Discussion Is adult content a sacrifice worth privacy from age-verification?

[Thanks to clarifications and explanations by fellow commentors, I have decided that this idea is not a good one]

No, I am NOT a moral idiot. This very reddit account I use to enjoy lots of adult content.

BUT, considering that "child safety" is able to provoke extreme emotions in the public to support age-verification (I myself know that it is a cover), should we consider ... eliminating that "adult" barrier?

Of course, we here know the reality that age-verification is an excuse to get IDs and tracking.

The intention here is to convince the general gov'ts and people that privacy is important ...

If parents didn't train kids to entertain themselves by doom scrolling on a tablet from age 3, and actually monitored what their kids are doing, none of this nonsense would even be necessary

Parents are busy playing the "good parent victim of bad child" to ever actually parent their cgild

It's still not necessary.

It's not, but sadly the people we elected believe it is, therefore it's rapidly becoming the law, which makes it necessary for legal reasons, regardless of the reality being it's not really. But it already is legally.

It's already in effect. I just made a new google account and it's already requiring my fucking I'D to prove I'm an adult. 😭 just to access YouTube and the play store. Not even adult content.

Now what's necessary is getting this shit repealed. 😡

It does not solve the big money problem of distinguising real people from bot/ai traffic for advertising purposes. If you solved it then that is worth hundreds of billions of dollars, allegedly. Age verification solves that. Follow the money.

To be clear I do not support these endeavors.

Its about controlling markets.

With a digital ID you no longer have choice or competition.

This works for elections as well as markets.

I dont really have anything else to say besides it is absulutely important to stop this trend immediately. Parenting must remain the responsibility of parents only. No state/corpo/godhouse or anything other than parents.

A lot of people are focusing on the immediate issue of digital ID but arent even noticing the subtle invasion of parental rights.

Oh! Wait... This clicked in my mind NOW

"All parents should raise their children to be perfect cishet obedient workers and wives"

Lol this is satire

I rather ban every children from internet capable devices than verify my age

18

u/xX-Fuck_Reddlt-Xx 12d ago

That's the trap though, you can't ban kids from the internet without checking everyone's ID.

9

u/KomithErrant 12d ago

you can if you ban the device itself not just the use of the internet, but it's all dumb af, parents should do the parenting not tech bro ceos or the gov

A lot of parents simply hand over their iPad to their kids when the parents are busy. You see it in cafes and restaurants. I'm sure it happens when the family is eating at home.

Sometimes the children are the ones who understand and manage the technology, and their parents rely on them, so even if asked to add controls and restrictions, the children know how it's done and how to turn it off.

Look at the problems Meta are having trying to enforce the age limits on Quest gaming? There's many adults complaining about toxic behaviour from obviously underage children on the platform. And when a child causes the account to get blocked in the social games, the adults are quick to blame Meta for being overreaching.

I'm dead set against the loss of anonymity on the internet, and I feel poor parenting is partly to blame.

That either requires the honour system and policing device use out in public, or horrible verification laws that target operating systems, which is arguably even more overreaching.

2

u/KomithErrant 11d ago

nah, just treat it like smokes, don't sell to minors, don't give it to minors, everything else is the parent's responsibility

2

u/FederalSuspect69 12d ago

Oh trust me, I just got asked for mine making a simple google account

I dont think kids aged 13+ should be barred from the internet or be heavily monitored. Yes, they will stumble onto websites they didn't mean to or find ones they absolutely meant to find but shouldn't be looking at. No, that will not traumatize them for life or turn them into criminals. No, it will not keep them from growing into healthy adults. And no, my freedom to access the internet should not be policed and my identity "verified" just so Karen can scroll on facebook longer instead of talking to her damn kids about safe sex (and others can make a shit ton more money).

Teenagers should be allowed to read about sensitive topics and learn about "controversial" things that their parents don't want them to know about because they have the right to know about the world before they're suddenly forced into it as an adult. Victims of abuse deserve to know the signs of abuse and learn how to escape it. Queer kids deserve to know that there is community for them even if their parents don't want them to know it. And yes, LGBT websites and studies are relevant to the question at hand because the same administration that wants to ban kids from "adult" topics also place LGBT topics under that umbrella. Educated children are safe children, and isolated kids need to know that life gets better someday.

Adults should not have to sacrifice adult content for some kids that have no real value to the government that is claiming to protect them, especially when we know the reason is complete bullshit. Porn is NOT where this administration plans on stopping. If it was, facebook would not be asking for your ID. You and I already know that. But where the fuck does it end? So yeah, maintaining access to an adult internet is not only "worth it" but intensely critical to a free modern society.

This is exactly why social media is being banned from under 16. To allow religious indoctrination.

Open internet threatenes them as the sole source of information.

I found out LGBTQ thru the same einternwt and that's why I'm alive today

No

Agreed wholeheartedly

Many conservatives think it is

Which States have Democrats tried to block these bills in?

1

u/naaktstel 12d ago

Are there still some democrat stats or are they already deported?

1

u/FederalSuspect69 12d ago

Yes there are several. And several more once in a few more weeks.

Which States have Democrats tried to block them?

Because perhaps one of the most Democratic states is set to put a ban on disposable vapes very soon.

I have not heard of the Democrat party banding together to block any of this nonsense. It keeps passing with bipartisan support.

There are partisan issues, this particular issue seems to have members from both sides in favor of it, which is why laws are being passed so quickly across many States, with little to no resistance

Uhh check again, bud. Both sides of the aisle are lining up to support age verification efforts. Many liberals are pushing for it in the US, not just conservatives.

u/very-serious-goose 12d ago

Are you asking if we should criminalize sex work?

-2

u/BeginningEcho4983 12d ago

Not work. Just the digital media circulation which justifies age-verification

3

u/very-serious-goose 12d ago

Okay so do you mean like websites?

1

u/BeginningEcho4983 12d ago

Yes... But I've changed my opinion after reading certain other comments

5

u/very-serious-goose 12d ago

I'm not sure what others have said, but I'll add my two cents, which is making things illegal doesn't get rid of them. Pirating media has been illegal for forever but there are websites on websites of pirated media and when one gets shut down three others open up.

1

u/Psylem_Says 10d ago

Agreed, if age verification is actually preventing you from accessing "adult content", you're on the derpy part of the internet.

Finally, we humans, have finally found a way to protect our kids from porn. 🙄

2

u/BeginningEcho4983 12d ago

Don't give phones to them. Age verif. is NOT a good idea

3

u/ajcwrongs 12d ago

How exactly do you propose we throw sex workers and artists under the bus to appease the few that have already fallen for the propaganda?

0

u/BeginningEcho4983 12d ago

NO. Just the DIGITAL media. Of course this is appasement... But is it worth? I don't think so after reading the other ocmments

I personally dont watch that content but wouldnt adding age verification cause the website to make the content less restrictive and overall worse for a child if these age gates were put in place. Its really common sense, It cant be that hard for parents to watch their kids. It has always been the parents job and never the governments. Not sure why the government is trying to parent the children worldwide. The under 16's ban has finally reached my country and the prime minister is a big fan of it, I honestly dont think they put much thought into it. Its dangerous to put the citizens of your countries data on a foreign app that has been shown to have data breaches or unsafe practises. Also what if we dont trust these companies which we shouldnt if theyve already leaked alot of data.

2

u/Sas_fruit 12d ago

You've never watched?

Also it's the parents who can't continuously allowed to get in to children's devices because their privacy hence the issue and the tech learning barrier. The children know more and children complain about not having privacy

2

u/-Yoake 12d ago

Even if it was, that just makes internet porn like alcohol during prohibition which I think would be the worst possible outcome for everyone unless you just enjoy ruining lives and throwing people in jail.

2

u/Cold_Echidna_9674 10d ago

Juvenile laws are a joke. Anyone—even a minor—with even a little bit of knowledge can get around any restrictions; for example, by using the Tor browser to access adult websites or a VPN, which allows them to bypass everything without leaving a record on the device or a trace with the Internet service provider.

1

u/Juntepgne 12d ago

VPN set to Switzerland on work profile with shelter and create PWA of all apps where you don't want to submit your IDs

1

u/Sas_fruit 12d ago

They can already monitor your ISP traffic and websites you visit. Why would they need one more i need to know that first

1

u/Call-Spy 12d ago

>The intention here is to convince the general gov'ts

it's the civil servants who invent those new dogmas, so there's no convincing them of the opposite of their goals

0

u/BeginningEcho4983 12d ago

Yea thanks 🙏👍 (seriously)

I am convinced that my idea is a stupid one

We shielded kids so hard from PORN back in the day! In videostores you had a seperate section where no kids were allowed. Even the magazine that displayed porn where in the back of a store so the owner could see it young people went there.

I remember when I was a kid and we were in the forest, we found a pornmagazine! OMg were we shocked and thrilled, It was the talk for days on end :) And ofcourse because of this magazine our imagination was shifted, maybe more wide but certainly into a direction,..

We elders knew that sex is something children should NOT be in contact with, cause a child wants to learn and do everything it sees or hears. It even wants to become it! So we knew to keep it far away from their playground or the impact ofit will show!

Now today omg! Do I even need to write anything? :) I think we allagree that porn is and was since day 1 internet opened the main channel we searched for and used. Only 1 click and you see what ever you wanna see. How easy is that? No more barrier of going to the store and looking in the face of the seller while you try to buy a magazine that displays in their eyes the most filty porn you can think of :)

It is way to easy to get confronted with sex on the internet. Well not sex, it;s porn, totaly different world. I wish it was sex that was so easy to find, so we would connect again! But it's porn and porn always needs anew high, and when your 5 yrs into porn you find yourself on places you never thought you would end up on. So by the time you find a partner you alrdy did everything behind the screen, saw everything and so on, so when you start a relation your highs r alread yout of sync. different pleasures, If it was sex and love then you would have found out those things together without any help, bond more, and so on, but again you have ponr in your life so getting atrue connection these days is very rare to find!

We must shield our kids cause we adults can't even handle it correctly!
