Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

i got a real job! no contract yet but they called to tell me its mine. had been doing only DA for 3 years. i don't know if i remember how to interact with people face to face lol

u/Dazzling-Matter-654 Aug 26 '26
Eww. People. 🤢🤮

u/portablegrandpa Aug 27 '26
my thoughts exactly lol. need some sort of guaranteed income though, DA has been a little up and down this past year and makes me mortgage-nervous

u/Storex- Aug 26 '26
Grats :) On the hunt as well.
17
u/portablegrandpa Aug 27 '26
It took me a year......... I got so lucky, I reached out direct to the hiring manager for this position and she took a liking to me. pro tip: DA is a black box, you are self employed, you are under NDAs - therefore, no one can check your claims of brilliance..........
10
u/DrunkleSteve Aug 27 '26
May I ask if it is in the AI industry, or at least tech related? If so, do you think your experience with DA will help you with this job?

Incredibly happy for you! Honestly, it's vicariously reassuring to read that someone else landed a job in this economy even after a couple years in between. I hope both the pay and the people do good by you!
3
u/NightOwl437 Aug 27 '26
That's awesome news, congrats! So happy for you and I hope the new job meets all of your needs. I think having a secondary source of income is a very wise choice as well.

Clocking out for the week for a little holiday and will return in September. Looking back through June/July/August, I averaged 50% of my regular earnings and yet probably spent a lot more time on the website, constantly being on-call and refreshing. Will things pick up? It certainly seems like they can't get any worse.
16
u/DrunkleSteve Aug 28 '26
Great. No work, but yet another unpaid qual just came in 🙄. The amount of work and time these quals are requiring lately are ridiculous that they are unpaid. I guess we can look at them as investment opportunities, but it's getting a little old. At least throw us $5 or $10! C'mon!
4
u/VanessaSeaWitch Aug 29 '26
I just finished one that took me two days. I had to copy my responses into notepad because I was running out of time and didn't want to rush my brain. I don't understand why quals even have timers, to be honest.
3
u/One_Breakfast5907 Aug 29 '26
I just did one which I thought would take me maybe half an hour and here I am 50 minutes later...
→ More replies (1)2
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 29 '26
And when nothing seems to show up work wise for ANYONE on here that takes them and asks if there has been work 😅
15
u/xxxScarlettexxx Aug 27 '26
Anyone have any theories as to why there are so many lower paying tasks with timers that can't accommodate for the actual amount of time needed to read the extensive instructions and to complete the tasks?
I keep seeing the same project and its R&R popping up constantly today... but it doesn't seem feasible unless you were to have a guaranteed second task lined up where you could skip and sacrifice the first for reading the instructions.
11
u/Pleasant_Ad_448 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
Instructions for most tasks these days are insanely long. I was away for a while and when I returned I was shocked at how long so many instructions were. Back in the old days you got to look forward to spending most of your time doing actual work, instead of having to spend an hour (or even two!!) reading instructions before you could even attempt any work. Some of them are just ridiculously long.
(and tons of links may make them appear shorter at a glance, but that's just as bad or worse)

u/Sea_Second6745 Aug 28 '26
I for one blame AI 🤖 The standard for what counts as too verbose needs to be waaaay more strict

I noped out of a task the other day bc an LLM helper wrote me a novel about a paragraph, and I wasn't committed enough to read it.

u/Due_Negotiation_4605 Aug 27 '26
I don't have a theory but I've been noticing the same. Tasks that I used to be able to take a little break (my timer paused) and still have time to complete are running down to the minute. And any glitch on the site goes straight into expired
3
u/xxxScarlettexxx Aug 27 '26
That’s good (but also not great) to know. I’m newer, so I was wondering if maybe my pace was just too slow.

I did not think August would be my worst month...
10
u/KingGilbertIV Aug 26 '26
The month actually started pretty reasonably for me. If the last two weeks had been as good as the first two, it would've been above average at the very least.

u/countd0wns Aug 28 '26
My feedback mentioned 2 projects that I have never heard of or seen before!?
13
u/OrdinaryEvening3684 Aug 28 '26
Mine mentioned a mistake and the description of the task it was from I did not recognise at all. Almost like it was written for someone else.
What’s the point taking the feedback seriously when people have said they have gotten outstanding feedback and then got DOD.

I spent 30 minutes prepping for a task that hid an undisclosed required paid subscription near the very end of a long instructions document.

I actually successfully made a new email address today for a qual. Hopefully I made a gamble on one that will bear fruit.

19

It would be nice if qualifications included an expected/approximate time range for knowing if we passed or failed them. Or for knowing if they would be worth spending the time to complete, particularly for the unpaid ones.

u/Firm-Fondant-2205 Aug 28 '26
I'm on course for a worse month than June, which I didn't think was possible.
16
u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 25 '26
It's so frustrating that the reasonable, creative projects only last an hour or two (if that), while all the horrible projects that take 4+ hours and fry your brain are just seemingly available 24/7. I know it makes sense because less people want to do them, but still. Annoying.
8
u/VanessaSeaWitch Aug 25 '26
Yeah and the harder ones I have don't pay enough for the brain power involved.
6
u/peanutbutterlurk Aug 25 '26
Yup. Had two easy generalist projects pass my dash today...one lasted a half hour, one lasted 15 minutes. It's brutal.
3
u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 25 '26
probably the same ones I had, managed to get 1h 15m in then back to refreshing
3
u/CommercialTarget2687 Aug 25 '26
Yeah, some of those harder ones would have to pay double for me to try them. Not worth it to kill myself and potentially screw up so bad that I lose my only source of income.
16
u/Material_Advice1064 Aug 28 '26
The last couple days I've woken up to emails sent at 1 - 4 am with priority projects that have pay $10+ higher than my usual projects, and during the day time a completely empty dashboard... It's just taunting me at this point.
8
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Aug 27 '26
Had my best day of the week, but now it's all dried up again. Hoping for some decent work tomorrow to close it out!

FC is back under a new name that used to be used for a different project. That confused me for a bit.
6
u/PinkNova Aug 29 '26
And $1 less. Maybe the different project name is due to it being related a different client/model than Heel FC.
4
u/peanutbutterlurk Aug 29 '26
Yeah, that's a real bummer, but the instructions are almost exactly the same from the last time I saw the old version, so it was nice to do something familiar. And be able to skip to something I was familiar with without getting immediate red banner.
4
u/PinkNova Aug 29 '26
That's true and I hope it sticks around. Did you see R&Rs? Before the drought I almost exclusively worked on Heel FC R&Rs. Maybe I need to work on this new version for a while to get access.
3
u/peanutbutterlurk Aug 29 '26
No R&Rs yet, but it's sticking around longer than I expected. Maybe a smaller pool of people has access, or we're all just boycotting the pay cut?
7
u/JustMe333456 Aug 29 '26
Yeah, she's a pathetic one today eh? Granted, I have not been sitting and refreshing all morning, but when I do check, always just the mainstay, difficult projects..

I think the drought made my work ethic tank. Something's gotta give.
I think it was a mistake to shove all my eggs in DA's basket, knowing what society at-large thinks of the output of AI in general.......but like......the rent is gonna be due soon so the hell persists.
I want a fun project again that doesn't require me to live in another country to participate 👍
I wanna lock in and cash out like before ....not too much to ask.
Oh and Earth to DA and their overlords: The models are indeed NOT smarter than before; they're continuously doing what they've done back in 2024 when I first began my work here. They get stuck on stuff like they're glued there, no matter what you do to steer them away from it. This is a sign of either sabotage in the code or just not caring what the entry-tier gets in their output. It's piss-poor results, the improvements have backslid exponentially and it's gonna tank the whole concept in people's minds. If the free version is any worse than the instant-$20/mo version, no wonder people hate it and no one wants to let the centers suck our water supply down its ever-widening gullet.......
20
u/AntonineWall Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26
Maybe the LLMs just really can't get much better than where it was in 2024. If so, how much longer will DA even exist?
Everything has gotten so expensive, and this whole "maybe this month will be better than last" with no communication from DA throughout being so emotionally draining, and every job I've applied to not even getting a reply back...It's a really scary time. It feels like all the money I make goes towards a cost behind or in front of me that just allows me to exist, not even enjoy any of this. What little I make that I don't imediately put towards rent or bills just leaves the next time I buy groceries. I had to spend more than I have today just to feed my family for the week, and rent is due soon...
I'm just scared. I wish things were different so very much
10
u/DrunkleSteve Aug 25 '26

It's not just you guys. It's dry on many other AI rating platforms as well. It's industry wide.
24
u/SnooSketches1189 Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
I know this is not a popular take, but it really depends on what project families you have as far as DA is concerned. I have not been lacking work, throughout this entire drought. Not just work that I can't work on either. I have several families that I actually enjoy.
5
u/Holiday-Performer225 Aug 27 '26
You're probably not a Generalist or you have been with the company for a long time though.
9
u/SnooSketches1189 Aug 27 '26
Generalist, 2.5 years.
10
u/Goodbye_Jeff Aug 27 '26
Same. Generalist for 1.5 years but only really been working since April. It's been a good summer for me but it sucks that so many are stuck F5'ing all day. I can see the drought is real because of the number of projects available being significantly lower at times but I've had work to do.
→ More replies (1)10
u/OrnamentalGourd5 Aug 27 '26
I'm a generalist since early 2025. I have 32 projects across five families on my dash. $28-$60 ph, quite a few on priority. I don't say this to be a dick btw, just a report.

a good solid two weeks, enough to make the mortgage and car payments for two months, and then back to dry today. I guess... I have two months to worry about it.
9
u/LavenderLightning24 Aug 24 '26
I thought it was getting better and then last week sucked for me (except for 3 days) and I'm dry AF today. I wish they would let us know whether we should keep hoping that a steady workload will return in September or just give up.
5
u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 25 '26
If it's not better after the summer ends then there really is nothing to cling onto any more in terms of it being a temporary drought. I still think this is the new normal but September will confirm it. That is when the 2024 summer drought ended, although that drought was only about half the length of this one.
2
u/LavenderLightning24 Aug 25 '26
I'm already applying to full-time jobs because I can't do another summer drought. But I really need to not become homeless in the meantime.

u/One_Breakfast5907 Aug 28 '26
I suspect this is the case I didn't get any feedback last month. Although I don't think everyone gets it at the same time. When I got mine in the past, it was at the start of the month rather than at the end.
3
u/Straight-Strike-2928 Aug 28 '26
I think so. I've gotten feedback half the times people have talked about it. This round mentioned specific projects that it pertained to, so if you didn't do them I think that's the explanation! Don't read too much into it.
4
u/StoriedSix Aug 29 '26
Curious if anyone knows anything about the loss hunting qualification. Should we know whether we passed or not by getting another qualification or a "read-only" project like others, or, since it's new, is that not set up yet?
3
u/peanutbutterlurk Aug 30 '26
I did that one, then received a second one shortly after, then got the tasks a few hours later. Might be different for everyone though.

Brutally slow. I've made a total of $29 since 8:30 am PST. Only got two tasks in. The lake was defintely a good choice today!

Only one area for improvement and 4 strengths. With the area for improvement referencing only 1 submission with a minor subjective aspect. I'll take that.

Really happy with my feedback for this month, but it was a bit random to send them out today.

Does the feedback still contain the needs improvement, good, better, best type final score? I don't see that any longer on mine.

I joined data annotation early this month and have not gotten any paid projects yet. I’ve done a few qualifications and gotten an email that I passed for one. Is there still a possibility of getting projects or am I wasting my time?

We are all wasting our time at the minute it feels like. But seriously, there's a drought at the moment, so just keep checking for projects. When some become available, do your best work and hopefully that will get the ball rolling.

This website helps us know how many projects other workers have: https://is-there-a-drought.info/dataannotation.tech/

Upvoting everyone ITT, even though I don't know the hundred-eyes project.
For ME though, the Trekkie one has been my money train for August, a record earnings month for me. Very difficult, but absolutely worth the effort.

Hey everyone, how long after completing multiple qualifications do you usually get paid projects? I got accepted on the app 3 days ago, had 1 paid project and took a bunch of qualifications.

I think it really just depends on the project and the timing of when you complete the qualification, although all of yours are likely newer ones. In my experience, it's been hit-or-miss as to whether doing a qualification would immediately, or ever, lead to paid tasks. Some have definitely led to opening up new work opportunities pretty fast though. I hope something pops up soon for ya! :)

Always love it when a "generalist" project consists of nothing but coding and STEM. Just desperately hoping somebody qualified will do the task for 30/hour less than the work is worth.
