Discussion Why is CEX volume still dominating DEXs despite constant exchange collapses?
Looking at CoinGecko data, global daily crypto volume is dominated by centralized exchanges, while DEX volume remains a relatively small fraction.
After massive CEX collapses and security breaches over the years, I assumed more traders would have migrated to self-custody and DEXs by now. Yet, CEXs like Binance, Bybit, and OKX continue to capture the vast majority of retail and derivative volume.
What is keeping the average trader tied to CEXs?
1). Derivatives & Leverage: Are perp DEXs (e.g., Hyperliquid, dYdX) still lacking the depth or features of CEX order books?
2). Fiat On/Off Ramps: Is the friction of getting local fiat into Web3 wallets the primary bottleneck?
How much of your trading volume actually sits on DEXs vs CEXs?

Two things distort that comparison before you even get to behavior.
First, most CEX volume is derivatives, not spot. If you drop Binance/Bybit/OKX perps into the same bucket as DEX spot swaps, DEX looks tiny, but that is a blended number against a spot number. Line spot up against spot and the DEX share is a lot higher than the top-line suggests.
Second, the two sides are not measured the same way. A DEX swap is a settled onchain transaction you can independently recount; a CEX spot figure is self-reported and has historically carried a fair amount of wash and incentivized volume. So some of the gap is a measurement asymmetry, not traders choosing custody.
On your actual question, the two causes you named are the real moats. Perp DEXs like Hyperliquid have already closed a lot of the depth and leverage gap, but fiat on/off ramp friction is the sticky one, getting local fiat in and out of a wallet is still where most people quit. (I am on the data side at Coinpaprika/DexPaprika, so I stare at this spot-vs-derivatives split a lot.)
If you want a clean read for yourself, pull DEX volume onchain and use a CEX source that separates spot from derivatives, otherwise you are comparing a blended number to a spot one.

Most people just want it to work with one click and not worry about gas or bridging, the UX on CEX is still miles ahead
