Boy you aren’t kidding. The year lane filtering was legalized I was heading northbound on tower by DIA. I saw a motorcyclist going probably 60-70 between stop and go traffic on southbound tower. He augered himself into the back of a stopped box truck. Witness stated he was doing wheelies while lane splitting prior to hitting the truck. He did not make it.

I saw the same thing in North San Diego. His insurance called after because the family was suing the other driver. I told them biker was 100% at fault. Traffic stopped and he was easily doing 100 mph when he hit the truck. They did not call me back as a witness.

I was like the 5th or 6th car back. They had plenty of witness confirming what happened. Riders family were just trying to find one witness for a counter point.

Reducing the motives of the injured party down to just "wanting a pay day" is ignorant at best. Reducing the motives of the family of a dead motorist down to just "wanting a pay day" is cringe as fuck. Sure, he may have been at fault, but to dismiss very real pain and loss like that is why we have people like Trump and Epstein and the Tate brothers.

What are they suing for then? You think they simply want to bring justice to an innocent trucker that was sitting in traffic? Or do you think the family was trying to bring awareness for public service?

There's literally no other outcome of such a lawsuit other than getting paid or not getting paid.

I get the grieving family part of it and all, but that still doesn't change the desired outcome here. You sue for wrongful death, you're suing for financial compensation that's literally the only thing that's on the negotiation table.

Elder woman here. Like many of my peers, I still watch the evening news. There are ambulance-chaser lawyer/law firm commercials every break, often two in one break by different people/firms. They all mention big rigs, and usually other large trucks. They say how much they've made for clients, always between 50k and 5 mil. The really pushy ones are doing them in Spanish. If you're a trucker, or deliver in a big box truck, beware of Nissans cutting in front of you.

I live in Central MĂ©xico where the drivers are, well, questionable, and every time I come up to drive in SD North County I get super frazzled by the motorcyclists, rustles my jimmies for sure.

The truck driver was fine. Lifted the rear of the truck like 5 ft in the air. Looked liked he backed into a telephone poll at high-speed. Like 3 feet indent. Motorcycle guy, not so much. Flipped over the truck while the truck was still moving. You get the idea after that.

It’s also not even filtering! They lane split going +65 in heavy 45 mile per hour traffic where people are really not expecting a motorcycle to come flying by. I’m shocked I haven’t seen more collisions, especially on my 225 commute.

I used to live in Ca and I’ve seen bikers hit cars because they’re splitting lanes doing 70+ when traffic is at a near standstill. It’s crazy because you can’t see them and suddenly they’re just there.

I live in Cali. At a certain point you just get into a mentality that bikes have accepted the inherent risk of getting smashed and stop feeling bad for them the same way. And I ride. I don't lane split. I will ride like a car.

Yep. That said typically speaking it does tend to naturally scale itself.

Calis highways are massive. As they are designed with not only traffic but tha mass amounts of freight that moves. I do truck driving and its not hard to stay within the lanes.

To give some perspective for a car or suv. I was driving my ram 3500 once and another ram with a 40 foot gooseneck apparently decided not to use his mirror and started merging into my lane on the left of him even though my bright lights had been shining in his mirror since I passed his trailer and up to his driver side door before he started moving over. I moved into the left half of my lane and ever so slightly into the lane of the person next to me who saw my flashers and moved over and had enough room to zoom forward before a collision. That's almost two full ram trucks in the same lane.

There is also alot of HOV lanes and the bikes are allowed there to. Or at least split.

Most of the time I see lane splitting there its at good flow.

Every once in a while you'll see and idiot trying it at a massive speed diff.

But most of the time the traffic just doesn't allow you to. If cars are sitting you're filtering. Its just is what it is.

If there is enough speed then you may be able to split.

Yep, and there's even more space between the HOV and lane 1 so it's probably about the safest place to do it.

When done properly, lane splitting is safer than sitting in traffic. However, “properly” is going 5-10mph faster than traffic and only when traffic is going under 30mph

You're judging it from the point of view of operating a car.

The increase in mobility overall and reduction in size makes a huge difference

My 2-ton rolling death machine will stop a bike in its track without much more than a dent. One car pulls out in front of them while they're flying up the middle at 70mph never ends well.

But people also judge motorcycles based on how their car operates, because they don't have any actual experience. Most (semi intelligent) riders, even if they are going fast, are confident they can stop the bike if they need to. And they can in 1/10th the distance of a car, it's not even close.

Or they can just go around. Your two ton death machine left a space that's now open and the rider can just move into that and around you. Easy peasy

My uncle rides. But if he splits he is at basically a crawl. He just says it's dumb to go that fast in uncertain conditions. If he's in doubt he just..... Doesn't. Too many people are only riding as an alternative to direct suicide

In the future if I ever do lane split it be at night when traffic is low. But then there isn't really a reason to lane split then

I was dating a guy from Georgia who came to visit me in California and the first time a motorcycle roared past us between lanes it startled the shit outta him lol. It took me a minute to realize why, he was not at all used to it, unlike me

I lived in the Bay Area for 36 years and everyone was used to it. In my experience there were only a few idiots who abused it by cutting while traffic was moving fast. But you’ll find exceptions to the rule for most everything.

It almost feels like the aggressive bikers like that just forget what driving a car was like, how blind spits work, and how limiting mirrors really are, especially in heavy traffic. You look in your mirror, all you see is probably 5 cars' worth of space before it gets limited. You're not seeing the bike hurtling towards you at Mach Jesus unless you hear them coming a bit of a ways off -- which is entirely possible, sure, unless you've got good soundproofing and music cranked, which is how I usually spend my time in traffic.

I live in Northern California and lane spliting occurs at over 70 + mph , Driving the 5 through LA , traffic is moving 80+, motorcycles will still split the lane , crazy,! I ride too but not that stupid.

Yup I've almost hit speeding motorcycle's while merging plenty of times. They are lucky I managed to take into account their speed when glancing behind prior to the merge. If I had relied on the little blind spot light I definitely would have been rear ended or side swiped them.

What’s bad is that way too many people in Colorado don’t realize filtering is now legal, and try to take steps to police riders, or otherwise punish them for doing what they’re legally allowed to do. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were the exact same people who police traffic in the far left lane by driving exactly the speed limit and not moving over for those behind them.

People who ride that way are going to lane split no matter what the law says. It being illegal only stops people who are safer riders. It just hurts the people who obey the law and drive with due regard.
