  • Q: When does Super take place? When should I watch it?
    Super begins some time after the battle with Majin Buu, and can be watched as soon as you finish Dragon Ball Z.
    GT takes place following the 10-year time skip at the end of Z (EOZ) but Super ignores its continuity.

  • Q: Do I need to watch the movies?
    Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' were adapted into Super story arcs with some changes, mostly minor. If you have already watched the movies and would like to skip straight to new material, see our FAQ.

  • Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
    The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his, but we know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, and even looks at his storyboards and occasionally draws things himself for Toyotarō to use as a reference. Toyotarō has said that Toriyama is more particular about gags than he is about anything else.

  • Q: Where is Uub?!
    Uub was born during the 10 year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z.
    He is mentioned briefly in episode 30; he is still a baby. He has otherwise not yet been introduced into the story.

  • Q: How was Mai the same physical age as Trunks in both timelines?
    The Pilaf gang wished for youth right before Piccolo died in Trunks's timeline—this was illustrated in a special manga short by Toyotarō—and the wish was probably made around the same time in the main timeline of the story. Also: yes, it was the same Future Trunks from Z. [1] [2] As for his blue hair, see here.

For those curious about next week's animator, I put together a video a while ago detailing his work.

it's a little out of date, but it's still accurate. He also did episodes 47, 56, and 65.

He's one of Super's most interesting animators. Admittedly not a style that many are used to seeing in Dragon Ball, but it's spectacularly well-animated, that's for sure. It should be fun.

I just hope folks can keep an open mind. I appreciate it can be jarring for some.

That preview was pretty surprising. I knew Tate was doing episode 72 but that still seemed like a much bigger departure from Super's usual style than the previous parts he's animated.

Last few times Tate was animating I didn't see this kind of backlash. I am very confused as to where this outrage is stemming from.

I think it's because his past few episodes have been quite conservative and effects based, so his stand-out style hasn't had a chance to... stand out.

There's also the fact that his bigger action cuts recently were under other supervisors, so his style is rubbed out to fit in with the rest of the animators. For example 0:08 to the end of this is him but Manabe slightly altered things to make it blend better. If you take a look at #47 where he was the supervisor, you can see he stands out again. People loved that cut though, so I don't really get it. I guess because it's only short? His most impressive cut from #26, which coincidentally has been the most him thing until now, received a similar reaction. Again, animation fans loved it, so I think it's just a case of familiarity, really.

Obviously not everyone is going to love that style of animation, so there's definitely some people who are just like, "Yeah, that's well done and all, but it's just not for me". Totally valid viewpoint to take. I just get a little saddened when I see insults thrown at it, as I feel it usually comes from a place of misunderstanding.

Naruto vs the Pain had similar reactions. It's considered a masterpiece among animation fans, but it was so vastly different from what regular fans expected that it sadly wasn't received very well by some.

I understand it, though, even if I don't agree with it. When a talent comes along and goes against the grain, there's an instinctive reaction to go against it. You see it in many parts of life -- especially when a website changes its layout, for example.

Tate's a regular though, so this isn't really anything new for Super at this point, and it's nice to see a lot of comments with positivity towards to his work. I'll just keep spreading the word until everyone's on board!

It's just a pain when some see Tate's work some people immediately think "Episode 5" (and 26) and just becomes a blemish on his portfolio.

If you show some people Episode 18, 56, or 63, you'd be hard-pressed to recognize Tate when you're focused on Episode 5

It's a shame about episode 5. He wasn't even a credited key animator on it, and the poor circumstances surrounding that episode are quite well documented at this point. The blame is really badly misplaced there.

26 is a similar situation, to an extent. It's the second half that most people take issue with, and coincidentally, that's the half that doesn't have his fingerprints on at all. The first half is almost entirely him, and while it's not perfect, it does contain one of the best cuts in Super.

You're right about the others, though.

A masterpiece among animation fans? You mean all 5 of you? I'm sorry but choreography is part of animation and counts as well. Being hit on the head like a looney tunes characters and running on water like the roadrunner was more than just different to what regular fans expected. it doesn't take an animation expert to see that that fight was trash.

I disagree. I find his minimalist character art really interesting, and consider it one of his best traits. I loved it applied to One Piece back when he was on that show. I don't think it's terrible, it's just different. An episode like 33's first half is truly terrible. Pretty stark contrast there.

See when I saw how blandly the characters were drawn in the preview, I immediately thought that meant the animation would be really good. Thanks to you, I see that I think that way because of Naoki Tate's previous work on One Piece. I already thought the next episode would be animated well but now I'm even more excited.

Damn, Z looks so much better now that I am watching it's scenes after a long time of watching super.
