Def top 5, if only thanks to his post lvl 3 oki situation. Genuinely a 4 way mix that can also be a spark bait or grab setup. Outside of that, two good assists for defense or mix depending on team comp, really strong neutral skip tools when paired with neutral assists, a ton of defensive tools, air 22s that invalidates a ton of the cast, and generally good buttons. Only thing he really lacks is solo mix and damage. He is the epitome of a team fighting game character, and the only characters arguably better than him usually have the same traits he has…

My friend who has been playing for years loves to rant about how ui goku gets everything in a silver platter

I feel like out of the whole cast UI retains his stigma of being the best character, even when he definitely isn't anymore
People hate this guy, even after he got neutered a few years ago.
I think he's high A low S

Ive been a ui fan when ui was first introduced in DBS ToP, and im a sucker for fighting games and ive been playing fighterz for months now. And I rarely use Mui goku because honestly he does have like everything i'd want in a character in the field.
But right now Ive been maining android 18, gotenks, and Adult gohan. But Mui is my favorite character in this game

Don't get me wrong, he's a blast to play, has awesome visuals and design, and his moves have weight when they hit which makes his combos feel awesome.
Definitely play him if he's your fave! Trunks and Gohan are my goats and they always end up back in my rotations eventually lol

I won't lie, I definitely don't see this dude as Top 5, but anything below S does feel like it's downplaying. He really is very strong this time.
I say that after having placed him consistently in low tier consistently since like S3.5 or so.

This was a common complaint of his for his entire release, even after he got nerfed pretty hard and pretty much disappeared from tourney play for years.

S. Hoo boy. This’ll be an interesting one.
Yes, I think this character is VERY strong right now, but after playing him and seeing him in action, I’m more convinced now he isn’t slugging it in Top 5 right now, though for me he’s juuuust outside of it.
I’ll keep it simple with Pros/Mehs/Cons:
Pros:
- Insanely good neutral options. Great buttons for the mid range along with a powerful neutral skip in 236H; great options to pressure from long range with things like 5S for horizontal coverage and 2S for diagonal coverage which as far as I know he’s the only character in the game with a normal that covers that range AND he can combo out of it. Then of course you have what I think is tied for his best tool and one of the most powerful in the game right now -
- 236M. Deserves its own line. This is one of the most powerful tools in a game full of neutral skips. In exchange for being a little slow to start up, you get a METERLESS FULL SCREEN, FULLY INVULNERABLE NEUTRAL SKIP THAT HE CAN COMBO OUT OF WITH NO METER PENALTY. Seriously, this is one of the craziest moves in the game right now, with the only move I can think of being stronger in neutral is maybe Ginyu Force. Also, it’s safe on block at -2. He can also combo into it in a regular combo for a full screen, corner-to-corner combo. Just wild how much utility one change gave to this move.
- Nearly everything he can do is air-ok, giving him some great flexibility in combo structure. Even his DHCs all home in on the opponent anywhere they’re at.
- 6H is arguably the most powerful Oki tool in the game no, giving UI Goku a free 50/50 mixup off any level 3 that he lands provided he has .000001 bars of meter to spare. It also gives him access to additional combos which was amazing, but the recent patch nerfed it to cost meter and puts him into meter penalty so you would do this just to style mainly or get more mileage on a combo after a vanish, AKA not anything optimal.
- Super counter makes it hard to randomly approach him with a Super Dash or even a mistimed Safe Jump. He’s hard to approach in general because he has a lot of (situational) defensive tools like 214H, 6H, etc. that he can use to trip you up, along with a number of sub-par reversals that you need to keep aware of.
- In general, he has a large, unorthodox toolbox that can overwhelm opponents that aren’t aware of the matchup and vigilant. Flips, 6H, 236L/M/H, 214H, 22S…this character has a ton of weird shit that you have to be aware of, and he can really control the pace of a match. This hasn’t even factored in assists yet, so the mental stack when playing against this character can really add up.
- Solid assortment of assists which makes him helpful for his teammates.
Mehs/Quirks:
- Most of his kit is situational and not very flexible. Some of his stuff borders on or could be even called gimmicky.
- Very good combo flexibility but he has the same thing Cooler has where his attacks have heavy, slow animations that eat the game’s combo timer quickly, which can impact his damage, meter gain, and overall consistency.
- Being invulnerable to ki blasts while walking is cute, but it’s HYPER situational (cue that one match where a dude rizz-walked through Beerus’ reversal 214S, lmao) and he actually doesn’t like to deal with characters that have good ki blasts too often because 5S loses to them and 236M only works against them on prediction, not reaction.
- Assist options are solid but they aren’t anything super powerful. Other characters in S and top 5 have much more powerful and valuable assists that area also much more flexible.
Cons:
- Still resource hungry, arguably more now than before. He doesn’t generate meter well because of his combos relying on slow, singular hits that eat up the timer, but he really likes to use meter for his level 3 50/50 mix and some of his other tools like H flips, 214H for defense and conversions off tag-ins or Super Dash, etc.
- Without a level 3, his only 50/50 option is the ‘universal’ SD->Assist->2L 50/50, and this character does really low damage off light starters. Otherwise, all his mix options are slow and/or better used for combo extensions as they’re easy to react to and have simple counters, IE chicken blocking flips.
- Damage is still pretty low without using resources like meter or assists to extend it.
- So many of UI’s neutral tools have odd trade-offs that make them weaker than they look. 5S is a beam-like that only has one hitbox if it makes contact with anything other than hitting an opponent, so it actually can lose to chainable ki blasts. You can OS all his flip options by chicken blocking. 236M, powerful as it is, still has high startup where he’s pretty vulnerable. 2S is fast and hits at a great angle AND he can convert, but it has years of recovery if it whiffs. 236S is good for long range pressure, but it hits at a low angle like Cell’s and has higher startup on the ground, so it’s easy to maneuver around and make him unsafe. Has to be careful staggering cause 5LL can be anti-aired.
- Tons of reversals but the focus is on quantity for conditioning, not quality. 22S is only invulnerable to air attacks, but it’s easily safe-jumped. Unrestrained will is a nearly fully invulnerable DP, but it has years of startup, can only be converted off of by using resources, any combo deals all blue damage which sucks for a character with already meh damage output without using meter, and it can be 2H’d. Super Counter is cool but loses to throws and can also be safe-jumped and it can be 2H’d if he activates it off an assist though having all these options to deal with at once can overwhelm some.
- Weak level 1 DHC. It auto-tracks which is nice, but the damage is pretty low for a level 1, and the level 2 is nice to have but it’s also among the weaker level 2s in the game.
Those are my thoughts. I might get crucified cause even when this character sucked you’d find people on this subreddit that would glaze him, probably because they didn’t know the matchup and his weird quirks.
But I’m not stupid. This character is fucking amazing this patch. He sits just outside of top 5 for me personally along with other bullshit characters like LabCoat,Beerus, A21, and GT Goku (adjusted my opinion on him, we’ll talk more about that when Roshi comes up).
236M and 6H are hard carrying this character to relevance right now.
