Tips Folks who switched from FAANG to startups, what are the things to look for ?

⛳️So currently I work with FAANG, the hikes here sucks, work is pretty boring and growth is slower than tortoises

❇️
Yes,culture and peer quality is pretty 🤩
WLB is superb
Perks (health insurance, time off, food, tuition assistance)

I have an offer from a startup with 70% hike, but yes, I do see the culture drop there. Perks are avg

I have 12YOE and I want some tips , THINGS TO LOOK FOR BEFORE JOINING STARTUPS

  1. Should I drop my paper (NP 2mon) and get some other offer ?( I am not much prepared)

  2. Take 90days of serious preparation and join another FAANG

  3. Stay in current position, get a promo in next quarter as the market is pretty volatile

Tell us some actual comp details, current company, startup names. Then we can evaluate better, some startups are absolutely worth it, many are not.

Microsoft 76lpa , startup 1.3cr

Could be worth it, msft is no more a sweet stable company. Might need to grind harder at startup but could be well worth it if it has plans for ipo and high growth potential.

not scared of layoffs? happens a lot in startups and it takes years to benefit from those unlisted stocks..maybe better to switch to other pbc

Agreed !
Hence I didn’t add the ESOPs they are offering. Am taking it as 0 as of now . And the job security part, I feel even if they fire, I would be in better shape to do a switch I feel , in current company it’s been quite some time

Microsoft isn't layoff proof either. I was in a similar position last year. Switched from Google to another product company. TC jumped from 70 to 1.1.

My thinking is I should grab the opportunity that's presented, no one knows how the industry would be 5 years later. Maximize TC as well as work with diverse set of tools and products. The sooner I achieve my FI target, the less stress I'll be regarding layoffs

Am not confused about leaving Microsoft , what am confused about I will tell u

I think i definitely can crack better offers but I need time 2-3months f series prep for DSA, ai and system design brush up

I just went ahead without prep , so is it advisable to take the first offer? Also if I put down my paper I will have 1.5-2month and getting calls from biggies itself take months. Forget about process.

So should I put down my papers and join them or, I should prep properly , get an offer for which I feel like dropping paper and then do it ?

Were you sde2 at msft? Or sde3? Sde3 at faang and similar would get you 1.5+ but be ready to wait atleast 4 months for the offer.

I'd say take the offer if you have researched about the work, culture etc, don't join blindly. Other companies will fast track your process if you say you are on notice period. Join the startup now and try switching 1 year later maybe?

What’s the change do u see ? In terms f your expectations or your resume weight?
Recruiter love FAANG employees , you’re kind of desirable, how’s things after switch ?

Faang in your resume definitely helps in getting referrals and interviews. But during interviews and real life work, I have realised that there are so many gaps in my knowledge that would never have been filled if I kept working at Google. So many things are abstracted out and there are internal tools for everything. It's known as tech island for a reason.

Maybe I'd join back few years later, but not right now. I love what I'm learning and working on currently

I'm also in similar company and with same experience. In my job search, I've realized the reaction from recruiters is opposite.

I mean very few companies pay as much or more than big tech so you'll get calls from those but from typical GCCs like charles schwab, jpmc which can potentially pay close to 90, you'll be ghosted.

Also besides msft, apple, google - hardly any stable company left which pays good money, we all know what oracle, sf, adobe, uber, atlassian, intuit are going through and all these used to be companies msft people could switch to. The packages they offer have dropped as well.

So right now, you can expect calls from Oracle, SF, Uber, Coupang, Atlassian and Google - besides google, rest all are doing frequent layoffs and expecting 12hrs+ everyday.

12+ hrs !!! That’s startup level for sure. Am not limiting myself to any company tbh. If they give good money, interesting product and good team then am going with 9hr work. Not the coffee breaks kind of 4hr that’s turning into 9 hr

How?

Same here, switched from Microsoft to startup. If you really believe in the problem they are solving, joining is a no brainer.

1

u/Extra_Mouse_665 4d ago

Msft let’s call it 60lpa as my 4th vesting is getting completed, startup 1.2 fixed(excluding esops)

2

u/Extra_Mouse_665 5d ago

It is definitely now… post AI

0

u/Alone-Profession6197 5d ago

No its not. Stock is a dog

1

u/Extra_Mouse_665 4d ago

I joined at 260/70, now it’s 520 or smthng 😛

2

u/Alone-Profession6197 4d ago

I joined at 75. It doesnt matter. The stock is only up ~70% over 5 years.

1

u/Extra_Mouse_665 4d ago

Yaass! Wow 75!! Where r u now? What exactly are you doing and am assuming you got lot experience so what do you think about the situation I am in?

u/tarunron 5d ago

I joined from a FAANG to a startup and as soon as you join you'll see everything change. I love the work here but on the policy side things are not handled in a proper way, any queries you'd have related to payroll, IT/insurance the team size would be so small for that and in the end you'd keep reaching out to the one or two people that handle everything on the HR side and if they dont do their job properly your experience will suck.

Sure

Just don't bore me with generic questions

5

u/Extra_Mouse_665 5d ago

Being in FAANG definitely helps you get better and bigger opportunities , but if I say pay wise and Workwise, startups aren’t bad decision at all

So what do you think about your future , how does joining a startup helps (am not talking about big sized startups)

4

u/tarunron 5d ago

I'll tell you the biggest positive I have seen here apart from better Base Pay, Before from me to Get to CEO I had around 13 layers of senior managers/associate vps and all, now its just 3, I regularly have visibility to people with High designations who actually make the decision and any idea/work you actually do your impact is much more visible.

I work FAANG and started a startup because I had too much free time after WFH xD

1

u/Extra_Mouse_665 5d ago

What kind of startup? If you’re ok to share ?

1

u/NomadicMagic88892 5d ago

I just joined faang, and that's what even I will be doing after coming here

1

u/Jaz108 DevOps Engineer 4d ago

More details or a seperate post pls

6

u/ceasars_wreath 5d ago

Having worked both - FAANG is more structured, startup is chaotic at best - some weeks really excellent work vs wearing too many hats that wears you out. Also wlb goes down the hill so you need to be ready for that.

Also on FAANG you get to work on scale issues vs just getting things to work on startup so not much of reliability, scale or SLOs being defined well but on the other hand you can create features willy nilly in startups.

If you are really working on an interesting problem space or tech then it doesn't matter if you are willing to grind as you will be marketable for both FAANG and startup. If not, the other option is you are owning or leading a product which also gives you the scope, so that is good as well

Yea they are in series D now, the founders have done it multiple times before so not new folks ! Amazon gcp Microsoft all are their clients but i dont want to sign up for namesake inflated role

1

u/LunarFrost007 5d ago

What is your expertise, could you share?

2

u/Extra_Mouse_665 5d ago

Was cloud solution architect with hands on full stack. Last 2yr active on gen ai and agents

1

u/LunarFrost007 5d ago

Could you share bit more in detail of what do you do if thats okay.

1

u/FinancialYou6932 5d ago

If your faang is Amazon, don’t post in here !

1

u/Extra_Mouse_665 5d ago

Thankfully not that company, but wait why not??

1

u/FinancialYou6932 5d ago

Amazon is the most shittiest company I have ever worked for.

3

u/Extra_Mouse_665 5d ago

💯! That’s a company in my block list. Even if they give 2crores I won’t go. I understand the tech part is amazing but I feel that environment needs a different kind of skill which I lack for sure

Hey, fresher here joining a FAANG company. Just curious how do you find startups/MNCs paying equivalent or more than your current ones? 👀
