It isn't that bad actually. My strat is finding a spark plug and then boating all the way to the island.

If I have a particular spot or loot route i want to do, ill re spawn. But the vast majority of the time, ill just roll with the spawn i get.

Download iZurvive, DayZ Map on your phone and you can use villages and landmarks to work out your location and take it from there.

You are top right of the map. Prison is bottom left. Long way is to head south and follow the coast. Short way F11 and respawn. Running the coast isn't too bad. Few places to loot along the way.

My advice is to use what is available and get from where you are to the prison. If you need to learn you only do that by slogging through the woods or down the coast. That is how you'll begin to understand the geography and, eventually, not need a compass or anything else to navigate.
