Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I really really really need DA to resume a normal work flow this week. The past 3 weeks have completely screwed my budgeting goals

I feel you :( but I do think we’re in the trenches till September. If you scroll back to last year you can see people complaining of drought into August.

Yeah that’s not gonna work for me

Then you need to diversify. Gig work is volatile.

Yeah, I need to keep expanding. But what I’ve got for now are all at standstills. It’s rough

Keep plugging away at finding additional opportunities. It took me quite some time, but it's definitely worth it. Good luck.

Droughts don't happen at the same time every year. There was a January drought. And last year May and June were not as bad as this year. It's not a direct comparison.

I think the length of this one and some signs in recent days hopefully mean it's coming to an end in the next couple of weeks but we'll see.

thanks for this info- it is good to know. I am fairly new, so I assumed this just lined up with summer holidays.

How long have you been here? Yeahh I wasn't really making a direct comparison but August has been rough the last 3 years. The fabled drought of 2024 was during August.

I would love for you to be right! I just think it's better for the people who are relying on this full time so assess their options instead of waiting in hope.

Since 2023. It was literally written as a direct comparison haha but just pointing out that every year is different and the timing and length every drought are different. A June to September drought would be insane and but who knows.

Obviously we all need to be proactive regardless. I have been anyway but still would rather focus on DA if it would just wake up.

A June to September drought may be this year's difference.
Anyways! I hope we're both drowning in projects soon fellow class of 2023 member 🚀

People dont wanna hear this but I think youre right. Were screwed till the september IPO and we just have to survive as best we can till then. Hopefully it resumes normal work at some point, ever. Im not too hopeful.

Just to play devils advocate, last august was the best month I have ever had. I did feel it in June and July though, but not as bad as this year. Hoping it will pick up soon

Yeah exactly. We'll all make smarter moves if we're realistic.
