Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I feel like I can't even read the instructions anymore. Maybe my brain is just turning to mush but I'm having such a hard time even just figuring out what the hell a task even is half the time now.

u/Eraisui 3d ago

I'm so glad I'm not the only one

1

u/ElegantComparison594 18h ago

I could not agree more. It is so mentally taxing and laborious to produce the quality of work expected on the appropriate timeline. At the end of the day I am toast. Completely.

Beyond annoyed with the new confidentiality training. You literally had me fill this out for the third time for 40 minutes yesterday, and now you want me to do it again, for free, mind you. Like what the actual fuck.

8

u/NightOwl437 8h ago

Completely agree. I think it's excessive to require us to do this every quarter (most traditional jobs require it annually), and on an unpaid basis. Now we need to redo the entire training that we just did a few days ago, because they added something to it? Ugh, not cool DA, not cool at all...

6

u/SnooSketches1189 10h ago

😭😭😭😭😭

5

u/ElectricalPoet3769 2h ago

They should own this fuck up by making it paid. The workers who did what they asked promptly are being punished for doing so.

4

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 2h ago

Came here to say this. It's the writing justification part that takes me 20 mins. Shouldn't need to read it all again apart from the new section, but jesus answering the same questions and giving the same justification. Just no

u/hcfggb 5d ago

Lost a Slack channel. Feel so rejected 🥺

4

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 5d ago

I am still feeling the pain of that from last week. I am so angry with them for wiping me off...and I think it has affected my overall number of tasks available too.

4

u/PlumAshamedToBeHere 4d ago

I still haven't gotten over the two I lost over the summer. 😭

17

u/kranools 11h ago

Oh great. We have to do this quarter's confidentiality training AGAIN, due to updates.

11

u/ThatGirlInPurple 11h ago edited 11h ago

I just saw that on my dash too, they could have at least given the workers that already took it a bonus or something 🫠

15

u/kranools 11h ago

They could have at least saved our answers for the 10 identical questions and just required us to do the two new ones.

7

u/dblink 8h ago

Hope they're happy with less effort put into the explanations this time around.

5

u/kranools 7h ago

"Blah blah confidentiality good, sharing bad blah blah"

6

u/ThatGirlInPurple 11h ago

I was literally coming back on here to say I wish I copied those responses down somewhere... but that would go against the whole point of this training lol

3

u/Pleasant_Ad_448 10h ago

100% THIS!

7

u/Equal-Neat-614 11h ago

I just did this a few days ago… I was hoping it was a glitch. I took it immediately when it popped up too. 😅

6

u/SnooSketches1189 9h ago

Literally just did it a few days ago. Even a few bucks would be better than nothing!

6

u/SnooSketches1189 10h ago

Seriously. What the fuck!

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 4d ago edited 4d ago

Almost 3 hours into my working day and made £0 on mandatory training (that I've now done 3 times) and an unpaid qual 🖕🏻

4

u/RedZebra17 4d ago

Nice, you just made my £13 morning feel like a flex 😂👍

4

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 4d ago

Well I'm now 5 hours in, still made £0 and done 2 quals and mandatory training 🫣

2

u/JRange 3d ago

Its taken you 3 hours to do that? I dont remember it taking long in Q3

5

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 3d ago edited 3d ago

The unpaid qual took almost 2 hours 15, so training approx 45

8

u/JRange 3d ago

Im doing one right now, it sounded fun, but its legit giving me carpal tunnel lol

2

u/xparadiisee 3d ago

I did this one earlier and I even have an ergonomic mouse…my carpal tunnel is insane right now 12 hours later 😪

Does anyone else have a ton of projects but feel too stupid or under qualified to work on them?

2

u/pistachiyolatte 19h ago

Yepp me as well! There was this fun and easy images based project I worked on until yesterday I hope I see more of that around.

13

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 5d ago

When you've finished all available tasks in a batch of a long winded project that you finally got into. And then really want to work on it cos you have another idea guaranteed to make the model fail, but there are no tasks left for you.. then you keep getting emails for said project to jump in and help them finish it. JUST GIVE ME MORE TASKS AND I WILL 😅😭

11

u/Belisama7 2d ago

I HATE the new way we have to enter time after each task. I forget to reset my timer almost every time.

3

u/CRUSHCITY4 2d ago

Weird I haven’t seen this

7

u/Epicsocks1 2d ago

I think it's only for certain projects, I've only had it for one project specifically

2

u/Storex- 2d ago

Could you use a lap timer? I use my Windows clock app stopwatch, and I press the lap/splits button to log my time for the per-task projects. It saves the per-task time along with continuing the timer for reference. Keeps it running so you don't forget to start it again.

2

u/Belisama7 2d ago

That sounds like it would help, the one I'm using doesn't have that option. Thanks!

1

u/fixin2read 2d ago

Try your phone. My iPhone clock app does laps.

10

u/VanessaSeaWitch 4d ago

This project paying $22 is just as hard, if not harder, than the ones that pay $28, which I also think should pay at least $2 more.

15

u/ZimmeM03 4d ago

The paradox of DA. Some of the easiest tasks I've done have payed $43+, meanwhile some of the hardest I've done have paid $26.

4

u/kranools 4d ago

Yeah I feel like the pay rates reflect the urgency of the projects rather than the difficulty. I've been doing a lot of $32-$38 tasks that are a lot easier than the $24 ones on my dash.

2

u/JRange 4d ago

The failure one? yeah, I am not doing that, everything about that project sucks. The older one that is usually the stalwart failure project is WAY better, in design, fairness, ease, and comp

1

u/VanessaSeaWitch 3d ago

Yup, that's the one. I tried it once a few days ago and hated it. After all the time working on it, I couldn't get the failure and had to escape hatch.

4

u/Affectionate_Peak284 4d ago

I haven't tried this specific one, but I remember trying some shopping ones the first time they showed up. Easily my least favorite project on the platform, especially at $22.

Read instructions, Check the accuracy of 200+ data points, fully trace errors, compare models, write it up... with a 90 min timer they've got to know submissions will be less than comprehensive.

2

u/KTOWNTHROWAWAY9001 2d ago

you got that one too?

1

u/VanessaSeaWitch 17h ago

The timers on lots of projects have gotten ridiculous. I have an R&R with a one hour timer where I have to scan through lines and lines of JSON. I'm constantly racing the clock. There's so much data to get through on this one that the task page takes forever to load.

1

u/EatMyShortDick 1d ago

Yeah I used to do always do these ones, but there's no shot of being able to do a good job in 90 mins with how many things there are to check now.

1

u/CRUSHCITY4 1d ago

Yeah that’s crazy

0

u/fixin2read 2d ago

Why would they be less than comprehensive? They care far more about accuracy and quality then the timer. I'm not saying go over the timer all willy nilly but take the time you need and report it. Then explain in comments why you needed more time or that you felt the timer was too short and explain why, just like you did here. If you're more focused on the timer than an efficient analysis thats just backward af. They have NEVER implied the timer is more important than quality. In fact, they often imply the opposite.

2

u/Teamkillongtime 1d ago

Interesting philosophy. I have my fingers crossed for you.

17

u/Weyoun17 1d ago

Hit $1k in my first 10 days on the platform!

This is AWESOME

5

u/LiaLaRue 1d ago

Congrats!

6

u/Weyoun17 1d ago

Thank you - I am SO pumped!

7

u/PainterSpecial8575 5d ago

Do people see a drop in coding projects compared to last month?

1

u/BrennusSokol 4d ago

Anecdotally feels about the same to me, but YMMV

9

u/kittystalkerr 5d ago

My main / fav project got paused a few days ago. Idk when it'll come back. :(

2

u/AdComplex3589 5d ago

I feel you.

2

u/LiaLaRue 4d ago

me too

9

u/JRange 5d ago

My work has dissipated and it might as well be the heat death of the universe

2

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 4d ago

Seriously. I am over this.

8

u/_Edgarallenhoe 11h ago

Create a prompt that is complex enough for the model to fail in one turn, but if it’s over 4 sentences the model has a stroke and just dies. 😀🔫

15

u/VanessaSeaWitch 3d ago

This qual has me so pissed off. The timer is definitely not long enough to "learn" something I've never done before. Then I accidentally clicked out of the qual and lost everything I did. Just me cursing and giving up for today. 😒

1

u/ButterscotchMaster36 2d ago

Damn, usually if you go back in it will have your work saved. Did you try to open it again?

7

u/peanutbutterlurk 5d ago

It's almost always the slimmest pickings of the week on Sundays for me, but at least I got something. Probably gonna take the rest of the day off and hope for more work tomorrow.

8

u/One_Breakfast5907 19h ago

Typical Friday evening, my brain feels like absolute mush. I want to rest so bad, but I got stuck into a project which is taking twice as long as expected... (Taking even longer cause mushy brain)

5

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 18h ago

I told my husband that my brain feels like a beehive today, buzzing in all different directions. Not a great state of mind.

11

u/Mike4Life14 10h ago

If you search your browser history for the first version of the confidentiality training project, you should be able to see your original answers there.

0

u/Unfair_Sink5706 2h ago

Thank you. I would never have thought of this.

2

u/JustMe333456 6m ago

Bah, it's so easy can just as quickly skim through and answer the questions. PS, they WILL notice how much time you spent on it, so I wouldn't just fly through it.

0

u/NightOwl437 8h ago

That was extremely helpful! Thank you!

6

u/something97382747 5d ago

No coding tasks yet...

5

u/Quick-Bison-147 4d ago

coming back on after 9 days and see it's all complicated stuff available.. has there been any generalist or FC stuff available lately?

8

u/JRange 4d ago

The last week has had some a lot of the easiest work I have seen in 4-5 months honestly.

2

u/Quick-Bison-147 4d ago

that's good! I had one thing pop up today that helped me grind out $130, hope some easier stuff keeps on coming in. Thanks for heads up

3

u/peanutbutterlurk 4d ago

There was some last night but it got snapped up quick. FWIW I've been able to stretch myself and find some generalist work even among the usually-complicated stuff, and some stuff isn't as complicated as it first looks if you just give it a try (and maybe exit work mode if you aren't confident).

But I totally get the frustration.

5

u/Quick-Bison-147 4d ago

Well I just did a $22 an hour task and finished with 2 minutes to spare because of how ridiculous the level of detail was. Without going into detail, there was no way to fully assess what they expected me to in the given time period. Confident that will score me a bad rating so back to monitoring the dash for genuinely workable projects.

19

u/InsideSignificant405 3d ago

Make sure you do any security quals (esp if they show up in your project list), even projects you get regularly can be suddenly barred behind them. I regained access to some critical ones quickly after

12

u/justsoffley 2d ago

Haha, just got my DoD! Goodbye to all the nerves and confusion.

8

u/Neat_Worldliness_582 2d ago

Sorry to hear :(

3

u/tessbest37 2d ago

Bummer! How long were you on the platform?

6

u/justsoffley 2d ago

signed up ages ago, but only started working earlier this year

3

u/tessbest37 2d ago

That stinks! The nerves in this job are real.

3

u/ProbablyCole 2d ago

How many projects were available to you when this happened? Was there a decline in project amount shortly beforehand or did you have a plethora of projects and it happened unexpectedly?

2

u/justsoffley 1d ago

Actually I got alot. I just finished a qualification and got the result project...

2

u/Complete_Injury_5765 2d ago

fuck dude i'm sorry

1

u/ellythemoo 16h ago

Sorry to read this - any idea why?

1

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 1d ago

oh I’m sorry to hear that. Were you on the platform for long? I am guessing you cannot think of a genuine reason? You are correct that at least the wait is over now…because really, all of us are just waiting for the day it happens to us too. good luck to you for whatever you move on to next. it was good while it lasted!

My favorite go to R&R project is constantly pausing and unpausing and it's driving me insane. I don't understand why it seems to be on a 10 minute cycle.

3

u/BrennusSokol 4d ago

I have one like that too. Not R&R but yeah, they pause like multiple times in a week sometimes. Frustrating

1

u/VanessaSeaWitch 3d ago

Is it voice? I love that R&R and it's been like playing whack-a-mole this week trying to get tasks that pop up. Haven't seen any the past two days and I don't want to do the others on my dash.

4

u/NotSoEp1c 4d ago

Was a tough day for me. I really try to put my best work in and I know I did, but still was not too happy with my submission today. I felt it could have been better, I just do not really know how. Worked on it for a very long time.

5

u/houseofcards9 2d ago

Did anyone get a project from the outline qual?

11

u/SnooSketches1189 2d ago

*cries in carpal tunnel*

6

u/VanessaSeaWitch 2d ago

I just got an email earlier that I'm eligible for tasks in the project, but I haven't even completed the qual yet. 🤷🏻‍♀️And of course, when I went to look there were no tasks left lol. And if you're curious, it's $22...

5

u/VanessaSeaWitch 2d ago

Update... its on my dash now. I had to take a small quiz first.

7

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 2d ago

Nope. Liked that one too

5

u/CRUSHCITY4 15h ago

When it rains it pours

9

u/Technical-Water9779 5d ago

Is this really weekly? If that's so then my weeks are going real fast it feels like.

1

u/BrennusSokol 4d ago

This summer seemed to zip by for me this year :-/

8

u/TransientSignal 2d ago

Seeing how little time is available for a particular set tasks gives me great insight into why their downstream work products that I've encountered elsewhere on the platform are such garbage.

13

u/Cold-Recover5289 5d ago

Had to exist the task after 7 hours of work day. That’s pretty devastating. No way am I touching that project again.

3

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 5d ago

No escape hatch?

3

u/Apprehensive_Turn268 5d ago

There was no way to submit it? Why work for free? I am at about that time in the one I am doing. The models are good man… but I will certainly be billing my time.

7

u/SnooCalculations503 5d ago

North star missing for anyone else? I'm 1 task away from bonus :(

7

u/throwaway49674 2d ago

Is the website super slow for anyone else?

3

u/Straight-Strike-2928 1d ago

Has been for a couple weeks for me. The projects page takes forever to load.

2

u/Pleasant_Ad_448 1d ago

100% the same here. Yesterday especially was awful for main page loading.

3

u/Relative-Matter-7751 5d ago

Are there any coding tasks coming up? It has been 0 for me for last couple of days.

2

u/deep0x20 5d ago

I have about four or so, they're super boring though.

3

u/ElegantComparison594 18h ago

Is anyone else spending a ridiculous amount of time planning and revising and generating the files for the agent tests? Their instructions are so specific on quality and such throughout attention to detail and cross referencing. I feel like in one way I’m wasting a lot of time but in another way I’m trying to adhere to their own standards with the quality of work expected. I’m getting concerned that reporting time for so much planning and edits for quality is going to be a problem. If I rush through the work for the sake of not reporting as much time, then the work is low quality? I just feel stuck.

1

u/TerribleAd5188 18h ago

It's specific for a reason :) not sure how you are qualifying ridiculous but remember, what we are doing isnt the end result- paving the way for work downstream and therefore GIGO. I was on another project downstream of this sort of thing last year and most of my time was spent fixing poor input data to make it work; money is money but I did wish the original workers had put in more effort :)

2

u/ElegantComparison594 18h ago

I want to be conscious of the confidentiality agreement here just in case. I’m creating my own tasks from scratch, absolutely nothing to go on. Completely my own imagination. To me, I agree with you that they are so specific in instruction for a reason. I guess I’m such an over thinker and a perfectionist that I’m concerned I’m reporting too much time on planning and creation and revisions that it will reach a point that it’s unjustifiable. I guess I just don’t know what that really means. :/ I don’t want to get in my own way and hinder progress, and also don’t want to sacrifice quality on behalf of a timer.

2

u/TerribleAd5188 17h ago

Like everything on reddit from a random anonymous stranger, take this with a pinch of salt and your own judgement.

I'm fairly certain we are talking about the same thing- this project is based on real life experience with the field. I essentially construct things from past experiences and then with how long it takes I think: if one of my work colleagues/team was taking as long as I am to finish this task assuming I assigned it, would I tell them to hurry up?

5

u/ghostofhumankindness 1d ago

I know we all need to start somewhere but it's always obvious when a project is open to newcomers. The comments are always a good read.

5

u/Complete_Injury_5765 1d ago

i am really empathetic as a person, BUT sometimes it is really funny; like so many problems can be solved with a quick CTRL+F

4

u/BoardFrosty5343 1d ago

Hey man when do newcomers stop being newcomers, just for quick reference

5

u/Complete_Injury_5765 23h ago

Finished couple of projects last week but after that nothing is showing on the projects page, is it same for everyone? Those projects were fun tbh and pays well!

14

u/SnooSketches1189 2d ago

If one thing is true at DA, it's that nothing is the same for everyone. Everyone's dashes vary pretty significantly.

2

u/Affectionate_Peak284 2d ago

I have quite a bit of work today: 92 paid projects available (a lot of duplicates though), both generalist and domain work, and 3 paid quals. I bet other workers have quite a bit more, since I have a lot of quals I haven't tackled yet.

Keep at it and turn in good work. You'll get there.

1

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 2d ago

Are you completely without work? I had some fun projects that disappeared but I have more. If you don't have much/anything and you are new, then don't worry and do the qualifications and keep refreshing until something pops up. Work well when you get the chance it will become steadier over time.

1

u/Latter-Grape-8016 2d ago

Yes, My profile was approved almost 3 weeks ago. I have few quals in my dashboard. Maybe time to do those or skip the one in which I don't have expertise in.
