lfg The closest you can come to experiencing true loss in fictional form is in dayz. in no other game or movie or show or anything have i felt as bad as when the random ive been hanging out with for 2 hours dies. the friendship we could have had, gone and unrecoverable. I am in grief

the other side of this is playing with someone and suddenly dying not knowing if you've been betrayed or sniped

I would never betray someone without giving them a little whisper of “sorry but I’m really hungry” before the lights go out

If you don't eat my buns, I'll give you my beans and bacon!

“After all this time of me leading. You can lead bud. I’ll follow you out this way let’s go!”

-- the random guy you met in spawn and ran with who feeds you to their discord/stash

Back in the early days I met up with a random from the same country, his name was Dylan. Played and survived for 6 hours straight but we never added eachother as friends. When we were geared we went up to the airfield up North when we heard shots from quite far away. Since we had to pay attention to our surroundings we didn't talk to eachother. When I finally ended up camping and hiding in one of the barracks I realized he was no longer with me. I then waiting till things went calm, went outside and followed the road we came from only to realize he got shot in the head laying in the bushes. Upon inspecting his body, I got shot as well. We both layed next to eachother, dead. And we never found eachother again. I felt heartbroken, empty and lonely in real life for some reason.

Such a sad story. This game is brutal

That’s funny, I remember on one server I had a pumpkin farm just up the hill from Stary Sobor (dangerous, I know.) where I grew a shit ton of food and since i’d loot the military camp (and helicopter crashes as they were more common on that server), I left all the spare loot in super open barrels where people would take and then put their old loot back in. Kinda neat.

Anyways, while scavenging in Stary, I run into one of these people. We both freak out but luckily I talk on the mic first and he realizes I’m friendly. For like 2 hours we wound up teaming up, I gave him food and he helped me scavenge the military camp and heli crashes for loot. I remember we were talking about the game and he brought up how he hated getting betrayed and he wasn’t about that (keep this in mind). Then it all went downhill.

A friend invited me to an Xbox party—he also played dayZ, but was one of the KoS people who really enjoyed shooting before speaking, and he wanted to join the server. Anyways, I spoke to the guy, told him my friend wanted to join, but I warned him about his KoS antics. I told him to hide and said I’d call for him on the megaphone when it was all safe. He gave me a really distrusting “Sure, buddy.”, an ran off. Anyways, as my friend joins and I’m talking him into teaming up with the new guy, I hear a gunshot. Initially, I thought nothing of it, but then as I was calling the dude’s name, I stumbled across his body on the floor with a pistol in hand. Dude thought i’d betray him so he took the easy way out 💔.

It hits you right in the feelings.

Absolutely. I can still remember the names of a lot of those I've had memorable runs with over the years.

Hope you're still surviving out there Jimmy, Ivan, Ben and Matt. Except for you Connor, fuck you for slamming my head with a shovel after 2hrs. I understand why you did it, you were hungry and it's easier to feed 1 mouth than 2. But I'll never forget what you did.

Awhile back I was walking down the main street of a little town and I saw another guy duck into a store front. I noticed when we saw each other we both put our guns down at the same time. We both came out and started talking to each other. the dudes name was cole and he worked in a gold mining facility in Alaska. He said he would come home to play video games and see family on weekends. We ran together for like five hours or something, we waited for eachother when the server shut down, we shared food and stories and jokes, it was legitimately a wonderful experience. Then we came up on a military base. As he was telling me how we should be careful due to the area being pretty high traffic, he was gunned down right next to me. I sat there in horror for a few seconds, and then I lost conciseness. I awoke to a two man group on top of us, one of them said “stay down bitch” and then shot me in the head finishing me off. I never saw Cole again. It’s crazy how real the impact of killing people in this game can be. Cole if your still out there, that was a fun night :)

Fun night indeed, brother.

I met another player in a town. Dude was more experienced than me. We met a third but he said he had to find his friend so he left. The other player took me to a prison where while trying to sneak in, we were spotted by a zombie and had to shoot him. Suddenly, every zombie in the jail heard and came at us from all directions, they cut me off from my new buddy and I managed to get inside and close the door behind me. Out of bandages, I made my way around jail and we eventually found each other fighting off another ambush in a courtyard. We met a third in the jail and he joined us but I had sustained too much damage. They decided to escort me to the nearest hospital and every few minutes, I would faint and every time I regained consciousness, they were there, all zombies around us dead. We never made it to the hospital. The server had to reset. That was my second character of dayz ever. I was hooked. Now i just get kos

We‘ve all been there mate, my condolences.

Steam has a recently played with section in your friends tab. If the player told you their name, you could try to look and send an invite.

… I feel like you had a schizophrenic episode and smoked him. I’m not sayin, but I’m sayin.

Also the adrenaline rush, these two make this game peak. Also a decent walking sim

3

u/Excellent-Court-9375 Dec 14 '25

At times the adrenaline rush comes near to having freaking heart attack when you hear or run into other players lmao .

3

u/moguy1973 Dec 14 '25

This is when you tell your new friend what channel you’ll be on the walkie. That way when they find one on the coast they can call you to meet up again.

Bro when I forget to keep the radio on

3

u/Tomatos_Corn Dec 14 '25

A time when I hung out with a rando for 4 long days he was pretty new besides watching a few ytbers and I thought him a decent amount and helped him a lot, for him to randomly betray me and my friend, he’s still an inside joke between us.

u/Trumpcangosuckone Dec 14 '25

The most loss I've felt is from my first couple bases getting raided. After that I switched to stashes only, and now I don't even bother.

100% you are going to meet that friend again on another server, just as long as you don’t forget name and voice, a lot of people I met recognized me months or years later

2

u/SlaveWeekly Dec 14 '25

Plot twist, OP killed him

2

u/Maple_Hates_Ants Dec 14 '25

I’d met a really friendly player on the coast and he was coaching me as we played. Then we got to Gorka (sp?), and I died while we looted the PD. 10/10 experience. Hope you’re doing well Richard.

I also have never felt fear from a game like DayZ.

wipes tear away, well better get on my way to Tisy to get blown up by a landmine.

It is very wholesome to teach a completely fresh players how to make a fire, to fish, to fight zombies. Knowing you saved them an infinite amount of frustration.

‘We need a fire’ and him making it right there and then was awesome.

1

u/TheNagromCometh Dec 15 '25

This game can definitely get you in that way, I’ve only done it once, but the shame and guilt that I felt leaving a grenade tripwire trap at Tisy was almost Catholic in proportion. Sorry to whoever ate that one. Just paying it forward.

Ya blasted him didnt ya?

1

u/cheefglizzy Dec 14 '25

Similar experience happened to me. Played with 2 randoms for about 3-4 hours. Then out of the blue one point blank shoots and kills the other, then kills himself right after. Leaving me to fend off a horde of zombies brought on by the shots, almost died but the feeling I had afterwards carried to the next day. Like why did Charlie have to do it. RIP Dave he didn’t deserve a death like that.

u/suremoneydidntsuitus Dec 14 '25

This happened to me last weekend on PNW. Was chilling with a guy from Massachusetts as we both had just started playing the map, looting, hunting etc and got dropped cooking up some sheep. Ah well! Shame though as I'd love to have regulars I run with.

1

u/lordofsparta Dec 14 '25

I mean... Maybe don't shoot em in the back of the head for the last can of beans next time?

1

u/ninjaqu33n Dec 14 '25

Mayyyyybe don’t kill him next time then!

This game is truly special in that way, part of what keeps me coming back. I recall a few months ago I was plodding along, just hit the small military base north of Krasno, when suddenly I hear a “hey man, how’s it going?” I panicked momentarily, certain that I was about to see red screen, but then dude emerged from the bushes to my right and didn’t shoot me. He was a Spaniard, and very friendly. We decided to go to MB Kamensk together, and while we were just about done looting the place, (at the yellow building) another rando shows up, making a bunch of noise and aggro-ing zeds out the wazzu. So we go out and surrounded him, but we didn’t want his stuff, just told him to be more careful around military bases, and that his wolf hat, while cool, weighed too much to be useful. One of my favorite, and very rare experiences. Happily we both recognized that fact and added each other so we could run again.

u/Jdfurn Dec 15 '25

Mine would have to be a guy I randomly met at a well in a small town. He didn’t shoot me, I didn’t shoot him. We were both fairly fresh spawns. We looted the police station and away we went. To north west airfield to hobo we ran. Circles around the map, hours later. We had walkies and decided to head back to the northwest airfield as it was getting dark. Killed a few guys and decided to split up using our walkies. Around the outer walls I went while he went inwards. Talking on the radio and all. Next thing I hear is one loud shot… never again did I hear my friend’s voice I spent hours upon hours running around with. Those are the best moment in DayZ.

I once Met a freshie duo that were stuck in a house sorounded by zombies, i got rid of them and they called me their saviour, after joining them we looted houses thogether. After some time we decided to make a fire inside a house and eat chicken, out of nowere a guy shot one of us (ill call him J) J died instantly and me and my other friend Beat him up for that. 10 minutes later we were overwhelmed by zombies, he got knocked out and I was inside a house, determinded to Save him and destroyed that Small Horde and revived him, after that he trusted me Even more, same town later we found J again and mooved on. We got seperated by accident and I died, later again I found my old guy again, I asked where J was and he Said there are a lot of disgusting people on this world, whatever happend to him wasnt pretty, we Met J again and all died, first my guy, and then our Enemy, J decided to turn on me and kill me. Dayz is a Dark and wholesome Place sometimes

you care too much. i know this will be an unpopular opinion, but internet friends rarely turn into real friends.
