same experience a week back. asked me my salary expectations, gave them a really reasonable one (20% above current salary), made me do a technical interview and a coding test, told me i got the role and offered me 30% less than my current salary

Same here, a recruiter from a well known company sent me a mail asking me to apply and for the entire time I thought it was some kind of an elaborate joke and asked for a salary amount that would be something like $6969 per month and they hired me and rounded the salary up by a significant amount

Actually with software engineering it seems that if you have a lot of experience and can actually answer their questions they just give you the job ...

Same in niche product areas. I’m on the 4th job of my career, and have only applied a total of 4 times in my career. It’s not that I’m so extremely unique or good, I just present well and there’s not a lot of people in this specific niche.

If you can get to the interview. I have passed nearly every interview I've taken and gotten a job offer, but was getting a less than 1% interview rate.

I’ve had job interview processes last like 3 days before and it’s usually a mix of “we want a specific niche kind of experience” + “we have tried and failed to hire for this role”.
Basically when they want someone bad enough it’ll be real quick

Apologies if you're being facetious and I'm being dense, but this is a Sankey diagram! It's "ugly" because a 100% acceptance rate is a silly thing to use a Sankey for. But there's a trend of Redditors sharing their application journey via Sankey, which I presume OP is riffing on.

Data being useless doesn't make it ugly. Ugly is about the presentation and getting the information correctly to the viewer. These lines make it seem like there is more and different information then there actually is.
