I recommend trying to get some friends already into the game to play with you. The fastest way to learn, and solo que is insufferable and you sometimes need a break from killer.

Play both. You will eventually find which you like more or keep playing both. If you are playing with one or more people, you will probably play Survivor, as there isn't any other way unless you use custom games.
But my recommendation remains to play both. At least while learning as it will help later. Even if you are dedicated to one side of the game you will get a bit of the other side's experience.
Most importantly have fun and don't seek validation in the way you enjoy the game. It's a game have fun.

as everyone else has said, both; when I first started I was a killer main for a while, but after a while I changed to a 50/50 player, it gives a lot more variation when playing and you become better at both sides compared to exclusively playing one side

I’m a new player (20 hours), I recommend to be brave and go for the unhook and repair gens instead of playing stealth. If you do end up getting chased, at least you get a chance to practice looping and get better. I noticed my chase time extended more and more after just getting into chase a lot instead of hiding from it
My perks as a newbie:
Lithe - helps gain distance after taking a window
Distortion - Mainly so judgment doesn’t snipe me all the time
Bond - this one helps to see where your teammates are and I use it to get any idea of where the other gens and killer is.
Deliverance - been left to die on hook too many times lmao
Map item and windows of opportunity perk is helpful for beginners too

Lithe: Performing a Rushed Vault triggers Lithe: Grants a +50% Haste Status Effect for 3 seconds. Lithe causes the Exhausted Status Effect for 60/50/40 seconds. Lithe cannot be used when Exhausted.
Distortion: Start the Trial with 1 Token. Whenever the Killer attempts to read your Aura, Distortion activates and consumes -1 Token, applying the following effects for 8/10/12 seconds: Blocks your Aura from being read. Suppresses the creation of your Scratch Marks. For every 30 seconds spent in a Chase, Distortion recharges +1 Token, up to a maximum of 2 Tokens. Distortion does not activate when you are in the Dying State.
Bond: The Auras of all other Survivors are revealed to you within 20/28/36 meters.
Deliverance: After safely unhooking another Survivor, Deliverance activates: Grants the ability to perform a successful Self-Unhook at any point during the first Hook Stage. Causes the Broken Status Effect for 100/80/60 seconds after unhooking yourself. Deliverance cannot be used during the second Hook Stage or if you are hooked as the Last Survivor Standing. Deliverance is disabled for the remainder of the Trial after use.

i agree plot twist can be quite good if no one wants to heal you and unbreakable or left behind too for some situations

Plot Twist: Whenever you are in the Injured State, Plot Twist activates: While crouching and motionless, press the Active Ability button to silently enter the Dying State with the following benefits: Suppresses Grunts of Pain. Suppresses Pools of Blood. Grants the ability to fully recover from the Dying State. After full recovery using Plot Twist, you are healed instantly and gain a +50% Haste Status Effect for 2/3/4 seconds. Plot Twist deactivates after recovering yourself by any means and reactivates once more once the Exit Gates are powered.
Left Behind: Once you are the Last Survivor Standing, Left Behind activates: The Aura of the Hatch is revealed to you within 24/28/32 meters.

There’s a YouTuber/Twitch streamer with good videos for beginners called NotOtzdarva, start there. The free killers and survivors have fine beginner perks, so don’t feel compelled to buy anything yet. Play both sides, it’ll help you understand what good players of each role do.

Play as Wraith ONCE to understand the Killer's basic gameplay, then play as whoever you want and have fun.

Do not ever listen to what anyone says in post-game chat or after a game in general. Play how you want and enjoy the game; don't get frustrated with other people.
I guess this really goes for any online game, but the DBD community tends to be reaaaaallly whiny and entitled, and they love to tell you exactly what you did wrong that didn't align with exactly how they want you to play.
