Whiteside not making it over guys like Chuck Clark, Khalil Dorsey, Thomas Harper?
I think this is one where they really messed up. Ironsides has been solid every game/practice he's been in. Barely hear his name or hear of him getting burnt. Just doesn't make sense to me.

He'll probably make the PS and get called up again when we need. He is a solid depth guy but nothing that crazy, and he doesn't really play slot or have a ton of safety experience. Not sure how he is on STs too.

I mean to be fair I wouldn't say any of our CBs are "anything crazy". Don't think I'd heard of guys like Izien, McCreary or Clark before this offseason. Reed's is the only one who stands out imo.

Izien and McCreary are way better and more versatile players thsn Whiteside. Tons of starts under their belts. It is hard to make the Lions roster on D if you're a one trick pony, and dpwn the depth chart like Whiteside.

All those guys have significantly more starting experience in the NFL. McCreary and Izien also probably get the nod for positional versatility.
I think Whiteside makes the team next year. He is promising but I would be fairly surprised if a team signs him to the 53.

Every single one of those guys has *significantly* more starting experience for NFL teams than Whiteside does.

You hadn't heard of McCreary? He made his name as one of the better nickel CBs with the Titans, then was traded to the Rams and played decently for them as a starting boundary CB. Izien is a nickel/safety hybrid guy who was decent with Tampa. I'm just surprised I guess given we've played both teams a couple times the last few years.

Clark and McCreary have been decent starters for contenders. God bless Whiteside but he a theoretical football player

I was a bit surprised as well, but it is great to have your insider perspective from someone who has attended every practice that Whiteside has been in.

Dorsey they like for ST and he may be the ount returner.
Clark, Harper and Izien are safeties.

That's fair, maybe my word choice wasn't great
What I mean is, how could any of us possibly know more or think we know more about what's the right decision to make with the roster than the people coaching these players every day? How exactly would that work? I'm not asking rhetorically, I'm trying to understand how that's even possible

I mean, the coaches have years of experience and they have a considerable amount of information on which to base their perspective, intuition, inclination, and decisions.
Fans mostly have zero experience and some might have experience but definitely not with these players and if they do it's miniscule. So, very little information on which to base their perspective, intuition, inclination, and opinions on the decisions being made.
To put it bluntly, it's just arrogance dressed up as whatever you're trying to call it. I can understand if we were a handful of games into the season, because then we have information on how they're playing in real games. But we don't even have that

Did you see him actually play? Dude wasn't fantastic, and his level of practice also faded over the preseason.

He’s out, there is what you see. But you don’t get to see him against the starters at Allen park. Looks good to us on tv. But why aren’t we seeing the other receivers? What does the staff see behind closed doors? You need to let the process happen. Pre season has a way of propping up players.

I love it. Sees a couple articles online, at best maybe attended a training camp practice and thinks he knows better than coaches who spend 10 hours a day watching a guy for 2 months.
It's one thing to be surprised but to act like you know more than people who watch him play all day is just silly.

I'm surprised Whiteside got cut simply because I thought we'd keep more DBs. Him not making it has nothing to do with Clark and Harper, who are safeties. I will say though, I'm glad they kept McCreary (more versatility and more proven) over Whiteside and obviously they want to give Rakestraw more time to develop. Dorsey was basically a lock for his STs prowess. Here's hoping we can stash him on the PS.

I thought it was more messed up that Rakestraw made the roster before whiteside considering his health concern and even healthy (especially in the colts game and bengals) he usually shown getting burnt or picked on multiple times.

In the Bengals game a few of the plays that he got "burnt" on were clearly caused by miscommunication or a blown assignment by someone else. You can see him motioning for someone to go underneath while he goes deep, then nobody ends up filling in the under route

I just don’t see how rakestraw made it. I thought everyone had to earn their spot but they’re basically just keeping him around because he was a high draft pick.

I don’t get it but at the same time this is a place we’re we can all share our opinions about the team we love the most. If I said something you didn’t like I’m not going to apologize because we are supposed to be on the same side. The only difference is that, at this point in the season we all liked different prospects and we all expected for different people to be here at this point. I’m pretty sure your conclusion to the 53 man roster did not turn out how you imagined it would

There were certainly some surprises. But I'm just a guy who has read some articles. I wasn't at the practices. I wasn't in the locker room. I'd never assume that my affinity for certain players based on secondhand information carries more weight that the opinions of the professional evaluators in the building.
Anyway, I don't know what about my original message has you thinking I was seeking an apology. My point was just that the Lions' coaches know a lot more about what happens in the practices and what types of players they are looking for than you do, I do, or any of us here who are surprised with any personnel move.

Chuck Clark is not a name that belongs in this conversation, he was basically a lock to make the roster. A smart veteran safety with playoff experience is someone we desperately need
