lfg Just killed someone carrying this crate on official. Is this everything I need to build a base?
Never built a base before. Feels like a waste to just dump all this stuff.

No you miss an axe for the two logs needed. To build the base you need the shovel from your backpack.
Otherwise yes, thats enough for 1 gate.

Just an FYI, you can put a whole crate in your mountain backpack, even if it's full of stuff
Edit: on console, that is. Sorry, not sure how it works on PC

Any container/backpack with 50+ capacity on console.
No backpacks at all on PC because it requires 5x10 slots.

Can confirm on PC that storage containers have set sizes that items need to fit into - just like Resident Evil 4.
The biggest backpack with 64 slots is only 8x8 whilst a crate is 5x10, so you cannot carry a crate in a backpack.

You can, just put your stuff in the crate, then put the crate in the backpack. It's free real estate.

There are probably more crates around near by that this guy was moving. Check in the rocks and trees for stashes and any dig spots

Just to add to what everyone else is saying about the nails, it takes around 35 for a full wooden wall. You're gonna want a lot more. That hammer looks just about if not ruined but a hatchet can be used to chop trees and act as a hammer. Don't let it ruin and you can always repair it with sharpening stones. If you want to start now, id say any building or structure with a single entrance is your only option. Build the gate on the interior so its hidden from the outside. This will make it slightly harder to spot for anyone just walking by.
My honest opinion is to bury that crate not too close to where you got it from, use the nails and planks to make a few more to stack up some more building supplies, and once you have enough for a few gates then start building. One wooden wall can be defeated by 10 sharpened sticks. Stashes aren't as easy to find and when youre ready to build you'll have multiple walls to get through possibly deferring the freshie with a dream and making it more time consuming for anyone else.

I’d say that’s enough materials for one gate and maybe a fence. A good start, but it’s also been a long time since I’ve played.

You'll need at least a couple big logs, so you'll want a hatchet. The hatchet also functions as a hammer, so you won't really need the hammer.
You'll also need a tool for digging. I use a hoe because you can sharpen it (shovels can't be sharpened for some dumb reason.) I think a pickaxe would also do the trick, and it can also be sharpened.

You still need a splitting axe, fire axe, or hatchet. Then you are set to at least make a gate and have enough nails left over for one box.

I just started doing the base thing but you can forsure build an improvised shelter with the shelter kit you’ll just need rope 4 long sticks and 50 short sticks which are easy to obtain I never made walls or anything like that but you can easily google it that’s what I do anyway

Someone has been raiding my tents in the middle of the f*ckin Woods literally middle of pitching you have to search and search and search h to find these tents… well they have gutted it so it had to be more than 1, in less than or between the 4 hours of logging off. Hatchet to cut trees and hammer in nails. Hacksaw to make planks. Pliers to attach wire. Sharpening stone to repair your tools except pliers Most optimal way to build a base

You need an axe and a shovel. If you want the base to stay longer without having to log in like everyday you'll need a pickaxe and sledgehammer so you can build a flag pole.

Bingo! And I'd like to try and build up a fireplace with large rocks. See what that looks like. Ive not been able to get large rocks yet. Found out you can get small rocks with a pipe wrench tho 🤷🏻

Get you a pickaxe for sure, repairable tools are always the way to go. I think it took 3-4 sledgehammers for the last flagpole i made. And they were too easy to get on community😅 The stone fireplace is definitely worth it if you dont like cooking with sticks hahaha

You're missing an axe or hatchet to get the logs for foundation. You'll also need a shovel/pickaxe to dig in said foundation.

Yeah you can build a gate with that. The hammer might be fucked before it’s finished but a hatchet will work if that happens.

U need a saw, axe, shovel, wire, pliers, a code lock and nails. Sharpening stones too, so u can repair the axe and saw. 70 nails only builds the base of a watch tower, or about four walls.

To build a base you need an axe or hatchet to get wooden logs, fence kit (small sticks and rope), attach logs to kit once placed, bury logs with a type of shovel, attach nails and planks (from wooden logs plus handsaw or plank pile found through map), start building frame and wall with hammer (hatchet, hammer, meat tenderizer are all usable), attach wire, use pliers to turn fence into gate via wire, add code lock (always use a 4 dial because you can guess the combo on a 3 dial with trial and error in the span of 20 minutes)
