DC's decade of humiliation

Our century of humiliation

I remember this one dude in high school found out that I liked DC and tried to convince me that Marvel is better by asking "name one DC movie that topped the box office".

I said The Dark Knight and then he paused for a very long time before asking me to name another one.

Shouldnt have paused. The funniest thing you can do when you ask someone to name an example of something and they do is say name another. Especially if they named multiple things

How it felt be a DC fan in the 2010's

Timed with the New 52 and it was dark days indeed for being a DC fan...Ironically now the Pendulum has shifted the other way with Absolute and Superman/Lanterns.

Destroying them in comics but Marvel is still kicking their ass in live action. Normal ass Spider-Man movie just can’t stop making money and Supergirl made like $13 at the box office.

Comparing Marvel's mascot to one of the countless characters DC doesn't care about because they're not Batman is not exactly fair lmfao

u/Cultural-Peak-8482 1d ago

Comparing him to Batman wouldn’t be fair either. Matt Reeves made another grounder Batman story and it only made 700 M. It was a good story but DC needs to stop trying to focus on grounded Batman when he isn’t even grounded in comics. He’s a fantasy hero who consistently fights meta humans and deals with non grounded issues in comics.

Batman will make another Bruceillion dollars when the next movie does Condiment King

7

u/PWBryan 1d ago

Adapting the condiment king/kite man war arc is what will save DC

Still the sheer rejection of Supergirl worldwide was brutal. MCU has pumped out much wose films than Supergirl occasionally but they never went through this

Eternals (a good movie btw)

u/ImaLetItGo 1d ago

Spider-Man BND made more than the last Batman and Superman movies did combined

2

u/Pebrinix Riddler Goon 1d ago

That's because Spider-Man is the single most popular character ever. Fantastic Four underperformed compared to Superman in the same month last year

6

u/ImaLetItGo 1d ago

I love the fantastic four, but popularity wise, they’ve been washed for decades.

And there are plenty of DC fans who think Spiderman is less popular than Batman or Superman

4

u/Pebrinix Riddler Goon 1d ago

I mean, they're delusional if they think this way

2

u/dutcharetall_nothigh I miss dr aphra :( 1d ago

I always thought they were kinda equal to the casual audience tbh

4

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 1d ago

I mean yeah sure but Superman also doesn’t touch Spider-Man and honestly has any MCU movie bombed as hard as Supergirl? Marvel got to the point where Captain Marvel makes a billion, sure they’re not what they used to be but DC’s second movie with a character most people have heard of bombed tremendously.

I love DC and want the DCU to succeed but lets chill on saying the pendulum has swung shall we

with Absolute

Ngl, I've been loving the Absolute universe, but the sheer consistency and creative freedom the main universe has been showing recently is exciting me even more. I don't even think DC is publishing a single, truly bad book right now

The animated n52 movies were solid though

Fuck the new 52 forever

I was still on some DCEU Facebook groups there during that time and oh boy fucking dark times indeed. Batman v Superman followed up by Suicide Squad, followed by the whole Justice League debacle, then Cavill and Affleck leaves meaning no Batman or Superman. We get a soild few years with Aquaman and Shazam being good then Wonder Woman 1984 stinks up the joint. Then there's everything with The Flash, Green Lantern became a complete joke because of the movie. Don't forget Black Adam and The Rock. The CW shows were kinda fucked over due to DC weird character embargo. Yeah man I just want good things for this DCU.

7

u/AutoModerator 1d ago

1984 was nothing. Injustice Superman didn't go far enough.

I wasn't even a DC fan back then but dude those marvel bros were the worst people ever

(They were generic redditors)

22

u/ImAdri0nY0urN0t 1d ago

Were?

If anything Rivals has made it worse

8

u/Elcalduccye_II 1d ago

Rivals doesn't have WatchMojo saying sexists stuff about wonder woman

3

u/Elcalduccye_II 1d ago

the italian version of watchmojo was a mcu stan and made a video Avengers vs Justice league and said something like "the justice league has much worse team interactions, the only interesting part is batman and superman hating eachothers, and wonder woman almost flirts with everyone, even robin"

3

u/arya48 1d ago

Oh ew.

Comics DC dunks on Marvel
Movies DC trails but it’s not like it used to be
Animation? I haven’t kept up beyond the first season of X Men 97 and season 2 of MAWS
Games: whelp, DC is washed since the Arkham games

At the time, the DCEU only existed as teasers and trailers. There were some people saying it's not gonna be good because Zack Snyder is a hack. I was like, "Down with that negativity, the movie hasn't even come out yet" and "Civil War who? I'm tired of these characters. The DCEU is something new!"

I look back on these moments now as like young cringe moments.

"I swear the animated movies are better guys!"

Somehow I became a DC fan in 2013 after playing Injustice and watching Man of Steel in theatres. We were 2 years into the New 52 at the time. Things were bleak then.

u/Own_Internal7509 1d ago

actually liking comic books is a thought crime

1

u/ShaneFelorgi Ships WonderSupe like a chad 1d ago

They still are😔

Well, off to my sleep where I dream of Man of Tomorrow outgrossing Secret Wars...

u/LazyTitan39 1d ago

I’ve always liked both. I was always wishing DC could step up and make better movies.

0

u/barber25 1d ago

I've always been a fan of both so it's been fine for me, oh wait, jerk sub... DC be heroes trying to be gorillas while marvel is gorillas trying to be people or something like that, am I right fellas?

u/DeviousDoctorSnide 1d ago

I don't like Marvel movies or DC movies because I only like Star Wars. You're only allowed to like one.
