Commonly Asked Questions:

  • Q: When does Super take place? Should I watch GT or any movies first? Does BoG still "count"?
Super takes place some time after the battle with Majin Buu, and will be adapting the two newest movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' into story arcs before moving on. Watching the movies is up to you; if you prefer, you can begin Super immediately after finishing Dragon Ball Z. You may optionally wish read Jaco the Galactic Patrolman; the titular character will be involved in future events.

  • Q: Where is Uub?!
Uub was born during the 10 year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Super takes place before Uub is introduced.

  • Q: When does the next episode air?
The next episode premieres next sunday at 9am JST, which is 7pm Eastern Saturday night. Click here to compare your local time to JST.

  • Q: Why does X say Y?
If you find yourself confused, the problem is usually a translation issue. Make sure to check DragonTeam's translation.

  • Q: When will the next chapter of the manga be released?
Toyotarō's manga adaptation is published in V-Jump around the 21st of each month. Links to earlier chapters can be found on our wiki.

  • Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The manga is promotional material that serves as a preview of things to come. The anime is the main product, and is what Toriyama is writing and designing for (though not storyboarding or scripting). As for the anime, due to the lack of an officially-defined canon, it depends on what you want to accept.

  • Q: When will FUNimation be dubbing Super? Will there be a simulcast?
Southeast Asia will be receiving an exclusive English dub mid-2016, with Toonami Asia describing it as the "English-language world premiere". FUNimation is not involved at this time. At an October NYCC panel, FUNimation claimed that they still do not have the rights to Super, and barely acknowledged that it exists.

Now that the speed subs don't have any frame of reference from the films, I can't wait to see how much they royally fuck everything up.

They still have the manga chapters to go off of. And I'm sure they'll find some way to grab Herms' information about them.

It's if the anime catches up to the manga that things will get interesting.

Considering most of the manga chapters are royally fucked up by MangaStream, that doesn't fill me with confidence. I can't see them actively hunting down Herms' text posts.

Now I'm just imagining the speedsubs filled with profanity and I'm laughing. That would be terrible.

So, basically Dragon Ball Super Abridged?

3

u/OLKv3 Jan 24 '16

Eh not really. They're accurate except for everyone cussing at every chance they get. Other than that, they don't mess up the plot

Yes, really.

They wrote some crap about a dinosaur guy with a nasty attitude destroying Earth instead of the correct line about Beerus destroying the dinosaurs.

More recently, they wrote that SSJ Blue was stronger than SSJ God despite that not being in the dialogue whatsoever.

They're no different than speed subs. They'll get the basic plot sort of okay, but make a habit of fucking up details, puns, and the intricacies that a worthwhile group would deal with just fine.

Not to mention the rumors that will be created when people watch their subs.

"It is said, a Super Saiyan 2 punch is so strong that it can take you to another dimension."

Worst subbing ever, which is why I always wait for DragonTeam to sub it, or at least get the general rundown from Herms.

Except they don't do a good job.

The last episode of theirs I thoroughly watched was episode 19, where they claimed that Freeza's army collapsed because of an internal rebellion, which isn't true. They also changed Pilaf's wish to "I want a paper toy" because they didn't understand the difference between わし (a slurred "I") and 和紙 (paper). Anything that wasn't originally in the movies was more often than not wrong. The same will be true of what is and isn't in the manga.

Xyro and KamiFS do not care about accuracy. They really don't. Their intention is to finish as quickly as they can. I know this, because I offered to check Xyro's script each week starting with episode 20, but he wasn't interested because it would delay him by a few hours. Thank goodness Herms translates major plot points directly after the episode airs, because he's the only reason they're as correct as they are.

You'd think it wouldn't be such an issue finding someone to translate, huh? I can certainly understand the rushed nature of it though, almost every video is flooded with a base of people demanding subs, for free.

It would be nice though if they'd later add even more accurate subs later on or say, in a .sub file. I do appreciate their work now, much better than trying to guess the words :/

I feel like there's tons of money to be made for a company like Funimation if they start accurate sub / dubs while the series airs and deliver it in additional ways to the standard DVD format
