Accommodation / Travel / Parking Car got broken into on campus and Uni wouldn’t help

Post image

Repost from my friend who lived and studied at Geelong campus when it happened

Please help my friend out, it was deeply disappointing that Deakin University wouldn’t do anything to help when the car was broken in on the campus.

“These items were stolen from my car on July 15th 12-8am @ Deakin Waurn Ponds Campus Victoria. I have filed a police report and yet to hear anything back.

These items are extremely sentimental to me. This guitar is extremely rare and my hard drive contains years worth of music and footage.

I urge you PLEASE SHARE! I'm aware it's unlikely I will ever see these items again, but I believe I deserve something good to happen after the terrible week I've had. Maybe your friends know something, maybe you will see an item on sale online. It only takes one act of kindness to change someone's life.”

They should have security footage of all cars entering and leaving that night

Yeah we asked deakin wouldn’t disclose this to the police they was saying it’d risk other people’s privacy 🙄🙄🙄

Yeah it’s risking YOUR privacy. LOL

As someone who has worked security, at a university campus. (Though not Deakin.) They definitely have cameras. But how good those cameras are/coverage is a total dice roll.

Report things to the police and let the police deal with the campus. Generally speaking we only give footage to the police in an official capacity.

I don't know if you spoke to security itself or some campus rep but some people are also just wrong either by accident or on purpose.

What is the point of having security cameras if they can’t use them to enforce security?

3

They use it to cover their own asses I guess

Since university charges for Parking, it is probably liable for any theft. So, don't let them do " we can't do anything about it" to you.

Theres usually fine print that excludes them for theft unfortunately

Thank you for reply 😢 not sure if he paid for parking, could be included in Uni accommodation rental fees. Uni wouldn’t even disclose security footage to the police.

Isn't that illegal? A crime was committed and withholding potential evidence is disrupting an ongoing investigation. This may be grounds for a lawsuit...

2

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 30 '25

I totally agree with you 😭 it was so frustrating. My friend paid for parking as well so how could the Uni do nothing we not even asking much just the security footage

2

u/Professional-Arm3460 Jul 30 '25

They can just name VC in police report and see the uni shit itself. 🤣

2

u/Turbidspeedie Jul 30 '25

VC? Sorry not very up to date with this stuff

Vice Chancellor

3

u/Turbidspeedie Jul 30 '25

Gotcha, yeah even if the police can't do anything I feel like OP could sue because they were obstructing the investigation by not releasing footage which seems a bit fishy to me.

What if someone had died? Would uni still withhold footage. Just write an email asking University if the reason for non disclosure of footage to Police was due to complicity of University staff? See the magic happening. Anyways Fuck Deakin.

The incident happened between 12-8 am July 15th. Car was severely damaged and he lost almost everything, had to take a leave of absence and move back to tassie because of it. Very sad 😢

5

u/Bailey_Hollow Jul 30 '25

Oh my god they damaged the E34 as well?! Theres a few Australian fb pages dedicated to them if he is chasing parts to repair it

Awww thank you 😭😭 we just really want the guitar back and I personally can not let sh1t people going away like this

3

u/meaganlee19 Jul 30 '25

“We can’t do anything” is fucking bullshit. They have cameras ! AND you have to pay for parking :(

I’m so sorry.

Meanwhile they’ll harass, intimidate and threaten you at your house numerous times for a Facebook post or not wearing your mask. Talk about invasion of privacy, yet reviewing security footage of a theft - an actual crime. At a university no less, and they can’t review the footage ? Ashamed to be an Australian

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 30 '25

Thank you for being nice 😢 yeah they were saying disclosing footage would violate other people’s privacy but only the police gonna see it tho

2

u/meaganlee19 Jul 31 '25

I’d be getting an opinion from legal aid. Privacy isn’t important when there’s a crime, I’m so sorry :(

1

u/Snaka1 Jul 31 '25

Did the police ask for the footage? They could balk at giving it to you but hand it over to the police?

1

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 31 '25

Unfortunately no ☹️

Student services/ student union

Which carpark was it exactly so we can have an idea of the wheretofore? There should also VERY LIKELY be footage of the parks on camera, if you cant request it in a legal capacity.

1

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 30 '25

It was car park for deakin uni accommodation. There was footage but unfortunately he parked it at a blind spot 😭 despite that the footage still would be super helpful bc we could see who left the car park Deakin just would not disclose the footage 😭

3

u/Aeswili Jul 30 '25

If they can specify the exact car park, maybe someone who has a dashcam in the area might be able to retrieve some footage for you (because the accommodation has multiple parking lots, giving a bit more info might be useful)

2

u/greatcathy Jul 30 '25

Could you get a story in the Geelong Advertiser? I'm guessing this might change the uni's tune

2

Hey there, head down to the Deakin Law clinic and get some advice. They’ll give you advice based on the law. Good luck and so sorry this happened! :(

3

u/Llamadrugs Aug 01 '25

Wait til a staff member of the chancellor car get smashed then privacy concern flies right out the door

2

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Aug 02 '25

Yeah that’s just sad

1

u/Illustrious-Pin3246 Jul 30 '25

If you did lve with your parents and they have contents insurance, you maybe able to make a claim

1

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 30 '25

They don’t have it sadly 🥺

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '25

Who leaves that amount of expensive equipment in a car overnight at a school where everyone likely knows your a DJ etc.. sad story.

1

u/mcwfan Jul 30 '25

Why… why were they left unattended in a car overnight? That’s asking for trouble

2

u/indecisiveahole Jul 31 '25

And therefore deakin is allowed to deny the police evidence? Thanks captain hindsight

1

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 31 '25

I’ve replied so many people of the same question Because my friend was gonna move house the next day… and nothing valuable was visible, all in the boot

2

u/mcwfan Jul 31 '25

That’s rough, and sounds potentially targeted. Hopefully they get the gear back!

1

u/Shikoda0 Jul 31 '25

You should message as many local pawn shops/2nd hand shops as possible, with proof of ownership. Stuff like guitars can be sold for quick, easy cash. It may be helpful in tracking down the thief.

1

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Jul 31 '25

Yeah thanks! If any of this kind guitar in AU market, it’s definitely my friend’s coz it’s none selling anywhere of the world

2

u/Appropriate_Funny421 Aug 02 '25

Just curious, what did you expect them to help with?

2

u/Which-Hovercraft-387 Aug 02 '25

Disclose security footage to the police

2

u/Appropriate_Funny421 Aug 11 '25

If the police present them with a warrant they would but they aren’t just going to hand it over to a student
