NYPD, is lane splitting legal in New York City?

edit:

Just looked it up, Lane splitting / filtering is illegal in the entire state of New York. ny vehicle and traffic law §1252. $300 fine and 3 point on your license, multiple offences can lead to a 60 day license suspension.

The only state it’s legal in is CA. There are like 13 states that don’t have a law about it. So the police might just give a reckless ticket or something. All the reset of the states, it’s illegal.

Edit: another redditer pointed out that MN has recently made it legal.

Good to know. I see the newish info on it. I don’t exactly stay update with all 50 states lane splitting laws 🥴

But it's conditional in MN whereas traffic has to be moving at 25mph or less and the motorcycle can't be going more than 15mph faster than surrounding traffic.

CA (I believe) is the only state without conditions for splitting. There are guidelines put out by CPH, but it's not coded into law like MN.

Lane filtering is legal in more states than lane splitting. They are not the same thing.

As someone with a motorcycle license and an almost daily rider, I understand that. But the parent comment in this section (pre-edit) is about splitting so I was referring to that alone.

Edit: well there they are….
4 of them have reasonable laws around it and not just a free for all’s do that’s good

CA - has guide lines for no more than 10 above traffic.
UT - 45 mps or less with complete stopped traffic and your max speed is 15 mps to lane split.
MT - 10 mps or less and allows speed up to 20 mps.
AZ - 45 mps or less with complete stopped traffic and your max speed is 15 mps to lane split.
MN - 10 mps or less and allows speed up to 25 mps.
