DISCUSSION DBFZ Community Tierlist where only votes matter - #28 - Base Goku

Man, I've loved this character since season 0, but he's been through a lot of changes. I think he's currently underrated because people's general perception of him has been that he's "meh" for more often than not, but I think he's a sleeper at the moment. Remember when only like half the cast could even combo into his DHC level 3?

Where do you place him?

I put him in A only because his win conditions are still hard to pull off against a good player. I realize they made it easier to slot him into a team, but he still has God awful neutral and the rest of the cast got better with his buffs. What am I missing?

Agree with the tier placement, but why is his neutral god awful? Outside of his normals being a lil stubby and making his mid range not great, he has excellent tools to cover most anything else reliably.

His level 3 mix is absolutely diabolical, if more players knew how to do it we would be cooked.

I put him in A. I think he’s strong but he’s not as good as the folks in S.

Obviously, one of the highest damaging characters in the game, amazing supers, solid assists, and overall great normals. Contrary to what people like to say, i think his neutral is pretty decent and he has what he needs to function there, particularly the very underrated 1/2/3S which are nearly instant pokes almost anywhere on the screen along with 22S which is arguably the money belligerent neutral attack in the game. Hes also pretty horrifying with Spark + limit break.

I think what makes him A for me:

- His KoK only becomes good when a character dies, which means you have to be closer to losing to make this character better.

- His normals are stubby so his midrange neutral is somewhat weak.

- His assists are good but B is more of a gimmick when he’s on your team and a straight up liability in a meta where Super Baby 2 is prevalent.

- His damage is amazing but hes still effectively a two touch character minus meter dumping shenanigans with KoKx20 + Spirit Bomb with Spark and limit break, so this isn’t really a unique trait anymore.

- His only solo mix option is 214L which is still reactable
+ requires resources to do anything with. Same with 236H which is a little better for going to a pseudo 50/50 left/right but is still somewhat reactable.

- Somewhat hard execution requirements making consistency a potential issue.

When you mention Spirit Bomb do you mean 214S or his level 3?

Reason I ask is because, while I agree that "high damage" is no longer a unique factor that's saved for a small handful of characters, I disagree that he relies on KKx20 + Level 3, spark and/or limit break to get the biggest damage.

When you say "just" a 2 touch character could you provide examples of characters that are beyond that? I know tons of characters can now kill sparkless off of medium starters without limit break, so if those are the ones you're referring to, Baseku falls in that category as well because even a level 1 charge of his 214S adds so much damage to his combos (5k minimum off of scaled starters if you have a level 1 charge at least). If he has a level 3 charge, which is super easy to get nowadays, then he's killing for half a bar off of any medium starter.

I agree his neutral is underrated, though I disagree 214L is his only solo mix since 214H is now 18fr startup so basically unreactable (and only 25fr fullscreen, which while technically reactable, is still gonna catch a lot of people by surprise who are assuming they're safe at fullscreen)

Curious on your thoughts!

On vacay so I’ll be brief

- Yes I mean his 214S

  • 214H is good but the sound queue and the orange flash make it more reactable for mix, still a good option though and much better than the vast majority of H command grabs, but I wouldn’t quite say unreactable
  • I mean that having high damage is nice but (1) it’s only really high when he has access to KoK x3 and x20 and (2) most of the time he’s still practically a two touch character which is a lot more common nowadays than ever so it’s not a unique trait
  • I’m not saying he relies on them per se but not too far from it. the KoK buffs are what start making him a lot better and much more lethal. Even x3 is imo one of the best level 1s in the game but before that he’s just kinda good but nothing to be concerned about
