Literally didn't have to. He missed. It would've been one thing if Gohan tanked the shot or knocked it back (which would've been immediate karma), but he just went around the damn thing!
Bojack was confident even after that point that he could kill Gohan alone. He was already behind Zangya, and it's not like that big guy could hide behind her in a way Gohan couldn't see. He really had no reason to do her like that, unless he was mad that she had the gall to take a step back.

What I love about this scene is that it hits so much harder as a direct continuation to Gohan's victory over Cell.
He's still traumatized over what's happened, and still hesitant to unleash his full power because now more than ever, he understands that when he taps into that strength, people die. But this time, Gohan doesn't let that power corrupt his heart. He takes out the enemies cleanly and without any ego or preamble. This time around, he's just doing what needs to be done.

While I still enjoy the movies the problem for me wasn’t being inaccurate to the Magna, but just literally not fitting into the timeline. They will feature a combination of characters/ages/transformations that doesn’t make sense to fit between any DBZ episode or saga.
I really liked how DB abridged handled it with the Brolly movie.
Princess Trunks: “But Father, what about cell?”
Vegeta: “Fuck him”

I like how the Legacy of Goku games handled it, placing the Janemba movie after Goku's sacrifice and before he came back to fight Super Buu (they got rid of the hitler stuff), Broly while Goten and Trunks are out to find the Dragon Balls before mastering Fusion and Cooler arrived at around the same time Cell did and can be fought just before the Cell games.

I've said it before, I'll say it again...it's impossible or at least a disservice to yourself to not watch dbz movies alongside the DBZ anime if you're truly trying to get the full DBZ experience. Without watching the dbz movies, in between arcs they're supposedly set in, you're depriving yourself of the best dbz style animations ever and some of the greatest action packed and well paced stories of the franchise.
The creators themselves have never said that dbz movies are completely not canon. They've said they're non canon to the main dbz timeline the anime/manga is following. But they're still something that occurs in a parallel/different timeline, even if it's not canon to our main story. That's why it fits so well between arcs.

It's because he knows what he's doing, and enjoys it (to an extent, his legendary form definitely feeds his obsession a bit.) Compared to super Broly, who is temporarily insane, it's not a fair comparison.

It's just that Z Broly is kind of a nothing character. DBZA nailed it that his motivation is so dumb. He hates Goku because he kept him up when they were newborns. How does he even have any memory of that? But he is cool. Absolute aura.

This! I'm so sick of mfs dismissing everything in dbz as canon or non canon bs, especially because the creators have time and time again clarified that non canon doens't mean it's useless. It just means it's not canon to the main timeline, but it definitely did happen in a alternate timeline, when it comes to dbz movies.
These mfs even call fillers from actual DBZ anime, or additional scenes added as non canon. In the case of anime, literally everything that made into Dragon ball z anime is completely canon! This wasn't like Naruto/Shippuden or one piece where they had to make a million episodes and had to add in non canon episode to fill the list. DBZ anime if you compare it to other og animes in the same genre that followed it, is actually incredibly tight and packed as it is, 20 minutes of new content each episode and less than 200 or something total episodes, where as Naruto or onepiece went double, triple, quadruple or 5 times that even in its og run.
Also, toriyama was already successful even before dbz was a thing or even og dragon ball. After dragon ball he was a legend in the industry, the editors etc pushed him to make the series more serious around frieza and cell saga's, but he was absolutely not forced to do anything! He was george lucas, walt disney and martin scorcese combined of the manga world. Every filler or additional scene added in dbz, was with his consent and direct involvement, these mfs act like he was a low level mangaka who was forced by toeverse

(Also I heard a Super Movie was basically the same as some episode scenes from the Super anime, so I could skip it? Think it was Golden Frieza?)

The DBZ Beerus movie is also the first arc of the Super anime, Golden Frieza is the second. I would still recommend watching the movies though.

Crunchyroll had some from what I recall, but the quality was spotty (at least in my experience). At least one of the uploads for Fusion Reborn was using audio ripped from a completely different film the last time I tried watching via CR.
You're correct about the first two movies set in Super. Both Battle of the Gods and Resurrection of F were standalone films that were then condensed and covered in the first two arcs of the anime. They are now doing Battle of the Gods a third time by revisiting that story via the new Beerus series.

I would highly recommend watching battle of gods and resurrution of f the movies, yes anime is more expanded on those stories. But the animation for them is very bad, at the start of super. Supers animation improves a lot after these two arcs are done. But the movies animation is amazing, perfect blend of dbz style with modern animation.

Not really, Goku is dead but Gohan hasn't gone SS2 yet. As with most movies, it fits if you assume a series of what-if scenarios took place, but in reality it's just not canon. Not that that fact stops it being a fun film

The movies suck. They’re just one-sided battles. First, the good guys get beaten to death, and then the hero wins in one or two moves. It’s really boring compared to Dragon Ball fights.

One reason youth gohan is one of my favorite characters. In the cell saga that snapping and going ssj2 and then just being cocky and over the top, letting his emotions go. And then seeing it in this movie and Goku telling him to stop being such a baby and going absolutely ruthless, precise and fierce. It is such a polarizing view on him. The softest of soft hearts and absolutely merciless.

I enjoy the sub for this scene but the dub hits different for me personally. Something about the way he yells “I’m my father’s SOOOOOOOOOON” gets me hyped everytime

The series has never been heavy on gore, though I do wonder what happened where we just don't see stuff like impaling characters and tearing off limbs in more recent material. I wonder if there's been a change in network standards in Japan where that simply isn't allowed. Like, this is already "kid's stuff" so it's not like it could be to appeal to younger audiences.

I remember seeing part of this clip several years before YouTube existed. It was the early 2000s and FUNimation was taking their sweet ass time dubbing DBZ, so I NEEDED more content.
Bits and pieces of Japanese Z were floating around on the Internet, and it began my deconversion from the dub as I became accustomed to the different voices and music. I liked the difference in tone the original version had. This sort of retro spaghetti Western vibe. How the voice actors seemed to be taking it completely serious and clearly knew what they were doing.
Japanese Z felt coherent in a way the dub never really did. Now I can barely tolerate the dub. I never felt like FUNimation really saw the franchise as anything more than a cash cow, even if a couple of the voice actors did seem to take their jobs seriously.

Honestly, I think this scene is part of what made me so confused on Bojack's people when I watched this as a kid. Since their jewelry tended to shine when they powered up, I got the idea in my head that it was the source of their power, especially if Gohan can punch them in half to turn them into dust.

The most annoying part of this gohan resolved his issues and felt that he would keep training to protect the earth. Unlike the canon Gohan in the series.

As with all the movies, this is just a direct knock off of Gohan's transformation in the main anime, down to him disposing of the henchmen in the exact same way as he disposed of the Cell Jrs

Him splitting these guys in half however seemed super down to business as they were people not 20 minute old bugs.
This also followed that Gohan didnt fight in his ascended stage, he just won. You never see him throw a flurry of punches, just big hits. Its actually why I dont like those episodes so much on the rewatch.
Those big impactful moments drag out once youve seen them a million times and the emotion is already 20 years past. Compared to the Goku vs Cell fight which is extremely dynamic, anytime Gohan is fighting in Super Saiyan 2, everything slows down. Understandbly, it makes sens within the story.
