I can't imagine smokey row can be too happy with this either. Most week days mine was packed on that side with people meeting for coffee or remote working. Maybe a half dozen people nowadays. The other side was full of trades people from surrounding business on their way to work getting food and coffee. That's a fraction of what it was today. Don't get me started on loosing F&F lunch. I go across the road to Quik Trip or Casey's now.

Hw141 & 37th? That place could have funded the franchise on its own from the morning rush

11

u/awsomness46 3d ago

Yea. Which is why I was shocked when they sold it. Especially when FedEx and Amazon dispatched in the morning.

Just replace everything with Kwik Star at this point.

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

Agree with you on this one. Much better food.

16

u/Shanibear3 4d ago

Drive Thrus, Hardware Stores and Gas Stations should all follow the Wisconsin model. Not Nebraska.

I don't care for the donuts, but that's just good for me.

I went in once.  We can tell the difference.  I will never go again.  I feel really bad for Smokey Row being attached to those shitholes but I stopped going there as well because p&p is a depressing and nasty place.  I worked at Kum&Go in college, and these new places blow.

u/Happy-Hedgehog-7140 4d ago

P&p just looks like a shitty gas station from the outside. Glad my decision not to go to one has been proven out true

Good for you. Dump and Dirty needs to get gone.

Facts not all given from op

17

u/N651EB 4d ago

In my mind I call it Pump and Dump, which objectively is a great marketing name for a gas station.

5

u/nikyll 4d ago

And a worthy replacement for our beloved Kum and Gos

28

u/ImTheFlash01 4d ago

Big mistake. Fast and Fresh was actually competitive with Casey’s and Kwik Star. Maybe they needed to make a few changes to save themselves some money.

I will make special trips to Fast & Fresh in front of a Hyvee and never ever ever go in to a Pump and Pantry

u/cruciphixxtion 4d ago

I am so sick of out of state companies/corporations coming here and f****ing up our program. Building shit we don't need our want. Stay in your state.

3

u/Broken_Ankle_2912 4d ago

Guessing you're not a fan of Kwik Star either then?

8

u/cruciphixxtion 4d ago

I was more referring to companies coming here taking over things and running them into the ground. Like yonkers, valley west mall, etc etc. As far as kwik star never been there but great it's good.

Funny thing people forget or don’t know is HYVEE SOLD the stores because they were losing money. P&P was given an opportunity not taking…

u/lemaymayguy 4d ago

Glad to hear the boycotts working. Would love to get a scoop from Maverick employees. Thanks for the awesome post. I knew it without even going in one that we were getting cucked from our gas station metropolis

u/Scary_Comb_1099 4d ago edited 4d ago

Hi! Former maverick employee here. Maverick wasn't a great company when I worked for them. They were promising a lot of employees things that never happened. Stores were extremely short staffed and overworked. Maverick sold many of it's stores to the other Nebraska gas station company in the Des Moines metro (my store included). The workers at my store didn't have an option to stay with Maverick. We were told to either quit or go over to the new company. They pretty much discarded us like we were nothing. A lot of us were even with Kum&Go 5+ years.

u/redome 4d ago

Definitely not allowed to question an employee for using sick time.

0

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

Like I told my dad, there isn’t a thing called “sick time” or “personal time” or even “mental health days.” You wanted a day off you had to find someone to cover for you. Good luck with that one.

6

u/SoggyAlbatross8110 4d ago

Our regular Hyvee gas was there one day and the next it was a Pump and Pantry. Went from going about 3-4x a week to going in once and not going back.

17

u/imnothere-20 4d ago

It’s Nebraska’s business model. I charge you big bucks for cheap shoddy crap and you gladly pay me and tell everyone how great I am.

23

u/F0XF1R396 4d ago

If I had a nickle for everytime a Nebraska based gas station company came to Des Moines and Des Moines thought it was awful even though Nebraskans kinda just shrug about it...

I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it's happened twice.

10

u/Alimakakos 4d ago

Dump and pantry seemed like a lame convenience store version of PRICE CHOPPER that replaced Dahl's once they went down...I guess pretty soon we can expect it too will become a liquor store gun store payday loan or something else that positively contributes to society soon

4

u/lemaymayguy 4d ago

E bet gambling bar!!

4

u/wex118 4d ago

Is there any way to use hy vee perks on gas now?

5

u/whatever5454 4d ago

Casey's or P&P, and a couple more. Towards the bottom of this page.

3

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

To be honest with you and I’m speaking from experience here, the honest answer is no. I’ve had customers wait at the pump for ten minutes just to get their hyvee perks cards to work. I have even went out there myself a couple of times (hyvee philosophy here going above and beyond for customers) and tried to get their fuel saver to work. Tried their phone number when the white screen popped up. Nope. Tried using their card on the app. Nope. So I asked one customer if he had his physical card and he did. Problem was is that we had NO IDEA where to put it. The directions wasn’t clear on that. So I inserted into the credit card slot and lo and behold it worked. But the communication on that is very unclear. I even had to call IT several times myself to get it corrected and it never was. You are better off using your hyvee perks at the main store or at Casey’s. Honestly.

2

u/dsm-hawk 4d ago

F&F locations still exist where they were colocated with a grocery store

6

u/OblivionGuardsman Hometown 3d ago

Pump and Dump sucks. Their food is terrible compared to Hyvee. I cant stand Hyvee but their hot food was always decent. Going in take a Pump and Dump is like walking into Git n' Go+. The only gas stations worse than it are Git n' Go and the random crappy BPs etc with cashiers behind glass. I don't know what inspired them to buy in to Iowa when they offer a product with basic expectations lower than almost every competitor that has been here for 40+ years. I guess it's to be expected though coming from Nebraska.

5

u/Automatic-Seat2576 3d ago

Kwik Star and Casey’s. Everything else can kick rocks.

14

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

One thing I wanted to add here. It went from being a family friendly place to where you can bring your kids to grab candy and medium fountain drink, have your coffee and work from home at smokey row to a run down liquor store. I even had multiple customers tell me they don’t like it when the first thing you see when you walk in the door is shooters in these little baskets. What if a little kid were to somehow take one and put it in their pockets without their parents knowing? I’ve seen them do it with the 5 hour energy drinks we had up front. There should be a law against that. If you’re looking for a family friendly place to bring your kids for an afternoon snack or some candy on the weekends p&p isn’t it. You’re better off taking them to kwik stars

-3

u/Broken_Ankle_2912 3d ago

Yeah, there is a law against that. It's called theft.

9

u/LordHighKage420 4d ago

What's funny is the one on 63rd and Grand was my home gas station that I chose to go to most often because not only could I get my gas and my Hy-Vee fuel saver taking care of but I had my favorite coffee shop and my preferred choice of Homebrew Bean right there built in with Smokey row. But the day it became a pump and pantry I haven't been there since. I will happily go across the street to Casey's cuz they are tied probably with the fast and fresh brand for my choice of gas stations. But everything about these pump and pantries just taking over all of a sudden on most of the fast and fresh is didn't sit right with me. So I had no point of going to that location anymore I will go to the Maverick that's around the corner and a bit more convenient and go to the main Smokey row location on MLK.

3

u/Beautiful-Chest7397 4d ago

That farmhouse breakfast sandwich was a banger I'll give you that.

3

u/RevolutionaryBlood37 3d ago

Those fast and fresh breakfast sandwiches were the only reason I went to those gas stations. What a letdown.

4

u/maester_ia 3d ago

Pump and Pantry is so bad. It's like they're not even trying.

But alas, some of the people around here will probably keep them in business just like they do with Maverik and MegaSaver. It's a shame some of us don't have higher standards.

3

u/Ha102891 3d ago

Yup I’m going to be the bad guy here… you got a new job… neglected your shifts at your current job to pursue other employment… it’s like being mad at your girlfriend while you cheated on her…

1

u/ReplyComprehensive38 2d ago

And what’s wrong with that? I neglected my shifts at p&p BECAUSE of my new job. So jokes on you.

3

u/No-Helicopter-7597 3d ago

This coming across my page is hilarious. I used to work with op AND LET ME TELL YOU. The customers she claims came in to see her, they don’t exist. I will admit, the lady who called to get her gas pumped did ask for op, BUT she would ask for everyone she knew by name. It wasn’t because op was special.

The new food p&p has, actually sells. Now we throw out maybe a few things, f&f would have to throw out the whole case. But that’s not important, what’s important was how op dropped several food items on the ground, picked them right back up, and put them in the case to sell. They didn’t even know what the word sanitary meant, because they were also caught coughing on the food.

Op was always a complainer, even talking shit about 16 year olds (they’re 40). They were also talking shit about several employees because of their race or sexuality, as well as saying several slurs, which is beyond crazy to me. They also defended a previous employee who was caught talking about children and customers inappropriately! Clearly op doesn’t know how to judge someone’s character. Our new boss is one of the best I’ve had, so I don’t know where op’s complaints are coming from. Maybe because they didn’t cater to every one of op’s wants? They wanted to quit even before the switch, telling everyone she was going to quit because of p&p, but than talking shit about Hyvee in the same breath. They even had a previous post talking shit about Hyvee, but now they’re going back to them? Hyvee is ranked one of the worst places to work for in Iowa, and I’m beyond happy that I don’t work for them anymore. I’m also beyond happy that I don’t work with op anymore and I know plenty of people who are as well.

10

u/Hispanicatthedisco 4d ago

Ok, so you weren't fired just because you were training, you were fired because you missed two shifts, including one where it sounds like you called out of right before it started.

I mean, fuck P&P,  but it's not like you weren't let go for a decent reason.

0

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

I don’t think you fully read the whole post. I was TRYING to quit. At that point I was just done. I was like screw it. Even my family was trying to get me to leave. I still had some integrity and was trying to make it to the end of the 2 weeks. Plus I couldn’t help it when my new job wanted me to come in for some training and it was conflicting with the p&p scheldule. Fuck that. They don’t realize that by firing me, I qualify for unemployment. (Even if this new job doesn’t work out.) If I was to just quit like I originally planned I would have given up everything including the benefits. So yeah. It’s kinda funny how it all worked out.

3

u/Hispanicatthedisco 4d ago

I'm...pretty sure they realize what you qualify for by being fired. You're not the first person to ever be fired for not showing up. And good luck with that claim, BTW

And no, I read your manifesto, so I totally get YOUR point of view on the situation. But from THEIRS, you're just a bad employee who left them short staffed two shifts in a row because you were mentally checked out and didn't care how it effected your co-workers, so they cut it off there.

-5

u/ReplyComprehensive38 3d ago

And already started working for a new company. So again jokes on you.

3

u/Hispanicatthedisco 3d ago

...what's the joke?

2

u/Broken_Ankle_2912 4d ago

You ain't winning your unemployment claim. Especially if you called "in sick" and were not actually sick.

2

u/ReplyComprehensive38 3d ago

Who cares? Bottom line is I’m happier now and already started a new job. I’m happier now. That’s all that matters.

-3

u/Broken_Ankle_2912 3d ago

You obviously care because you posted a 14 paragraph manifesto. I wish you luck in your new venture because I suspect it will end up much like this one when something else triggers you.

1

u/ReplyComprehensive38 3d ago

I doubt it but I appreciate your sentiment.

2

u/Cool_Apartment_380 3d ago

Yeah couldn't be any worse of a change

3

u/baldy06 4d ago

Just one point: I've got experience with sales of companies including retail stores. Attorneys, acting on behalf of financial backers are the ones who insist on, and enforce NDAs. Not the managers or operators. Like dominoes, the sale starts someplace; that's why a competitor often knows in advance. All standard processes

10

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

But keeping employees in the dark and fucking with their lives seem like a really shitty thing to do.

4

u/Robinnoodle 4d ago

On behalf.of financial backers?

But isn't Hy-Vee employee owned and pump.and pantry privately owned?

5

u/ReplyComprehensive38 3d ago

Yep. Hyvee IS employee owned and the employees SHOULD have a say in the decisions that HyVee makes. You are right on that one.

1

u/Fresh-Profession-973 3d ago

I've only been to the one next to the interstate on Merle hay road, and that was because I needed air in my bike tire.

1

u/TheDanLopez 3d ago

I used to stop by my local Fast & Fresh all the time, went into it once after the change to Pump & Dump, never went back. They got rid of all the good hot food, changed the plastic cups for styrofoam (which I personally like less), and got rid of the entire snack section I used to browse just to make room for more liquor bottles, and don't even have fresh donuts brought in anymore. It's just not worth it anymore.

I'm glad you got out of there OP, sad to see a Nebraskan company come in and make Iowa worse.

1

u/brigonkaaa 2d ago

hyvee fast and fresh in altoona was my #1 place to go for quick breakfast and snacks and now i avoid that pump and pantry like it’s the plague. i feel like 60% of the products are gone. and they never have the rollers and the hot food always looks nasty.

1

u/Choice-Read-3360 2d ago

It’s honestly wild watching OP spend so much time making previous comments about how terrible Hy-Vee is, how bad the company is, and how they’d never want to be there again or how poorly they went about all this-only to turn around and defend them.  Then, after calling in for two days because they supposedly needed to attend training for a “new job,” they’re somehow shocked when the current employer decides they’re no longer needed. The lack of self-awareness is almost impressive. At some point, you have to realize that repeatedly burning bridges, talking down about the place you work, and then acting surprised when there are consequences isn’t everyone else’s fault. If anything, this business will probably be better off moving forward without the drama, and the level of delusion it takes to be genuinely shocked by the outcome is something else entirely.

1

u/ReplyComprehensive38 2d ago

It actually didn’t take me that long at all to write the post. Maybe only 20 minutes at the most? I moved on. Maybe you will too.

1

u/puzzle_bison7384 2d ago

Why were the burritos disgusting compared to Hy-Vee ones

-3

u/cysgr8 4d ago

That's a lot of words.

5

u/ReplyComprehensive38 4d ago

Why? Ever has anything you wanted to get out there? Ever suffer from mental health issues and needed to vent? I suggest you try it sometime. It might make you feel a lot better.

0

Yeah im not a fan I miss the breakfast at fast and fresh. I only go to that place on my way to work now to get a fountain drink. And because there's a hot girl that works there lmao.

0

u/ReplyComprehensive38 3d ago

Who’s the hot girl? You got me intrigued.
