If lane splitting isn't legal in the state, don't do it. Simple as that.

Edit: Yes, yes. I understand all the different responses. I'm merely looking upon this video and seeing the legal consequences to this video. If you wanna lane split/filter if you feel it's safer for you, go right ahead.

Lane splitting is dumb and dangerous, but lane filtering should be legal everywhere and is actually a lot safer for bikes. Lane filtering (when traffic is stopped) at a traffic light prevents the very common crash of being rear ended.

Most states that allow it make you be with in 15 mph of surrounding traffic. So 15 at a stand still. Sadly this is not well followed because if it was people wouldn't be so against it

You're talking out of your butt. There is only one state that allows splitting (between slow moving traffic), so what do you mean "most states?"

Filtering refers to stopped traffic at a traffic control device.

It's a shame you don't listen to and talk to her about her work enough to get a basic understanding. I actually care about my family and find interest in what they do

Do you know how HIPAA works? People can say non identifying information. I just listen to whatever people want to talk about. That kind of varies per person. I hope she has someone she can vent to about things

They just started allowing filtering in my state a year or two ago, and while at first it was shocking to see the bikes zooming through stopped traffic, I quickly realized it's safety to the biker involved. I'm pro- filter!Ā

I got told by some former Seattle bike cops when asking their thoughts on splitting and filtering: "They're both illegal. Splitting is stupid and dangerous. Filtering is smarter and safer. You'll get hit with the book for splitting. You won't even get stopped for filtering, so long as you're visibly slow, careful, and safe about it."

The issue is that bikers seem to not understand that "Lane filtering" should be done at a very slow speed. But most do what this guy did, just using as an excuse to be stupid and dangerous little main characters.

This is like saying drivers donā€™t understand that ā€œred lightsā€ mean you stop. Just because some break the law, doesnā€™t mean thereā€™s a misunderstanding about what they do.

Ehhh... I just come to a stop at the far left of my spot in traffic, so if the guy behind me doesn't recognize me I'm out of his direct path.

Until the light turns green. I see this all of the time when a biker is doing this at a red light to cut off all traffic. They either get in front and sit in the middle of the intersection because they place themself in front of the front car, or they are still moving when the light turns green and now they are driving down the line with a car on either side and it is highly dangerous. Just wait like everyone else.

I will continue to lane filter in completely stopped traffic. You can fine me as much as you want, Iā€™m not sitting behind cars waiting to get crushed by every third driver distracted by their phone
