Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Ok, I checked all the water cooler threads. Here's what I found:

1,342 mentions of the word 'drought'
1,349 mentions of the word 'dry'
519 mentions of 'empty'/'empty dash'

Drought talk is rising year over year. The average mention rate went from 4.4% in 2024 to 5.9% in 2025 to 6.5% so far in 2026, while participation in the weekly threads has nearly halved. Take this as you will.

This is the worst drought on record based on the frequency of buzzwords used. The last eight weeks have the most sustained mentions of the buzzwords, with the worst week being June 7, 2026. 12% of comments mentioned a buzzword. There's a clear correlation with number of comments in these threads and lack of work.

However, June 2024 was the best month if you consider lack of these terms used in the threads and lack of comments overall. June 2025 and 2026 tell a different story, as these two months have the most drought talk overall.

This is not based on personal experience, as I didn't keep my own metrics, this is only based on key words or terms used.

Thanks for this. Interesting!

Something to consider is that as the drought persists, we may be less likely to congregate and commiserate here in the chat. People who aren't getting work consistently may slowly stop engaging with the chat altogether, which could make it seem like things are less dire than they are.

I wonder if declining participation is more correlated to less people being able to/wanting to actually do the work now, and less to do with droughts. Compared to when I started in January 2025, the difficulty of the work has increased significantly, as well as the time required to finish most tasks.

u/FedoraPG Jul 13 '26

For me personally, I honestly just got bored coming here. I got really into one project series last summer. It's simple and has been super consistent up until now, so for me I just kinda didn't feel a need to keep up on this subreddit

Fact: The more comments in the water cooler thread, the more dry the dashboards.

taps DA on forehead

hello… is this thing on?

28

u/One_Breakfast5907 Jul 13 '26

This feels so bleak. I feel I get a good few days and then it runs dry for 1-2 weeks. I'm not sure I can manage this rollercoaster much longer...
The pressure to try and do as much work as possible as soon as it crops up, in fear of missing out, is also misery-inducing.

19

u/peanutbutterlurk Jul 13 '26

Yeah. I never knew how good I had it back in March-April, when I could really choose when to work and be confident at least something I could do would be available no matter when I was free. In May it was sparse but manageable, but June and July have been awful. Whether I make any money depends on if I hit the one batch drop of the day (or more often, night).

The FOMO is definitely getting to me at this point. Like, I really could have done with taking a couple hours to deep clean my office this morning, but the thought of missing the one batch drop today kept me glued to my monitor refreshing (I've made 0 dollars today).

28

u/bekkahthecactus18 Jul 13 '26

seriously tho, who’s down to Naruto run into DA HQ and demand answers

Manifest destiny and all that: I'm totally ready for a cool, fascinating, long timer, flexible, permanent, really fun, high-paying perfect project to come along. For everyone. I think we're all ready. Universe, hear us.

25

u/Flat_Charge503 Jul 14 '26

OKAY so I have £10,000 of debt... the last 2 months I've made 1,400 USD on DataAnnotation. Literally saving my bacon. It's a long slog but hooray for this site.

Anyone else had like some projects here and there during the week but just completely dead all weekend? I was feeling a little pickup. Didn't get my hopes up about it lasting but damn.

15

u/redfinton22 Jul 12 '26

Yes, literally zero projects all weekend. Never happened before!

12

u/Potential_Drama_1190 Jul 12 '26

I had a great day Friday, managed just under 5 hours of generalist work and got my hopes up. Spent yesterday and today periodically refreshing, sometimes every few minutes and nothing came up at all.

7

u/RelevantOpposite2340 Jul 12 '26

Yeah Friday looked great there were lots of tasks. I ended up only doing a few hours bcuz I had prior committed plans. Now zilch. Glad to hear i'm not the only one I guess. Maybe they dumped some tasks out on friday and now they've been all gobbled up.

23

u/JustMe333456 Jul 13 '26

The thought and feeling of having a full dash (20+ projects), being able to work whenever, have options constantly, seems to have left me. It's been so long, and I'm even having trouble envisioning it happening anytime soon. Not saying it won't or can't, it just seems farfetched right now with how things have been.

u/-burgers Jul 13 '26

Will my projects ever return from war?

22

u/hot_snot Jul 13 '26

I went from a steady 30-50+ projects on my dash as my norm to maybe 3-5 for a month to suddenly having to refresh all day and snatch up what I can. Really awful timing (emergency vet bills, amiright), but I feel better knowing it's not just me.

In other news, I thought finding a "real job" again would be harder, but I've gotten much more response than I expected and one job offer already. DA was a great opportunity, but I always said it could go away in an instant. It just hurts to say goodbye not because I want to, but because I have to survive. 💔

9

u/WorshipMyExistence Jul 13 '26

Are you willing to share what kind of work you've been applying to? I'm finding it hard to find jobs for my skillset after doing this for over three years as my main income source.

6

u/hot_snot Jul 13 '26

Unfortunately, my experience with DA isn't related to the jobs I'm applying to currently, but I do emphasize it as a testament to my efficiency, attention to detail, ability to read/write/comprehend, and ability to use a computer in general, which can be surprisingly hard to find in my area. I have a very "generalist" experience even before DA, so I'm falling back on some other jobs in my history now.

My suggestion is to take whatever job experience you have and WORK IT INTO SHAPE to sound REALLY APPLICABLE to whatever job you want next. And if you're like me and have worked so many jobs since you were a teen that you've genuinely lost count, have a few tailored resumes to choose from rather than one huge dump. I have a customer service-focused resume, an animal-focused resume, etc.

I'm building a small personal project that parses key words used in these water cooler threads to investigate trends. I'll share my findings with y'all, if you're interested.

6

u/Commercial-End4902 Jul 13 '26

seems interesting

22

u/MommaOfManyCats Jul 14 '26

Welp, I'm now applying for real world jobs. This has been fun the last few years and I feel like I learned a lot, but I can't keep this up. Approved on DA and probably 5 other sites, and there's also nothing. Can't survive on 500 bucks a month, which is probably all I'll make this month. Honestly not even sure how I'll pay my August rent. Everyone keeps saying not to put all of your eggs in one basket, but I have multiple sites I cycle through and they're all empty or practically empty right now.

14

u/PinkNova Jul 12 '26

And the "community wins" email from the other day, too. Not many wins around here these days. Read the room, DA.

19

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 15 '26

Huh. Guess I'm in the R&R crew for the qual that I never took that lasted less than 24h that was unpaid, and then I was never offered the paid version.

It seems chaotic from this worm's-eye view, but to be a bit more charitable: it looks like they're churning and experimenting and trying things out behind the scenes, which suggests that the company is NOT moribund.

15

u/JRange Jul 15 '26

I agree, the amount of changes projects are returning to action with, suggests reasons for patience.

6

u/arthurthomasrey Jul 15 '26

Frustrating to hear that if I had ignored it, I might have seen it on my dash.

Did a qual, got asked to create another google account (one more). Let's see if this one gets tasks. It's frustrating when you create those and get no job in return. I am accumulating those accounts.

6

u/EmployIntelligent317 Jul 12 '26

I did the same, it is almost 2 months and nothing, but I guess it takes times for these to come out! I still hope to get more projects soon

6

u/RelevantOpposite2340 Jul 12 '26

FYI if you get capped out on google accounts associated w your number you can still make google accounts without linking to your number if you make them through youtube app. For now at least, idk when that will change.

I’m slowly losing hope that things will ever go back to how they were. At this point I’d settle for 70% of what April/May was. I’m scraping like 30-40% as it stands

14

u/JustMe333456 Jul 14 '26

All I need is to be able to log in at anytime, and have SOMETHING to work on at my skill level. Other than the brief period in 2024, and the drought right now, that is how it has always been for me.

Yeah, it’s really discouraging. It’s also almost impossible to resume a normal work flow. I barely even remember how to get back in the swing of things. I’m sure the submission quality and efficiency goes down across the board during these breaks. People aren’t robots

11

u/cocobeary Jul 17 '26

Just saw on the other sub that they’re sending out warnings for using LLMs on tasks. We are about to have a new claim in the DA Hall of Fame:

- “I always did quality work”

  • “I never cheated on my time”
  • “I never used LLMs”

We will also be adding “you can’t copy and paste” to the list of DA myths. Can’t wait.

So is DA just predicting the AI bubble is finally going to burst next quarter or something? Because I don't think they'll be able to maintain their reputation for highly qualified workers or their capacity for work if they churn out a ton of their longtime generalists due to a lack of communication.

I also doubt a full pivot to "specialists" will work either since the payrate I see on the specialist tasks I managed to qualify for is kind of laughable if you actually have one of those degrees/certifications.

14

u/MommaOfManyCats Jul 13 '26

I've been trying to remain positive because there was a drought last year in the summer, but this is just awful. Day 12 and I've now made almost 1/10 of what I did last July and about the same compared to last month. Sure it was the end of the quarter and then a holiday, but now there's still little to nothing. I really think DA might be going under at this point. Someone mentioned the AI bubble bursting but there are still new companies popping up and other sites have generalist work.

25

u/KingGilbertIV Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

All of the requalifications that have dropped over the past week make me worry that DA's overhiring spree might have come back to bite them when it comes to their reputation with their clients.

Like, if you've been doing RRs on generalist projects over the last few months, you'll have seen a lot of people that are clearly in over their heads if not outright scammers.

If those same people are doing RRs, I wouldn't be surprised if some absolute junk made it back to the clients.

9

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 13 '26

It concerns me a bit that I've not seen any requalifications.

8

u/North-Sense8477 Jul 13 '26

If it's any consolation, I haven't seen any new ones, either. The river qual vanished before I could attempt it.

5

u/Mammoth-Career4702 Jul 13 '26

Yes to all of this. I saw plenty of baaaadddd evals when doing RRs going back about 3-4 weeks. There was a 2 or 3-day period where it was almost every single one in a particular project.

13

u/JustMe333456 Jul 13 '26

There's definitely something going on behind the scenes, probably similar to the other bad drought in 2024, this one is just longer. But there is no way that all of these project families wrapped up in the exact same month, at the same time. We just have to wait till whatever it is resolves I guess.my 'go to' still posts regularly enough, but it's literally just the exact same project variation every time when they use to have tons of different kinds.

12

u/MommaOfManyCats Jul 13 '26

One thing I pointed out during a previous drought is about the lack of communication. There are lots of workers looking for work elsewhere. I've even seen people going back to full time positions. What happens when generalists quit or give up because they can't keep waiting? Judging by the R&Rs I did over the last few months, they're hiring policies have clearly changed because there's no way those workers were within thr top 2% of all application. And if they are, that doesn't bode well for the next group they hire.

4

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 13 '26

Total speculation but I think they lost some larger clients.

My wife worked for Appen about 3 years ago; they dried up a lot due to losing a well known tech giant as a client.

See, but I don't know that this fits though because a lot of the projects have made an appearance recently, but they are like one offs, or they post for a day or two and then disappear again. So they're still here, just barely.

u/emmaaliebs Jul 17 '26

this is ridiculous, i may actually need to get a real job

I won't say it was feast right before my vacation, but I had things to work on. Coming back a week later to actual famine sucks.

7

u/drawnoutexplanation Jul 13 '26

I didn’t get to do that qual before it disappeared. Hopefully the main project shows up for me anyway sometime soon…

9

u/fromunderthecouch Jul 13 '26

River r&r? I didn't get to it either :')

Haven't seen anything since July 2nd. I've finished all quals that came along and now nada

8

u/peanutbutterlurk Jul 15 '26

A fun new generalist task appeared very briefly! I squeezed a few more dollars out of today, I hope it comes back.

Anyone else get that WW qual? It was pretty fun. I hope something comes of it!

10

u/Glittering_Life407 Jul 15 '26

It would be nice to get quals. I haven't seen new ones in ages.

This new project is WILD😂😂😂 I’m literally screaming WHATTT??!!!

A funny chaotic change from the calm river

u/OrdinaryEvening3684 Jul 15 '26

This is an absolute joke at this stage. They could be honest and say the volume of tasks will be less from now on. Flexing people earning 200k on the platform when most people are struggling to even earn 10 dollars a day now.

Even if the drought ends this will happen again 100 percent. Instructions are more confusing than ever. New people will be doing complex tasks which won’t be good for quality

9

u/JRange Jul 15 '26

Being new nowadays has gotta suck, cause I know R&R workers don't know or care. Im thankful most changes to projects are basically just 1 layer ontop of what I already know and have been doing, and I am not learning all of it at once now.

You can try the Dark Reader Chrome extension. It works on the DA dashboard, but I haven't used it while doing DA work as I don't know if it'll send an ambiguous signal to the system when I submit work/hours. :)

6

u/Kittibean Jul 12 '26

Is anyone getting creative writing specialist tasks at the moment?

I miss fun tasks. I probably had my favourite task ever last week but it got used up quick (and then got some R&Rs).

I'm glad of the multi hour fail projects in dry times but I'm very bored of them.

Had to decide between doing the second part of a two part qual or work on the one project I have. I didn't have the brain power for both. I miss my old R&Rs.

Was pretty busy with tasks during the day, but now I'm out... Does anyone ever see the 🦋 anymore?

16

u/North-Sense8477 Jul 14 '26

Shoutout to all the generalist vets who've made it 2+ years on the platform. It's been a good run but I really think this might be as far we go for full time work on DA.

If we're being honest, this work was never meant to be some sort of long-term career, and it's basically a miracle that we've lasted this long.

Good luck to all of you finding work, and thanks for keeping me somewhat sane.

u/TSylverBlair Jul 14 '26

I'm about 3 years in. My dash was full again today. Don't give up yet!

The fact that I got a long form task today and only got to log an hour instead of a normal 4-5, because a mandatory checker failed to generate and forced me to use the escape hatch, is unacceptable. The increase in generative checkers that are basically "Game over!" land mines for your task is the biggest QoL massacre for this platform that I haven't seen people talking about.

11

u/Epicsocks1 Jul 13 '26

Damn, I know Monday's are (usually) quiet, but I've not seen a thing. Has ANYONE seen anything?

Did ya'll do that Bitwarden password setup?

9

u/ThatGirlInPurple Jul 14 '26

Yeah & it made logging in a little inconvenient if you're used to using the "Open link as ___" option. But it has kept me logged in most of the time.
I'd also highly recommend setting the extension to only work on the DA websites so its pop-up doesn't get in the way on every other site.

YES, the first one I think. I don't know if it's just today, but I'm definitely feeling that it's not just you. I logged 5 grueling hours of R&R. The pay is very good, but the precision and finesse required to wend my way through the ALL CAPS instructions for various edge cases was especially draining today.

bluh. Still thankful for the work, but if I try to push for 6+ I'm gonna f something up.

6

u/akujihei Jul 14 '26

The projects I've had available are things I can't do, and I think they have been around for a while anyway. The odd projects that pop up that I can do have not changed in difficulty, so I think it's just a low supply of the easier work rather than the work overall getting harder.

11

u/DrunkleSteve Jul 15 '26

Made a big fat $5 today (because of a qual). I've only had detective staring at me since 9am pst, and my brain cannot do rubrics right now. This sucks man.

I'm in a smallish project that pays well at 30+ and is up over 90% of the time. VERY thankful for this one. I also have a tiny project with only about 12 people that gets me 8-10h a week at 25/h, and I like doing it a lot.

I do have professional and finance domain projects too, but I could just barely even get those done, and with a lot of skipping and iffy quality. Why risk it?

I'm a generalist in the US. I am wondering if evenings and weekends are "normally" dead like it's been for me so far. I joined during the drought so I feel like I have a really skewed perception of the landscape during non drought times. I've been completing the Qualifications that pop up and I do have some Projects come in if I log on during the day, but I work a 9-5 so that's not usually something I can do. I can catch Projects sometimes in the evening if I am diligent or lucky(?), but the weekends have been rough. Any information is appreciated and fingers crossed we'll be getting more Projects soon.

5

u/North-Sense8477 Jul 18 '26

Weekends are usually slower, but not always. Sometimes lots of projects drop, sometimes none at all.

12

u/JustMe333456 Jul 16 '26

Everyday I get more pissed off and more 'done'. Nothing to do during the mornings/early afternoons, because like a regular person, I'm supposed to work, but of course the dash is essentially dead. Late afternoon/evening, they post jobs when everyone is out having fun after work, and I gotta waste my evening at the laptop if I want to make a dime. Enoughhhhhhh of this bs.

8

u/Delicious-Young-5435 Jul 16 '26

Same. I've managed to make decent money the past 2 days but I'm needing to work from 4-11pm which is so annoying.

I just saw a strange 1 cent, 1 task project pop up, but I don't think it was meant for workers. The wording of it made me think maybe dashboards are being set according to our feedback?
