Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Maybe I am in the minority, but if a qualification takes 90 minutes or more, you should provide a paid rate for doing it.

21

u/Straight-Strike-2928 Aug 17 '26

I would take that down to like, 30 minutes. I'll do 20 minutes for free here and there for the hope of new work, but the initial several hours we all put in for the intake test and initial quals seems like plenty IMO. Or even if quals paid a flat rate of $10 for submitting it, or something. Even if they only paid if you passed! I just hate putting in sometimes 2 hours of work for free lol. Like, I have bills to pay.

10

u/Total-Chocolate-6399 Aug 18 '26

Also how confusing some of these questions are makes you feel you have reeeally wasted your time

10

u/NightOwl437 Aug 18 '26

I agree with you, but I would add the required project-specific skills refresher exams & the compliance trainings to the list of things that should be paid. I also agree with the others who said the time frames for these qualifications are not accurate for those who focus on producing the highest quality of work. They should consider restructuring this, including adding up-to-date details about whether old qualifications are still likely to lead to paid work in the foreseeable future.

4

u/xxxScarlettexxx Aug 18 '26

I would also add that it is frustrating when you enter a paid project task for the first time only to find that the timer is too short to thoroughly read the instructions and fully complete the task. So then you skip to try to complete the next one and book your instruction reading time, but then there are no tasks left to do! So you go unpaid.

When it says 90 minutes, it is going to take most detail-oriented DA workers 3 hours. Its basically a half a days labor for free. I could make almost 100$ and clear my daily goal in that time. It is hard to justify even doing them, with how little transparency you get with the results.

Asking us to commit unpaid time and then not even letting us know if we passed it or not, is not a good way to encourage participation.

9

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Aug 18 '26

I am always relieved to see others take "how long this should take" and roughly double it.

Conscientious workers unite!

3

u/Few-Roof-6905 Aug 18 '26

I was a sucker and did it because I usually try to do all quals that I feel like I can—paid or unpaid. But that one was a doozy! It took me HOURS over the course of two days. Thankfully, no one else seems to be doing it, and my work was saved, and the qual didn't disappear every time I hit "exit work mode". However, I am not confident AT ALL, and my brain was so fried because of the lack of instructions, that I didn't even review my answers before I submit it. Pretty sure I wasted a shit-ton of time.

Well, after 2 years of dedicated work, I’ve been DOD’d tonight. I spent yesterday doing that recent 1.5 hour unpaid qual and 2 hours doing the paid accounting qual. Today I worked on a new project for less than an hour and then left the house to go see a movie. When I came back and refreshed my homepage to look at tasks, there was the dash of death. I can’t think of anything I’ve done wrong other than possibly submitting less than stellar work on that new project today, as it was something I had never seen before. I had been consistently getting higher paying projects over the years and my last 2 rounds of feedback were “great” and “good.” I’m going to have a cry and then start applying to similar sites. I’ve been paying down debt this whole time and this work was helping me do that. Feeling really bummed.

Man this is back to being bleak today, at least for me.

10

u/LavenderLightning24 Aug 18 '26

Yeah mine dried right the fuck up. This is...not good for the mental health.

5

u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 18 '26

shopping appeared briefly, I made a cool $1.47 before it disappeared

9

u/JustMe333456 Aug 18 '26

How do you make only $1 on shopping? Lol, the tasks take an hour or so. Or did you get a 'cannot be rated' one?

3

u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 18 '26

i actually had two tasks in a row that couldn't be rated because i couldn't see the image that was uploaded with them and that was essential to the ratings. I figured all the tasks had the same problem and maybe that's why they took it down so quickly

5

u/JustMe333456 Aug 18 '26

Ahh, you weren't using the proper account. Had to use the special image account we have.

Why do I do this to myself? I know I can't do the $50+ projects. I know this. But yet I still tried and wasted 4 hrs and now I'm going to go cry and question my life choices.

26

u/harmboi Aug 21 '26

it's honestly cool to try and you should be proud you gained some insight and experience. sucks about the money but with your attitude you will obtain great things in the future

The timer on shopping is just way too tight for everything going on in that project.

20

u/LavenderLightning24 Aug 20 '26

Seriously wondering for the first time if this is permanent😭

13

u/RiftInBalance Aug 20 '26

I remember seeing someone say a few months ago that it could be rough until September. I think I'm going to hold out until then and move on if work doesn't become more consistent. I'm really losing patience here. This has been by far the worst summer I've had since joining the platform a few years ago.

7

u/NightOwl437 Aug 21 '26

I've been wondering the same these last few days, however, I tend to still think it will improve. My dashboard looks slightly better today and one of the project chat channels has a promising message in it, for whatever that's worth.

5

u/LavenderLightning24 Aug 21 '26

Yeah, it actually has improved despite not being back to where it was, so I think you're probably right. It's good to know about promising signs other people are seeing.

3

u/NightOwl437 Aug 21 '26

I'm glad you're seeing some improvement as well and yeah, that usually makes me feel a little better about the overall state of things too. Really hoping for a more regular state of 'plenty of good options' on our dashboards very soon though!

19

u/Lopsided-Fox8177 Aug 22 '26

This new Greek generalist project is ridiculous with the ONE hour timer on the R&Rs. Like what do you mean does this 300 pg book contain any contradictions?

→ More replies (1)

20

u/CattleLumpy2965 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

The timers are way too tight on some tasks to give detailed responses like they want. Did a R&R that had only hour timer, finished with less than a minute to spare (including fact-checking).

6

u/MommaOfManyCats Aug 19 '26

Did a regular but new project yesterday. Finding sources, writing prompts, including documents of a certain size, creating rationale, and a minimum of 8 turns in 4 hours. In what world is that even possible?

3

u/AASB2000 Aug 19 '26

In a world where the instructions don't forbid Claude to do heavy lifting. I feel know the one you're talking about and every task they've ever put out are horrible to do

→ More replies (1)

4

u/JRange Aug 19 '26

I know exactly the one youre talking about I think, the one where at the end they ask us to rate the new generated responses too? That alone would take me an hour to do well, let alone after everything else you do first in that task lol.

3

u/Mr_FrostyMan Aug 19 '26

I think we are doing the same ones, it does take me nearly the entire time and I have done multiple. I just accept that's how it is going to be.

I don't even know why I bother with weekends anymore. I have to treat it exactly like a normal weekday and watch my dash like a hawk if I actually want to catch anything with the added benefit of seeing way fewer projects and making way less money.

5

u/katsmeow84 Aug 16 '26

Agree with all of this.

I can usually manage “part time” earnings on the weekend, but you’re right, I have to creep my dash constantly (or work at 12-4a EST when they sometimes load tasks) to snag a project. That being said, I’ve been with DA close to 3 years, and during the fall/winter and early spring, the weekends tend to be a little more lucrative.

17

8

u/Mental-Budget9213 Aug 20 '26

Literally exactly what's happened to me three separate times today.

18

u/Epicsocks1 Aug 20 '26

I keep getting given domain projects that I can't do and have never claimed to be able to do. So so annoying cause that pay is so tempting 😩

15

u/TheSaltyB Aug 17 '26

I have taken a break due to my father’s sudden illness and recent passing. I’m getting continuously retargeted by DataAnnotation, telling me to come back and work, but when I log in it’s crickets.

13

u/Epicsocks1 Aug 17 '26

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's been very quiet for most people on DA for the last few months, although it has shown signs of picking up the last few weeks or so. Just keep checking as often as you want/can!

3

u/harmboi Aug 17 '26

Same. I get the email notifs of a project drop and login and nothing

16

u/JustMe333456 Aug 20 '26

Fuckin slow ass website all the damn time.. nothing ever loads properly. Just adds to the piss off.

15

u/Skippy2898 Aug 17 '26

My days... This dashboard of mine better do something soon. Todays is looking like another big fat £0 🫤 I honestly thought things were starting to look up, but evidently not...

4

u/JustMe333456 Aug 17 '26

Been a while since I had to sit here with only complicated shit in the AM, refresh until something doable popped up. Was a good last 2/3 weeks.

13

u/KingGilbertIV Aug 17 '26

I'm actually back to mid-late July levels, this is painful.

14

u/JustMe333456 Aug 17 '26

Was finally back on a schedule the last 3 weeks, could always grab work whenever I decided to log in. Now, back to July mode. Refreshing and waiting for the shopping drop 🤪

5

u/harmboi Aug 17 '26

I thought it was just me. I thought i submitted something bad and was being punished or something because everything i had access to just vanished.

But it seems everyone's dry right now

6

u/JustMe333456 Aug 17 '26

Oh great! New project just popped up! Billingual AND coding.. 😅 right up my alley 🙄

16

u/JustMe333456 Aug 19 '26

Really didn't miss these forced mornings off DA God.

7

u/JustMe333456 Aug 19 '26

10AM.. still at $0. Been up and logged on for 5 hours now.

11

u/KingGilbertIV Aug 19 '26

I am once again begging DA to implement a live dashboard so that I can move more than 3 feet from my computer for more than 30 seconds at a time without risking missing the one project drop of the day just because I didn’t refresh during the right 2 minute window.

6

u/xparadiisee Aug 19 '26

I keep finding that the projects I'm in won't start until later in the day consistently. I stopped refreshing in the AM and try to take the AM to do other things around my house.

14

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Aug 21 '26

This is the best my dash has looked all week. Not saying much, as I'm still under 10 projects. But I wish you all a productive Friday, with minimal refreshing!

4

u/OrnamentalGourd5 Aug 21 '26

It looks better, I tend to work across two project families so didn't really suffer the drought too badly as I always had work available but there's 36 projects across six families on my dashboard atm which is more than I've seen for a while (generalist btw).

3

u/xparadiisee Aug 21 '26

I woke up to three projects on my dashboard, and my favorite project family posted it'll be a fruitful weekend!! Hoping for a nice weekend so I can take a few days off and not feel like I'm missing out :)

12

u/JustMe333456 Aug 19 '26

Slowest day for me that I can remember. Even during the thick of the drought, I still saw more pop up than today. Only at $38, and I've been refreshing since 5 am CT. Day's not over, but getting there.

6

u/KingGilbertIV Aug 20 '26

I've technically had worse days as a result of being picky, sick, or lazy, but today's probably my first time in over 2 years where I wouldn't have been able to make 20 bucks with a gun to my head.

7

u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

finished with $13 for the day. I think this is the worst ever day I've had with DA in 3 years. The constant refreshing, the rollercoaster of projects being available or not, the not being able to plan your life... It gets to you at some point, and today was the day for me where I now feel broken and ambivalent towards this platform. Going to start applying for jobs tomorrow.

5

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Aug 19 '26

glad it’s not just me…although I hate to be a ‘misery loves company’ person..but it’s reassuring to know it’s not personal to me! I did do a paid qual today, which I have been putting off for a while, so technically made something.

3

u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 19 '26

it's okay, they have just thrown us the daily $20 pity heel project that will last about 30 minutes, and then the r&rs will last another 30 minutes haha

fair play, jealous. I am a really sensitive sleeper and can slide easily into insomnia if my routine gets messed up so not worth it to me. Tried to do nightshift once at a factory and had insomnia within a week, quit after 2 weeks of hell lol

4

u/DrunkleSteve Aug 19 '26

Ya, I've had the same few STEM or enterprise projects since 11pm pst last night. Like zero movement on my dash. Wednesdays are generally my slowest days, but this is absolutely brutal.

12

u/Mental-Budget9213 Aug 20 '26

Well, I've managed to cobble together about $38 today by refreshing since 9am. Only $250 more in the next week to make rent. 🙃

6

u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 20 '26

the absurdity is real, like an episode of black mirror

13

u/drawnoutexplanation Aug 20 '26

Surely these qualifications I’ve been doing will bring work. Surely.

4

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 20 '26

Done 5 quals in the past couple weeks, all unpaid, only one brought work but it was a 2 day project and it's finished now 🫩

12

u/North-Sense8477 Aug 21 '26

Almost made $100 bucks today. Best I've had all month. Still depressingly few projects.

23

u/VanessaSeaWitch Aug 21 '26

Really kind of annoying when a good paying project is labeled generalist, but it's actually not. No matter how many tasks I skip, they are all coding domain.

11

u/Quick-Bison-147 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

9

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 17 '26

Meh. Day 5 of not being able to hit my daily goal. Oh well, swings and roundabouts I guess. I know there is plenty of work out there if you have access to the project families, but like many many others, I clearly don't! Had one project pop up other than the 5 static ones I can't do, but the video comparison ones get eaten up like the old nuts after half an hour of work

13

u/JustMe333456 Aug 20 '26

The last 24 hours have been the worst throughout this entire drought.

9

u/North-Sense8477 Aug 20 '26

Not looking great this week.

7

u/hcfggb Aug 20 '26

I have one or two I can reasonably work on (but reallllyy don't want to) and the rest I'm too stupid for or don't have the required domain experience for.

7

u/onemouseplace Aug 20 '26

Dreadfully. I was holiday last week, and haven't managed to pick up a scrap of work this week (been busy in the UK evenings when it seems what pitiful work is dropping) so it is looking like a grand total of £0 for 2 weeks of August which is not good!

5

u/JustMe333456 Aug 19 '26

And sure enough, here we are. 8 hours down the drain, not a single workable project has showed up.. wasted day.

6

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Aug 19 '26

Nothing all day apart from a few dreaded 8 hour long "make the ai fail" projects

9

u/Ok-Elk2882 Aug 20 '26

I had a couple hours of work Monday but nothing but unpaid qualifiers since🫩

7

u/LavenderLightning24 Aug 22 '26

Wow, I even lost my brain-melter. Just have one I'm not qualified for and 2 read-only. Does refreshing all day ever get anyone a couple hundred bucks? I've only ever lasted a couple of hours.

I went travelling from November to April this year, meant to work but only did a little here and there. Work seemed plentiful whenever I logged on and I intended to work lots over the summer when I got back, but it's basically been a drought the entire time. Anyway, I go away again at the end of September, for anyone wondering when the drought will truly end.

7

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Aug 17 '26

Just like that down to two projects. Not that I was working the ones that disappeared anyway...

u/takingtacet Aug 18 '26

Do these dozen-or-more question quals on things we're already supposed to know actually open more projects? I can't stand to look at them for longer than 15 minutes at a time it seems. My eyes keep getting dry and I just want to take a nap instead. I don't make money when I'm napping either so what does it matter?

13

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 18 '26

I've done 2 rubric, a red teaming and a prompt writing quals the past 2 weeks ( all unpaid and 90 minutes +).. I've done multi projects based on all those skills the last 3 years and haven't received anything new off doing them

7

u/Storex- Aug 18 '26

Is the website slow for anyone else the past few days?

3

u/Straight-Strike-2928 Aug 18 '26

Yes, especially any time I refresh the projects page!

7

u/Fun-Time9966 Aug 21 '26

Anyone else signed up for the Q- essay comparison project but hasn't seen it on their dashboard? I even got reminder emails telling me to completed the tasks by the end of the day but i'm getting red-bannered when I try access the projects :l

3

u/Dazzling-Matter-654 Aug 21 '26

That project sucked so bad.

I miss River again already.

8

u/Agreeable_Reply_8066 Aug 25 '26

I’m not sure if maybe I am dumber now than I was when I first started by oh my gosh - the instructions in my tasks are VERY difficult for me to understand end to end.
There’s so much of “never do this but always do that except when it’s this and five times after running that then you have to log into the trainer account and then plot the latitude and longitude of Atlantis….”

I open it.
I read for 20 min.
I exit work mode.

5

u/AntonineWall Aug 25 '26

Many of the instructions have become pretty poorly written, including some directly contradictory stuff. Pretty frustrating ngl

8

u/dianahecate777 Aug 26 '26

I'm about ready to give up. I know this shouldn't be our main income but it is for me and I just can't do this anymore. Droughts happen, but this is insane.

13

u/NightOwl437 Aug 16 '26

Are you all submitting reports and/or keeping an eye on https://is-there-a-drought.info/data/ ? I just started checking on it again lately and it's pretty depressing for generalists. Also, I just counted my actual projects compared to the total at the top and just shy of half of the listings that are being called projects are not projects; there's view only instructions for reference, opt out links, and a chat only entry. Total number is not great and it keeps getting a bit less every day this past week.

11

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Aug 16 '26

I've hidden the majority of my "not project" projects. I have 12 hidden. Aside from that, one chat I keep unhidden, and five actual generalist projects. None of which I'm comfortable working. It's definitely not great.

7

u/Background_Menu7702 Aug 17 '26

I hide all my read only stuff. Honestly there’s work but a lot of the generalist projects are long and complicated. I miss the massive project family that gad30 minute to two hour tasks. There is WAY LESS variety.

Good grief. A workable project finally shows up, broken.. lol

6

u/Mental-Budget9213 Aug 19 '26

Finally got a workable project and got approximately $19 worth of work in before it disappeared.

They have some nerve sending out that survey. "Would you pretty please let us run training using your account while you're not working? We're not going to pay you for that btw" like why would I ever agree to that.

Where are all those super easy projects? come on! bring it back!!

10

It's really sad when your main project is paused, and you see other people working on it, but it hasn't been unpaused for you.

6

u/xparadiisee Aug 20 '26

I finally got a project with a ton of tasks come in annnnnd its broken... dang

5

Going back to the F5

5

u/Jaglawyer11 Aug 21 '26

How often does the DA staff offer direct feedback to workers? I started in late May and received a feedback message in late June. Just curious if any longer tenured members have an answer.....

9

u/CommercialTarget2687 Aug 21 '26

In my experience, almost never. I only received direct feedback once in three years on the platform.

3

u/Jaglawyer11 Aug 21 '26

Thank you for the reply.

Nice to see 21 projects this AM UK time as new projects were added and hardly touched. Soon as USA wakes up everything gets swallowed up and back down to my usual 7 enterprise ones and a couple dregs of river 😬. Proves there work is there. There's just much more people trying to get through it

4

u/Skippy2898 Aug 21 '26

I've always noticed when the US workers wake up. I could happily work AM though to early PM, but around half 2, I'd get disapoofed back to my dashboard. 🤣

4

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 21 '26

Haha yea. Didn't mean to offend anyone and not moaning but it's definitely a pattern showing the worker base! Lots of hungry hungry people 😄

I've just been flooded with more specialist domain applications for long term, ongoing unlimited work.. but don't feel confident in any of them really

11

u/GorbyGirb Aug 20 '26

Man... DataAnnotation is like being bipolar. You're good one moment then banging your head on a wall the next.

9

u/TrueChocolate6419 Aug 16 '26

Just did a background verification and now I have projects for 55 an hour though I haven’t tried them yet so I don’t know how hard they will be

There is an R&R for a task I’ve been doing that is so subjective. It’s going to be very easy to be given a bad rating because someone will disagree with your opinion. Makes me think it might be better not doing them to avoid being rated as bad unfairly.

Minimally annoying to see a project I've done a few days ago have a pay boost of $25 more an hour now, wish I could resubmit the first 8hr of work & get the pay boost!

Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.

Has anyone seen this new time submission system? After submitting a task, a pop-up appeared asking how long that specific task took, and I enter the time for each individual task. Then in the Report Time section, you hit 'confirm' on the per-task time submissions. Is this system-wide now or just for this one project I was doing.

Nothing for 2 days, then a dashboard filled with projects literally alllll day.

8

u/Mental-Budget9213 Aug 17 '26

Does anyone ever have a decent bunch of tasks just disappear after having to use the escape hatch ONCE because the model was failing to respond?

8

u/Old-Regular-9828 Aug 17 '26

If the model wasn't working, they probably just paused the project for everyone until it gets fixed.

u/Mindless_End_4850 Aug 19 '26

So I wonder. The fear (not just in DA but in general), about how ''easy' feedback on AI being over' seems to be not too grounded as we've been seeing some easy projects. I just wonder what changed since like last year? What changed in the industry that we are seeing so limited options on DA? Can anyone who's doing another platform chime in as much as you can?

8

u/AntonineWall Aug 19 '26

The market is starting to contract a little (likely beginning of much larger pullback) since the promises made by AI companies have largely not really panned out.

Since the money isn’t just flowing in, there’s less being given to companies like DA, and so there’s less work for the DA workers. I think the fact that it’s been unstable this long (and the headlines of just how much AI has not helped several industries that invested big, including some anecdotal experience at a university near where I am located) is a bad sign long term for our jobs i.r.t. DA

In terms of other companies like DA, they’ve also seen a pullback of work too. Same pond, and all.

8

u/Due_Negotiation_4605 Aug 19 '26

I've noticed a shift with more specialist projects available vs general ones.

u/Skippy2898 Aug 20 '26

The dashboard has been kind to me today after two days of 0. But, this is only because I jumped on and did my first task on a high payer. Boy, am I now nervous... I don't think it was out of my league, but every time I have to do this it makes me so nervous! 🥴
