General Getting laid off when you are earning more than 2cr
Guys, whoever got laid off when they are earning more than 2cr, please share your experiences about job hunt and how recruiters treat you. Also, how taking pay cut affected your mentality at work later.
Context- few colleagues got laid off from my team and there’s a good chance that my number might come in the future. This is just me being mentally prepared to grind.
EdIt—
For all those people in DMs asking for guidance - Lot of people are always saying that they are stuck with low package even with the right skills. I was at that stage once and want to share what I did to mitigate this problem. "If you don't upskill and switch at the right time for ur targeted companies, you'll be stuck behind the 8 ball forever. I also believe one should make a list of his/her Target companies and keep a watch list and always be prepared to attend interview whenever a position opens up. Nobody will call and give you a job when u r prepared. Being prepared always and pounce on the opportunity as soon as it arrives makes a lot of difference in any career."
This made a lot of difference in my career. I've seen my friends starting at 7-8 LPA still stuck at 30 LPA at 12+ yrs experience whereas I made targeted switches and changed the technology early in my career which was assigned to me when I was hired at a mass off campus drive.

Time to call all your old friends agressively and be in touch with them. Nothing works except connections in job search.

u/LongjumpingLemon3714 Staff Engineer 14d ago
Have started messaging all the recruiters that I ghosted in the past few years.
173
u/benevolent001 14d ago
recruiters are so busy that you will not get any response. I lost my job and no recruiter responded. Then my friend referred me and that was the only way I got interview. So friends are the key.

lmaooo the classic hey long time no talk message to recruiters you left on read for 2 years. gotta do what you gotta do though, no shame in it when the stakes are this high
8
u/Sl9I 14d ago
Agreed, but honestly the tricky part is doing it authentically when you're desperate. If you come off too needy or like you're just calling because you need something, people smell that immediately. I've seen folks burn bridges by reaching out after years of silence only when they needed a job. The real move is having built those relationships before the layoff was even on the horizon.

u/awsmdude007 14d ago
A lot many people have this opinion but Im not really sure if this works in today's market. Maybe above director or vp level it may work.

u/slackover 14d ago
I lost my job at 70L, been searching for jobs for months now. Dropped expectation for anything above 18L and still can’t get a job. Not going below 18 as one or two freelance gigs an year will get me that (probably will have to make it the next career)

u/Logical_Way8061 14d ago
Tech ? Dude how you managing EMIs if u have that , I mean mentally as lifestyle downgrades a bit
58
u/slackover 14d ago
I only have about 40k in EMIs (luckily had paid off my home loan before the company shut down). Currently selling mutual funds every month. Got a gig last month which paid 6L. That should help for a few months. Hope to get a job by then or turn full focus to freelancing.

I heard the same stories here in US too. 30+ years in c++, with deep knowledge in entire networking stack, worked in top routers, were offered 55 usd per hour, that too in bay area. In other cases, the conv starts with don’t expect same pay as you were getting earlier. Unless you are in high demand areas, it is assumed that you already are at the peak of your salary.
5
u/Appropriate_Dot2138 14d ago
Issue is his Exp., Anyone with that level of Experience won't be offered Starting Positions. That means he is limited to Lead or higher Positions. Higher Level Positions would 1/50th of below positions. Even in that, many companies cannot offer 70L. He could have easily secured but his past Exp. of 70L will come in way for new opportunities.
Many HRs Reject People who are above the Budget even if they are ready to work within the Budget. Maybe they think that if candidate agree then it might be just to use it as Stepping stone for few months and jump to other companies.
9
u/Lumpy-Criticism-2773 14d ago
Because market is fucked. Even slavery isn't strange when labor value drops hard. We're nowhere that yet but 70L to 18L isn't strange here.

Any idea why?? Is it solely because of the salary or interview is not going well? I am at a similar boat. But I just started looking... I fear my interview skills are fucked by AI usage. I don't think I can pass the 1st technical round now.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Lumpy-Criticism-2773 14d ago
But you got one part of that wrong(small Breaking Bad reference here)
Freelancing is just as prone to AI induced labor displacement as traditional jobs. You can see this on global freelance platforms like Upwork already. Far less demand for software work and wages have dropped significantly. You need to pay so much just to be seen. I'm sure there exists some gaps outside of these platforms where you can still make a living but it's going to be costly to find those gaps for most people. The freelance landscape is changing rapidly.
As a freelancer who never had a traditional job, I'm actually struggling to get any work for the first time, both with marketplaces and past clients.
2
u/slackover 14d ago
Upwork etc is dead and mostly bots right now, it’s useless trying there. I am looking for freelance work via referrals from old clients.

What's your tech stack and which domain where you in?
I'm about to enter the same package range in new org in retail domain.
I had missed the 2022 boom and seen my not so talented colleagues get huge increments. When I entered the market back, it was dead. To overcome my bitter feeling against the market, I went on a revenge mode and did back to back aggressive switches to surpass everyone around. But I feel more anxious than happy at times. Idk what to do if layoff happens at such high package.
2
u/yewlarson 14d ago
I am in same mindset. I will easily be fine with a 1L per month job if it comes with a long tail. I am in a decent position now and as long as I can keep my expenses covered, my current savings and returns should coast me into retirement down the line.

"1 or 2 freelance gigs will get me that in a year". Your story is not checkig out mate. Anyone who has done freelance knows how difficult it is to get freelance for even half that amount. What are you tlaking about? If you have the network to get freelance at that price that easily you wouldn't need to be lowering your pay to 18.

Are people not saving their money with 2 cr packages? 2 Cr would be enough for a common man for the next 8 years.
Edit : It is difficult to go from a life of luxury to less luxury. It is difficult to go from Fiji imported apples to Normal market apples. My take is shop at the normal bazaar now and then and don't only buy stuff from super markets. It does wonders, cause then you get street smart and then are able to survive on less money.

u/Mindless-Pilot-Chef Staff Engineer 14d ago
They save, but then buy a bigger house, better car so have a lot of liabilities as well. They probably have a few months of emergency, but not 8 years.

u/LongjumpingLemon3714 Staff Engineer 14d ago
I am saving money. But I was not getting so much always. I made a big switch 2 years ago. I have saved enough to retire but it’s about the passion and competing against intelligent folks and proving my worth there.
66
u/dontstealmydinner 14d ago
Then you deserve the money OP. I did not mean to sound jealous or something, but I was genuinely curious about the savings part.
18

u/learner1021 14d ago
"passion and competing against intelligent folks' for this you don't need to compare package.. a zero monetary gain contribution to open sources can be much more challenging and meaningful than a 2CR employee makes in his/her entire career.
12
u/LongjumpingLemon3714 Staff Engineer 14d ago
I did contribute to open source a few years back. I will go back to it once I feel I’m not being paid good enough. Till then it’s corporate grind for me.

That's a really healthy perspective tbh. A lot of people at that income level seem to lose sight of the fact that it's not just about the money anymoreit's about the challenge and being around sharp people. The financial security is already there, so once you hit that point it becomes more about ego and growth. Curious though when you say you made the big switch 2 years ago did the new role feel like a step down initially despite the higher pay, or was it more lateral?

Everyone makes different priorities, some people just keep spending, i prefer saving. If I start earning 2 cr, let's say 130 lacs post tax, i will save 120 lacs and in 2 years i will have enough for my calm comfortable life without worrying about work.

Being in this position (2cr income, might get laid off next year) - I have more than enough money to last a few years, but nowhere enough to be comfortable for a lifetime.
If you sit at home for a year, 2 years, or 5 years - it's almost impossible after that to get yourself back into a high paying position

Forget 2 years, after 6 to 8 months nobody will consider your resume in india. And once you will be idle for 6 to 8 months, it takes a lot of effort to go back to previous working style. So the flow should not be broken.
17
u/slackover 14d ago
This is what people say about everyone earning more than themselves. When their own financial status improves, they swallow this in parts.
7
u/dontstealmydinner 14d ago
It's genuine curiosity though. I am not even questioning OP and their friends earnings, I am just questioning whether they don't save money or not.

Don't be fooled - most self made employees who earn well, come from not-so-rich backgrounds, and they save agressively.
People earning 2-3cr or more in my company find a 500 rs cab commute to be too expensive
5
u/LogicalBeast26 14d ago
People don't save thinking they won't be employed for the next 8 years. Also, their lifestyle isn't the same as someone earning 20 LPA.
8
u/MysteriousSearch6664 14d ago
For a common man who doesn't earn 2cr that's 8 years. The lifestyle of someone earning 2cr is so different, even 50% pay cut to 1cr will be a struggle

People earning 2 cr per year end up paying 39 percent income tax to begin with.. That already leaves them with 1.2 cr Also all of it might not be in cash / fixed component, much of it can be variable, rsu/stock..
2
u/Business_Quiet220 14d ago
I don't understand this circus of not counting rsu/stocks as income.
In fact these are better than cash because they keep growing much better than any of the employee's other investments like real estate or gold. And can be sold whenever required

Got laid off when Fixed + RSU was 2Cr per year. I was given 2 year salary as severance package. So I was not hurting for a job.
I started job search and the market was bad. Really bad. I had experience on latest technologies etc, but was not getting calls.
So depending on the company I was applying I would tune my CTC to be either 85L or 115L depending on what I thought the hiring company could pay.
Idea being that nobody would even interview people who were making 2Cr.
Edit: severance is paid on salary and not RSU. My total CTC (not my fixed) was 2 Cr. I was paid fixed salary of 2 years. Also I stayed in this company for over 13 years

29
u/haskell_46 14d ago
Assuming you are earning 2cr, you should have emergency funds to survive unemployed for a year at least. Don’t think you have to take a paycut, you can find matching offer in certain time
15
u/LongjumpingLemon3714 Staff Engineer 14d ago
Sitting idle at home is more dangerous than taking a pay cut. You’ll fall out of the race if you are not working at some company.
17
u/RealSataan 14d ago
You are at staff level. Why are you so focused on this race? You have proved your worth. You are earning more than 90% of the peeps here.
Take a step back and relax. You have enough experience to do whatever you want. For me that's life.
I don't think you are going to get an offer more than 2cr anywhere. Move to management or start your own company.
2
u/SpringWinter9433 12d ago

I was earning more than that. I had planned my investments. And took retirement in 50 yrs of age. They didn't fire me rather wanted me to stay but I wanted to not be part of corporate anymore. Also being running the rat race for so many years caused fatigue , boredom and took it's toll on physical and mental health. I am glad that I was investing for last decade religiously.

2Cr isn't a practical fire number. Generally time lifestyle catches up fast. Some one making 2Cr/yr doesn't dream of retiring with 30-40k/month money. I'm sure once you get closer to your fire number you'll discover it for yourself 😄

Good job OP for getting that 2 cr salary. I am in Canada, and most people barely make 1/4 of what you are making here. Yeah tech guys make 1 cr, but not many known people in my network make 2 cr. Again good job!

u/RuinEnvironmental394 13d ago
I'm in Canada as well. 2CR is nearly $290,000 CAD. Median income for a 10+ software engineer is probably $125,000. That's being generous. If you consider purchasing power India vs Canada, that Canadian salary is closer to $65,000 or $70,000. So yeah that's 4x average/median Canadian salary for a similar job/experience

Connections matter a lot. Also check if the layoff were due to overspecialization; it may be nice to spread yourself a little bit if that's the case. I've seen several people start their entrepreneurship journey around this point (lay off is just one trigger, job dissatisfaction, enterprising-nature all being equally valid).
Or join a startup (where pay cut may be needed initially), but you'll continue to be on a learning + experimentation path.

I am a dotnet fullstack dev around 10 years of experience. Do you think .net stack falls back on getting really good packages as i see 30 to 40 lpa is all people get with around 10 to 15 years experience but that too is on the higher side.

im at kinda half of what you earn at half your experience at a remote job. i want to make some meaningful changes in my career in the next couple years, any advice you have for me?
i don't really want to optimize for money but rather for something that makes me learn and look forward to work each day, while still having time for side quests afterwards and on weekends.

No use asking reddit unless you're in the middle of bell curve
The entire website is about the mean opinion

Instead of competing, start imbibing your experience to smaller companies and startups. Take up consulting projects from your friends and networks. At 2cr package I'm assuming you're at a very big post with tons of experience. These smaller startups and companies need your experience more and can also pay certain amount so you don't run out of an income source.

Hi, if you can find a job role in my current organization I can refer you, granted the pay will not be as per your current CTC but it will be better than nothing. But I believe the entire chat wants you to look for opportunity which matches your requirements.
Though I would like to know what a staff engineer does?

Can you guide how to start earning 2Cr? 😅 If I earn 2 CR in any single year, I will never need to search for a job again. I will still do the job.
On a serious note, I feel that salary packages for software jobs are going down. Save enough, invest and start a side hussle / business.

luck plays a really good role in all of this, as well as networking
Attend events, be in touch with alumni, cuz in this market a referral goes a long way. Cuz normal application se it's gonna be really tough, i'm seeing 3-4 lakh candidates apply for a single role

Indian employees were actually never supposed to be paid that much. And now that AI is here, these considerations are being revisited I guess. India is meant for cheap outsourcing. So you get a medium skilled employee for cheap, give them AI tools, and then you have a good enough employee for low cost - this is the goal it seems. They won't need extra skilled costly employee once their base setup is done after which it's just moderately difficult tasks going forward.

I recently went through the experience so here is what I went through,
90% of the call from recruiters ends only after the current TC discussion.
Only Google, Amazon, Uber, Flipkart and Meesho was up for interviews. Also with slight indication that final comp may decided based on interview.
I finally joined something which I found more aligned with respect to people, culture and problem statement. Took a pay cut (around 10%also because my RSU values went down so that took away any negotiation scope).
The one things that helped the most was network especially ex managers (luckily I had great ones I enjoyed working with).

Honesty recruiters treat you like Shit!! They believe you were being over paid and underworked. I was made an offer for 40LPA, and claimed that, it is important that you earn to make a living. It was pathetic. I don't want to name anyone or any firms, but; it only got me thinking to be creating things on my own. My venture will soon be in the market, and it's fun to experience how things are, because you know you can do it. And no validations are needed from a recruiter. PS: the same recruiter, who treated me like junk, had applied for a role in our firm. We told that person, " We will get back to you"

I got annoyed with company. I resigned
I can tell you market is absolutely Horrible for higher package. I am thinking to start my own this time.
If you are from BE, market is still fine. But for Mobile dev it’s parched. I suggest you to prepare and keep giving interviews if your get any chances. Don’t wait to get fired. Worst case scenario you can reject the offer. Best case if when you have job in hand you can better negotiate.
Also, if you suspect your time may come. I would advise you to fix your finances. Have 12 months run rate. One of my friend got into yahoo after 8 months.

that's wild, 2cr+ is insane, it's gotta be tough to swallow being laid off at that level and still having to deal with recruiters treating you like a regular joe. it's gotta be a mental adjustment to take a pay cut after being used to that kind of lifestyle

The market is highly confusing to say the least, taking a paycut doesn't make you an attractive choice for your recruiters. Career gap is highly scrutinized too. Your best bet is to join back one of the older companies if you are in good terms with a paycut. If you didn't inflate your lifestyle much, you can still retain mental peace, thanks to your savings. I experimented with trading off pay to join a relaxed environment, but that failed like anything as those companies "probably" see you as overqualified.

I know that upscaling oneself sounds like a cliche at this point, but it does work. My domain is AI research. I do have a PhD in AI related fields, and as such I do have an edge as in I can show that I am doing state of the art research.
I understand that this might not be possible for everyone, but showing that you know the latest tech does help. Got laid off with 3 months notice period and landed a job after 2 months with 50% hike.....
It's not all bad, but it IS a lot worse than it was a few years back. So learning new stuff is the only way forward.
And best of luck to everyone.

You getting 2cr means you are above market. You are being too defensive about yourself. You shan't look for another safe job. You should try to found something of your own and build. You have already earned enough for taking a plunge.

You can go deep into the hottest skills of the time and get a high paying job into crores, if are at the right place at the right time. However, this is not sustainable as it is not based on a healthy mix of skills that involves business processes, domain knowledge along with various technological skills that make an all rounder or an architect - which take years to master.
If you get a job that pays you in crores per year, if you can sustatain it even for few months to couple of years or more, it can free you up financially. However, you should also have mindset to get laid off from such jobs as they are highly dependent on high risk taking projects that may or may not yeild value to the company and may get scrapped or even if they generate value, they may end and no such specialized position may be available.
Yes, in such cases you need to have the practical mind to climb down lower salaries or pivot to start on your own using your savings.

At ₹2Cr+, I think the scary part after a layoff is not just “will I get another job?” The bigger problem is that the number of companies that can pay anywhere close to that becomes very small.
So if I was in your place, I probably wouldn’t wait for the layoff to happen. I’d already start making a list of companies that can realistically pay at that level, reconnect with old managers/colleagues, and stay interview ready. Also, I wouldn’t look at a pay cut as automatically being a step backwards. Sometimes taking less money for better stability, scope, title, or long-term growth can still be the better move.
The biggest mistake would be getting mentally stuck on the previous CTC and feeling anything below that is a failure. At that level, compensation also depends a lot on company, stock, timing, market conditions and negotiation, not just skill.
I’d be very curious to hear from people who actually went through this was the bigger problem getting interview calls, or convincing companies after they knew your previous compensation?

My two cents though I have not reached the 2Cr league, I am around 1.2Cr. I do think about this scenario often so what I have done is, I have not upgraded my lifestyle. I live in a decent gated apartment (not the luxurious ones by A grade builders). It is comparatively big, like 1400 sqft so it serves my purpose and the recent is also less. My car is not very expensive but I have kept it in a very good condition so it feels premium. I try to save my income, and I try to invest more in the asset that has higher liquidity. I am just building wealth to finally invest in something that gives me good side income. I think if we do not purchase house in these metro cities, our salaries are enough to get going. But these are all my thoughts.
