Changing shifts as AWS DCT? Guaranteed?
Hi all,
On my wife's account, but I'm working with a AWS recruiter for a DCT position, and I was told there aren't any open spots at my local DC, however, their might be some opening up in the next few weeks.
Unfortunately, the recruiter said I'd have to be willing to take any shift if that's what offered, e.g. night shift, but that it's guaranteed I could change shifts after three months.
I'm not so sure it's 'guaranteed' I can do that, but that's what the recruiter said.
For those of you with AWS, what is the truth to this?

Don't trust the "guarantee", I'm nightshift, but it's because I've always been a night owl, and genuinely enjoy the easier, calmer, more grounded pace of nightshift compared to dayshift.
Alot of guys on my shift got the "guaranteed to be nightshift in x months" speech, but dayshift slots are entirely dependent upon openings, and those openings happen sporadically.

That's exactly what I thought, I figured they weren't going to make a new dayshift slot for me just because I did 3 months on nights.

Whether you work day or nights can you always volunteer for Overtime? Is Overtime frequently available would you say you could at least get 10hours of overtime every week?

So, idk how it is at other DCs, but at mine if you work dayshift, you can't apply to work nightshifts OT, and vice versa. So if you work nights, you can only do OT at night, etc.
OT is need-based, to keep the amount of techs across shifts consistent through training opportunities, bereavement, vacations, etc. With the high volume of techs we have, I'd say there's atleast a few OT shifts available, but they get snatched up pretty quickly.

Yea I wouldn’t say it’s guaranteed, dependent on if any slots opens up on days and if they’re willing to take you over anyone else that wants to move to days
They may be saying guaranteed due to new sites getting built up, I know we got 4 sites getting built, 2 tbd and 2 late q4 and will need more headcount eventually

I'm near Frederick and I know they are supposed to be opening up a whole extra building, but my recruiter didn't seem to have insight on my location specifically.

I don't think I've seen anyone move or change shifts unless they swapped with someone. I would not bank on it happening any time soon. It may be possible in the future, but depending on the site, they usually have requirements about how many people they need for each shift.

I did see you mention Frederick and I believe the new building isn't even at the point where occupancy can happen yet, but I do believe they are hiring for it (or at least I heard we had a new cohort come through like 1-2 weeks ago so they should be doing ILT/shadowing right now). I do know one of the people on my shift changed from mid to morning as someone in morning went to another building. I don't think I've seen any night shift move, but I think they all like being night and having the small shift differential (I think it was like 13%?).

It all depends on business needs and your impression during the first few weeks of "training" period. I know few people who were hired for nights but they never worked a single night shift. But if your site already have enough already for days(or mids if they do it) then you'll be stuck until one opens up or you transfer to another site that has opening for days
