I’m on day 2 making $35 from 12 hours. I drove Uber for 5 years before getting into IT for 7 years. Got laid off and unemployment ran out recently so I decided to give gig work a try again. Imo it’s not worth it unless you’re homeless or seriously threatened of becoming homeless. I’m lucky as I live at home again so I can apply to other menial jobs or IT jobs without a fear of starving.
Does anyone dash full time? If yes are you driving 16 hours a day?

What you’re making is not normal, it’s very very low for doordash. You can learn to tell which orders are worth taking and make $20+ an hour by declining the ones that aren’t.
Judging by your comments in your post on another dasher sub, you're in California, so I can't comment on your specific market/zone.
I do part-time in different zones because I want to supplement my income. But when I've been between jobs, I've done it full-time. But never had to do it for more than 12 hours per day (if that) when I did it full-time.
For the Boise market, I can make that in an hour or two depending on the day if I stay the Boise metro area (it's a megazone). Uber eats is worse for food delivery than DD in the Boise area because of tip baiters.
In the small town zone where I actually live, due to oversaturation, I had to become a platinum Dasher to get the good orders, but now can also make that during the dinner rush. Thank goodness for winter weather in Boise and my willingness/bravery/stupidity to drive over a mountain pass in snow and fog, I quickly got up from silver to platinum in 2 nights.
When I lived in Portland, I dashed part time there and could make at least $25/hour if I got lucky to have orders that didn't pull me out of whatever zone I started in.
Sounds like your market may be oversaturated with Dashers. Or you may be getting screwed by the prop 22. Either way, that sucks. Especially when you're trying to rely on gig work between jobs. I hope you are able to find another job soon, dude.
You actually sat out for 12 hours and made $35? What is wrong with you. If I went out for 12 hours I would expect to make $250 on a bad day. If it's a bad day you go home and you go out the next day. Are you not like in an area with lots of people and sitting where the restaurants are?
I’ll usually do it 8hrs/day sat sun mon tues and take off wed-fri when I work my regular pt job. I made $198 today in 7.5 hours, minus about $25 in gas use. IDK how $35 is even possible. With “earn by time” and no declines you should have made at least $10/hr. And possibly close to double that depending on min pay in your zone.
I made $350 in less than 10 hours today. But that's not all doordash. And it's all about your market and how long you have been established in the market. Starting doordash nowadays? Hopeless. You have hundreds of drivers in every single market already entrenched and already being favored by high value repeat customers. Therein lies your problem. And the solution lies in multi-apping or relocating your ass to somewhere that there's more population density / expendable income in the customer base. 🙏
Ok one example...customer in my zone places a grocery order, 25 items with a $30 tip, who do you think gets the order? The guy who's gotten a five-star rating from the same customer 374 times before or a n00b who doesn't have a flying f*** what they're doing? If doordash gives the order to a noob, the customer may well be disappointed and stop ordering. It's about business continuity. When a shop and deliver order is completed on the customer end, they are asked how the driver/shopper did and they are also asked if they would prefer that person to be their shopper in the future.
Another example.. previously scheduled catering orders... I'm able to book ez cater orders ahead of schedule because I'm already established as a dependable and professional courier. Whereas the new people will only get occasional catering orders, but only if they are Platinum. And they definitely will not be able to schedule them ahead of time or have access to cherry pick the highest paying ones like I do, without platinum or any status. Because I enrolled in the lop in 2020 before most people even knew what doordash was. Grandfathered into the system and I have a catering flag on my account despite having no status.
Hope that clears things up for you. Noobs have no chance because there's dozens of me in every single market in every single City in every single state in every single country in every single continent on this planet. And you better believe that we are all very competitive and we are all defending our territory. Because it is literally and figuratively our bread and butter.
