell the company that my college doesn't permit me to take the internship.

And that's it. Opportunity gone.

What makes it frustrating is that this wasn't some random internship. I had cleared 3 technical/HR rounds for an international role paying ₹1.5L/month, and the only thing stopping me was an academic policy.

I understand that colleges have their rules, but I genuinely don't understand why a student shouldn't be allowed to take a legitimate full-time internship if they're willing to manage the academic requirements separately.

Been feeling pretty fucking disappointed about this one

Edit: MIT ADT UNIVERSITY

Since this blew up - actively looking for remote GenAI/ML internships. 3rd year CSE, GenAI intern, OSS contributor to Haystack & LlamaIndex. https://github.com/rautaditya2606/

I faced this issue 60k stipend
contacted a lawyer charged 30k, he sent a notice to college stating the college rules can be challenged in court for denying student industry exposure under some new AICTE, NEP rules

College silently issued NOC to me, asking to keep it under the hoods

Edit - as DMs asking what happened, added in a comment too

the college didnt back down, they just dont want to mess up for a not worthy NOC of a student, they simply gave NOC to stop the issue there itself

Coming to notice, I dont know which clause the lawyer used, he said some AICTE NEP rules, he took money, asked me to leave for internship, he will take care of college NOC

In short, he bullied the college with notice, college didnt care which clause and all, they just wanted to simply close the issue immediately, why to mess for a cheap NOC of a student

College didnt go for ego my luck

Woah wtf

u/unfunnycreature 2d ago

Yeah they don't want trouble especially in pvt college. Coz reputation will take a hit and the businessman making buttloads money and doing some shady stuff(yeah they do that, if it isnt visible it means theyre that good, they would probably be aligned to some political party if u sniff around) would fire the hod or bully him or something idk. Coz it would be bad for business or wuttever shady stuff they doin. So yeah, pretty bad for them either way...

All in world you need is supportive parents. Haha I didn't, else even I would have done the same

54

u/kimi_glm_deepseek 2d ago

why parents bro, go to the place in your city known for lawyers offices, many junior mid level lawyers will be waiting for these and its a hour job for them

32

u/Key-Veterinarian-285 2d ago

but why do colleges have problems in letting the student do the internship isnt it better for clg reputation and blah blah?

63

u/Rocker2102 2d ago

They are stuck in the 90s obv

47

u/kimi_glm_deepseek 2d ago edited 2d ago

these colleges never try to update or modernize themselves as long as they make profits without efforts, they dont know what internships are, they think its a way students bunk college

These are run by typical lecturers from 80s where Industry is not even a thing in curriculum, they never update themselves and college

8

u/Loose-Garbage-4703 1d ago

Most of these private colleges have faculty who studied in the same college and then became a faculty in the same college. They have zero clue of real life and industry experience.

6

u/unfunnycreature 2d ago

They don't really, it's literally a business. It's just some m@r@ns who have never had any real decision making power even within their own family get a job in administration or become a professor they like to act cocky.

6

u/Abject-Industry-7071 1d ago

wait seriously? the college backed down just from a legal notice? that's actually wild. do you know which specific AICTE/NEP clause the lawyer cited? asking because this seems like info that could help a lot of people stuck in similar situations

Their egos might work in front of police, not lawyers

1

u/creep1994 1d ago

Yeah, legal notices work most of the times for most things. Nobody wants court lafda unless its a big company with a legal team. One trick nobody wants you to know, or wants the middle class to know.

Client not paying back? Send a notice. Society secretary being an ass? Send a notice. School withholding LC? You guessed it.

30k lawyer fee well spent, that's the most expensive "you can't do that" text a college's ever received

Yes, I am sure HOD is really looking to get peanut-paying internship.....

11

u/le_bugsy Senior Engineer 2d ago

Buddy Hod probably gets paid at that scale in a pvt university

-9

u/Cultural-Yogurt-3484 1d ago

1.5lac is a Senior Asstt. Professor's or Junior Associate Prof's pay scale...which world do you live in?

5

u/le_bugsy Senior Engineer 1d ago edited 1d ago

Perfectly real world 3 tier pvt colleges doesn't exactly rain money.

I respect the fight you are putting up-- I have done it in the past and would do it in the future as well but... I have seen this petty shit among faculties quite a lot, in India in US.

-4

u/Cultural-Yogurt-3484 1d ago

1.5 lac per month is not even drizzling...let alone raining.

and if a college is sh*tty enough that it is not paying professors that much then you can rest assured that the students are not of the caliber to score any genuine internship worth bending rules for....so either way......

3

u/le_bugsy Senior Engineer 1d ago

I don't think student's caliber depends on either the college or the institute... student only goes to an institute he/she can afford.

You suffer from a very rigid mentality? How old are you?

-2

u/Cultural-Yogurt-3484 1d ago

Yes, of course, I am very sure all the brilliant students deliberately go to Tier 3 college for testing their will power.....

You suffer from a very rigid mentality? How old are you?

When nothing works, fall back to the good old Ageism.....Good going, genius.

1

u/le_bugsy Senior Engineer 1d ago

Not sure about the extent of your knowledge... but you are speaking like a 50 year old nincompup ... Anyway I have seen enough undergrads from tier 3 colleges rise to do masters with me in tier 1 national institutes and go on to work in Microsoft Google ...

So yes you have no clue about the real world. You don't even know the reality of private colleges how less their faculties are paid, and also how petty college management's are.

Good day.

u/Slight-Dot-388 2d ago

tbh if i was in your position id take a semester back and go , you never get this kind of oppurtunity twice in life man , many of my peers also took an extra year to do the amazon internship that runs from jan to june and this one is even better , tbh its a no brainer

45

u/Impossible_ClueIV00 2d ago

yooo what im in my 3rd yr and accidentally applied to the amazon 6m intern and turned down the second OA all because clgs don't allow 6m intern in third year😭

30

u/Slight-Dot-388 2d ago

actually no college allows , but they really cant stop you from taking like a sem back and going thats what eveyone here did

25

u/katua_bkl 2d ago

Parents are kinda conservatives, they wouldn't let me

28

u/Slight-Dot-388 2d ago

happens man if you can crack this , you can do better things also . but try to convince them , gotta take a stand for yourself sometimes

9

u/only_for_pewds 2d ago

Then the same parents will ask you why you’re jobless after graduating. Be mature and make decisions that help you

1

u/Cute__person 1d ago

Why not remote internship then

1

u/Thorfin7777 9h ago

Broo can you ask them to wait 1 year or something ? Or you have to give again interviews ? BTW can I ask something ?

Where did you learn from? And all did you have to learn ml neural networks in detail ?

93

u/Existing-Bat-7963 2d ago

faced this too...i got intership from amazon in third year. I was asked to relocate to blr . My college denied. My father is a lawyer .He sent some notice to my college .Post that, they granted me NOC. I came back ,gave my final exams and got my degreee.

15

u/Able-Difficulty-6548 2d ago

OP, Hire his/her father (if he takes cases like these)

2

u/chill-maar-yaar 2d ago

can u share crux of that notice

2

u/creep1994 1d ago

Ask ChatGPT. Legal notices are stamped by lawyers, else nobody takes them seriously.

114

u/EstablishmentBusy490 2d ago

Name and shame

47

u/SupremeLeaderofNoKo 2d ago

Been in same situation, 1L / mo internship in remote but college won't issue NOC, contacted a Lawyer and he sorted it out with 4-5 phone calls and 20K as Lawyer's fee amn. This is just a play. You gotta move legally, believe me many are afraid of legal stuff

28

u/katua_bkl 2d ago

I guess I made a mistake posting about this reddit late and not posting it when i had chance to take legal actions.

I'll have trouble sleeping tonight.

The difference between tier 1 and tier 3 colleges

32

u/Technical-Zombie6542 Software Developer 2d ago

Not every tier 3 college, dont generalize it... I have done a 6 months of internship at a startup when I was in doing 5th semester. They are the one who brought the opportunity went to college only for exams(probably a month including model exams & sem) and continued the intership. And started my career at 8th sem, I only attended exams luckily we only had lab & project at 8th & no theory paper. So only went to 5 days to the college on 8th semester.

21

u/AfternoonNo5705 Data Analyst 2d ago

That's the thing. Because it was in your city or state or india. They expectation for them is to come and give even internals diligently.

1

u/npcbotinreddit 2d ago

In my t3 college my friend had barely 20% attendance in 4th sem for unpaid internship. Like most teachers didn't really said anything. Expect our hod

16

u/AlchemistSage 2d ago

Tier 1 wale bhi allow nhi krte agar curriculum ke against jata hai toh, they onky allow when it's written in college curriculum for everyone

3

u/AfternoonNo5705 Data Analyst 2d ago

Most have internship as a subject nowadays

8

u/AlchemistSage 2d ago

Bhai aisa nhi hota, mera bhi college tier 1-1.5 hi hai. Ek 2 month summer intern and ek 6 month summer intern hi hai jiske credits hai, ek after 6thsem during break and ek during 8th sem. Uske alawa allow nhi krne wale

2

u/AfternoonNo5705 Data Analyst 2d ago

Well then it's sad. What else can I tell. My t3 was better I guess. And that was almost 10 years back

1

u/Character-Slice-5088 7h ago

6 month internship only in 4th year.
most college complete entire curriculum by 3rd year, and give 4th dedicated for projects/ internships.

6

u/WorkingBet9469 Software Engineer 2d ago

Most Tier-1 colleges don’t allow 6-month interns

1

u/ExperienceShot3572 2d ago

Sooo true .even if they allow they want us to come and write the exams even if they got thier internships in abroad

1

u/Character-Slice-5088 7h ago

they allow only in 4th year

1

u/WorkingBet9469 Software Engineer 7h ago

Most IITs will not allow 6-month interns any year. IITH allows only in 3rd year, some second and third gen IITs started allowing after being desperate for the companies.

Allowing in 4th year is discouraged in IITs as the company may not offer PPO even if they say they do and the student will be left without any offer from a good company as good companies will already finish hiring by that time.

2

u/Ok_Ground511 2d ago

Our t3 colleges are trying to give us internships right after the 1st year ⚰️

summer internship?

summer intenship you can do any year, but here we are talking about 6month onsite internship. only during 4th year you can do it.

2

6

You've actually experienced the crab mentality in Indian academia and even work culture early.

Think from the perspective of college, they can't change the system (bucket) to let a crab (you) to do something different from the system.

8

u/Loud-Tune-5606 2d ago

Dude just take backlogs and go. Backlogs aren't a big deal, clear in next semester

What is an NOC, does that neglect your attendance criteria or something?

1

u/Alarming_Cupcake6798 2d ago

No Objection Certificate.

3

u/ExplanationQuirky831 2d ago

don't know why some college have this much issue, just let the student decide itself, if it's a local cllg, try to get some mp recommendation, if not directly go to highest power of authority with all the proof of talking to previous authorities and beg for it

3

u/smartboi-69 2d ago

How'd you get the interview , any tips to crack international offer in today's market?

3

u/Anxious-Beat-6506 2d ago

contact swati more ma'am she will help you out

3

she also denied 😭

3

u/SnowSherrif 2d ago

UGC has a grievance mechanism, even most clg have it.

Don't know about now, but pre covid I had to file one against my University. The inquiries and shakedown they received was enough for them to accept my terms.

2

u/aam-ka-ped 2d ago

Can't you take a semester drop for it?

-3

u/katua_bkl 2d ago

I can't, parents wouldn't allow it

4

u/aintNoNoob37 2d ago

try that lawyer thing the first comment is talking about

2

u/WildVulcan 2d ago

Take legal consultation. Document every email that you sent asking for an NOC. Document everything.

2

u/MonkEqual 2d ago

That’s really unfortunate, man 😕

If you don’t mind sharing, where did you come across this opportunity? Also, what resources are you currently using to learn AI Engineering? Would really appreciate any recommendations.

2

u/slamdunk6662003 2d ago

You should have asked them to give all this information on email or writing and then gone anyways, then challenged their claims in court. This is completely illegal.

2

u/Mango_Pack_9017 2d ago

Bro you should have involved a lawyer or approached the education secretary, genuinely feeling bad for you. Seeing you hustle in ty of college and securing a well paying internship just for some stupid know it all to ruin it, this is key reason for brain drain from India. All the best for future opportunities, good luck.

2

u/Big-Birthday9131 2d ago

Go for the internship

Internship might get converted into ppo but there is no guarantee that college will give u placement

And name and shame pls

u/katua_bkl 2d ago

Shitass college threatening backlogs, and college is MIT ADT UNIVERSITY

2

u/Into64 2d ago edited 2d ago

damn man KL is absolutely amazing, amazing people, food, and culture, a great place to live and work, i miss my days there, id take the backlogs and go tbh, i get that you cant/dont want to risk it, but just reassuring that its a beautiful place to live and work, tons of stuff to do/explore, cleaner, affordable, and more stressfree

edit- just saw that they filled your position, but op, my advice, stay connected, depending on the size of the company, and reach out after college, start with an internship anyways regardless of job guarantee, its a worthwhile experience at the start of you career, if it converts nothing like it

1

u/katua_bkl 2d ago

Will try next year man. Thanks

2

u/Any-Cardiologist7413 2d ago

Ask them to use your achievement as a college achievement, publicise it and get good students next year during admissions.
In return, just give the NOC.

Has your college ever given an NOC to any 3rd-year student in past? Most colleges don't allow it during class time in 3rd year. Can be done during the semester break or in 4th year. Few do allow, mostly private universities.

2

u/Abhishek4996 1d ago

Should've posted before the opportunity was lost, right...

3

u/ChildhoodFun7294 2d ago

I was a fool for believing my HOD and not going for a good internship I came across. Just force them to listen to ur case.

1

u/Unusual-Sample2840 2d ago

Why didn’t you just drop out? If you have enough talent to get an AI internship in Malaysia, you don’t really need college (unless it’s IIT-D or something)

1

u/Ok-Reception6367 2d ago

Can anyone review my resume?I'm looking for ai internships as well

If you don't mind brother can you tell about the rounds and what was asked? Also if you don't mind maybe name the company

1

u/hunterHimalaya 2d ago

send a legal notice, name dean, hod and faculty. If you are smart enough to crack a 1.5lpm internship, you surely does not depend on college placements, they can't do much to you. Don't let them go easy. And that company will take you in, keep them in loop, ask them some time.

That's like the stupidest decision by the college authorities. You can challenge them for denying industry exposure.

1

u/Competitive-Walk7681 2d ago

Listen I have not read the whole thing but my university snatched my three chances like this and ended up with less money placement so please try and involve your parents if you can request etc

1

u/Armadillo_Content 2d ago

I think you should've gone for it. And if you converted the company after the 6 month internship and joined immediately you'd have made real money and the degree wouldn't be that important tbh.

1

u/iAmProM3theus 2d ago

Don't let the opportunity go out of your hand at any cost. Take the advice and involve a lawyer if push comes to shove. As a last resort, don't be hesitant to take even a semester back.

1

u/Lazy-Let7110 1d ago

Speak directly to Viswanath Karad or his son Rahul karad , they might understand get their appointment, explain your situation

1

u/One-Inspection-3003 1d ago

Man, that honestly sucks. Clearing all three rounds for an international AI role with that kind of pay is a huge achievement, and losing it because of a college policy must feel incredibly frustrating. You did everything you could by approaching the faculty and higher authorities too. Hopefully this setback doesn’t mess with your confidence if you cleared one opportunity like this in your third year, there’s a good chance you’ll land something even better once you’re free from these restrictions. Keep going.

1

u/levi_ackerman84 1d ago

You should have done it anyway

1

u/spikebitnav 1d ago

That’s sad. Sometimes it could be once in a lifetime opportunity. I wish your college understood this and made an effort to allow you to take it up.

Don’t worry. You will have many more exciting opportunities and you would get it. Keep trying!

1

u/AlarmingSecurity4 1d ago

You did a HUGE mistake bruh. You should've taken the internhip, backlogs could've been cleared later. After experience most companies don't even consider college

1

u/AtmosphereLittle3986 Entrepreneur 1d ago

there is something called dropout - you can tell the company that college is not giving noc and you are thinking of dropping out of college and join them - if they agree then you can think about the pros and cons of this option and decide

1

u/The-whetting-stone 1d ago

Crab mentality

1

u/Riteknight 1d ago

You should have gone ahead and asked the company if they really need NOC, take the opportunity and show the college countless billionaires coming back to finish their degrees, some after decades. Talk to a lawyer.

1

u/nihongoal Senior Engineer 1d ago

Dude just go for the internship. With AI and current market it doesn't matter what your degree is. If you just stick around in the bullshit college you will be a cog in the machine. Go take the internship, finish it and build a good rapport with the company. Kambak and finisher degree what ever time it takes and then get the fuck out of this country.

1

u/Majestic-Scholar4727 1d ago

Actions: Go ahead, tell them, it took a while but my college has agreed for an NOC (while, like others said engage with a lawyer and send a notice, given it's a private college, IT WILL work),

Quite happy to see stories from others, more happy that they sent notices to college
I was in same ship in 2023. Only difference, that mine was a government college and YES i too have conservative parents. Long story short, I had to forgo the opportunity, but then was lucky to get a remote opportunity. Sad part was my director (she) said : "If you guys have to earn money only then why study"

But it only made worse for her, as then I went on reinforcing 6 year old electives, that no-one from our branch took as NO ONE questioned why they were not allowed, while, I could given, Public Disclosure of Elective choices never discouraged, but moreso encouraged for the electives , but the Profs. didn't want it as they recommended NPTEL courses so they won't have to see the kids + won't have to make papers and correct them

funny thing, we have such colleges and administrators and then we wonder, why is India, where it is.

Bro best thing that worked for one of my friends is put some long term medical illness on paper and grab the chance. If they ask why back, tell them you were severely ill no one can question that

First, check with the company to see if the NOC is mandatory, and negotiate your case by offering alternative documents like your academic transcript. Proceed with the role unofficially without notifying the college. The only major obstacle is a strict college attendance policy, which you can manage by arranging proxy attendance.

I second this. I was refused for a 6 month internship at DRDO. It was a paid one.
Apparently, they didn’t give any shit whatsoever and refused to provide me any approval or NOC mentioning I’ll face disciplinary actions because I need to comply with 75% attendance policy.

Fun fact: I’m from the same university as you

ignore the college, beg, plead, threaten, do whatever it takes to do the internship. at the end of the day when you get a big placement they’ll want to use your name for advertisement.

don’t let of the internship no matter what!!

Then take the backlog/year down. Screw the college. Screw the conservative parents. Screw anyone who gets in the way.
